Absolutely one of those places that I'd love to visit again. Very welcoming hosts, beautiful site, felt remote, but still close to a town. The house (Cabbage Tree cottage) we stayed in was clean, and had everything you needed. Small homely touches like fresh flowers in the living room when we arrived. Thoughtfully laid out. Great views, plenty of walks in an interesting area.

We recently stayed four nights in the Rimu House at Gentle Annie's Camping Ground. The house is quirky, has a great log fire with plenty of wood provided, well equipped kitchen, great view of the ocean and idyllic setting amongst the bush. Sadly, we felt there were a few essentials that were lacking. There were no instructions about the heat pump (which obviously was broken, or the gas fire???) It needed the heat pump to take the chill off the house first thing in the morning. I also needed to be a better standard of cutlery. It was virtually impossible to cut a steak with the knives. In fact one knife was broken. The barbeque was dirty and we had to clean it ourselves before we could cook on it. A rather large Axe was provided to cut kindling which was totally inappropriate. Kindling should be provided for the first night at least and a sensible size Axe for cutting is needed. As there is no where to buy essentials, basics should be provided such as tea/coffee sachets, and salt and pepper. No lights were functioning outside so we had to use a candle for cooking on the barbeque. A torch should be provided. Little touches would help - such as greeting on arrival or someone checking in to see all is ok.

Having not been for a while it was great to see that it still not over developed. It is true that there are only 2 showers and 4 toilets, and that certainly would put the presure on at peak times, however for much of the year it is adequate and part of the charm. They do have plans to build more. There is a gas cooking top and gas BBQ in the covered open air dining area (a light over the BBQ would be a helpful addition) beside the wood fired pizza oven and large fire pit. The kitchen area has fridges, freezers, jug and a microwave. If you want laid back and authentic classic Kiwi then this is the place for you. I mean where else are you going to find a cafe that has an honesty box for cakes when it isn’t staffed?? The muffins are great and they also stock a reasonable choice of gluten free items, including pizza bases, along with locally made wild game pies. Jesse is helpful and friendly. There is a range of books, clothing etc for sale to remind you of your stay. Weka and Pukeko patrol the grounds and Piwakawaka (fantails) great you when you arrive and walk around.

We had three wonderful days in the Cabbage Tree Cottage at Gentle Annie - house was well-designed and appointed, beds comfy, great views of sea, bush all round, clean. We loved it. A few small minuses - no wifi in the house, on-site cafe was over a km away, no coffee or tea supplied, not met by anyone on checkin

In the middle of nowhere is this pristine campsite/holiday park. Nature at its best, weka running calmly amongst the campers, and plenty of laughter, happy dogs and campers. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Though the amenities are basic they were clean and well maintained.
