Detailed Reviews
We had been out in the mist and wet at the Denniston mines and were in need of a hot drink. We stopped here and had a coffee which was quite welcome. The place is in need of some TLC and there was a very strong smell of cooking oil. We probably wouldn't stop here again.

A beautiful setting, right across from the beach, the Charming Creek Tavern captures so much about what is good about the West Coast - fabulous scenery, clean air, and great hospitality. The dining room offers good traditional fare, but prices are reasonable, and the service is excellent. Love the pub cats!! Will definitely go back.

The building is a 100 year old boarding house and must need a lot of ongoing upkeep. The bedrooms are small but comfortable with op shop furniture. Most areas were pretty clean but could be improved. The bedding and towels were very clean. We were the only guests other than one permanent boarder and that was good because there was only one men's and one ladies' toilets and one shower and one bath. We enjoyed a good fish and chips meal at their cafe and they served a good brand of coffee. If you are walking the Charming Creek walkway and don't mind roughing it this is a good budget choice as long as there aren't more guests.

We must admit we were warned to avoid the Ngakawau Hotel aka Charming Creek Hotel if at all possible as it was ‘pretty average’. That isn’t even close to how bad it was. It’s hard to know where to begin. If we were put off by the sneering locals and the unhelpful bar manager, we were about to be floored by the food that was presented to us. As the only dinner option between Westport and Karamea you’d think you’d be pretty used to people passing through. Apparently not it would appear. We don’t recommend the steak or the nachos unless you like to eat virtually raw meat cooked in a tepid pan or the most average nachos I’ve ever encountered in my lifetime. Both those dishes are not hard to cook. We ate what we could stomach of our meals having no other dinner options that evening and scuttled back to our accommodation for the evening. If that section of the West Coast wants to see more domestic tourism and the financial benefits it brings to the region
, establishments like this really need to lift their game. The surly unwelcoming behaviour from both hotel staff and patrons was unnecessary. Drive past this hotel and do not stop.

I ordered takeaways. Was told they would be ready in 20 minutes. Went there in half an hour and was told they were just about to start cooking it. Very disorganised. Surly staff and a total if 4 bottles of fizzy in the fridge!!?? Even though I live close by I will do a one hour round trip to Westport to get take aways from now on!!!

Recently we had a family event in the area and booked out all the rooms in the Pub for the Weekend. The Pub is quite old and the new owners are slowly revamping it, but it is a country built around the turn of the last century if you are expecting the latest amenities you'll be disappointed but the rooms were cheap and cheerful, a very nice lounge you can use or guests only that looks out to sea. The Pub downstairs from the guest accommodations is a classic west coast country pub which services the local community. between the Cafe/takeaways of Pub menu you can expect some solid Tavern food, its not going to win any Michelin stars but we where more than happy to eats the meals and breakfasts from there every night we stayed. The owners of the Pub where very personable and couldn't do enough to help us. I'm very happy to recommend this place to stay and eat, and our whole family was very happy with the experience.

Stopped at the café (also a pub and accommodation) for breakfast. Open every day from 10am and scrambled eggs, two pieces of buttered toast - and a slice of tomato - for only $7. And my pot of tea for one was super strong, West Coast style! Lovely sitting outside in the sun, listening to a good radio station and reading the local monthly news. Highly recommend 😊

We walked into the bar first by accident. Very dingy and reeks of cigarette smoke. We were guided into the restaurant portion which resembles a high school cafeteria. They charge extra for take-out items if you want to eat them at the restaurant. They also charge for condiments like their ketchup and aioli sauce. I had a steak pie, which was just okay, but they put beets on it, which made it pretty gross. My wife had chicken nuggets and fries, which tasted like they had been frozen for 10 years. The bathrooms were pretty horrid too. Definitely will not come back here.
