Detailed Reviews
The lodge is an upmarket and quirky bed and breakfast. We stayed for three nights while exploring Fiordland. The theme is that it is an old nunnery, founded in 1936 and moved to Te Anua about 20 years ago. The monastic theme is maintained in the decor and naming. As well as the rooms in the nunnery, there are others around – we had the Bishops Retreat, which is a small cabin just beside the main building. The room was compact but perfectly well furnished and included a small kitchenette area with sink, fridge and microwave.
There is a sitting room, called the library, and a sizable garden for guests' use. The breakfasts were good. Because it is a B&B, there is a far more personal feel than you get in w hotel and the proprietor was very friendly and helpful in terms of activities in the area. Service was good.

This has to be the quirkiest place I’ve stayed in, but also the most fun! Te Ana’s Lodge has normal rooms within the lodge, but I’d recommend staying in the converted train carriage instead.
It’s been beautifully fitted out, with lots of in-character features. We enjoyed playing records while we ate our breakfast or bathed in the massive bath. The indoor space is huge and works very well as accommodation.
A continental breakfast is provided in the carriage but we were also able to visit the main lodge for breakfast on some mornings during our stay. Heaters, thick duvets and blankets are provided because, with all the windows, I imagine it gets pretty chilly at times. We only needed a light duvet during our stay but cranked the heater up in the mornings.

The Te Anau Lodge, a relocated, converted nun convent, is a unique place to stay. Our room offered a wonderful view and breakfast was complete - we liked opportunities to meet other guests and learn about their NZ travel and Te Anau plans. The innkeeper was very exuberant, and his ability to speak many languages was impressive. Other staff were equally helpful. Free Laundry facilities are available. The main floor decor retains those of the convent making for a very enjoyable and different stay. Te Anau is a small town that is the gateway to Fjordland NP. We walked to the town center, and the lake, in 15 min.

Our family of three stayed here for two nights over Easter (not long enough)
The lodge is beautiful and has been tastefully restored. Well worth understanding it's interesting history.
We had a warm greeting from our host who was informative and super helpful throughout our stay.
Our room was upstairs and sun streamed in. We had a view over the expansive lawn and beyond that of the stunning scenery.
Our room was clean and warm and OMG the biggest and most comfortable bed I have ever slept in.
In the evenings we enjoyed a complementary drink in the library
From Te Anau Lodge is an easy flat walk into town.
I highly recommend Te Anau Lodge, the service was amazing and it is hands down better than a generic hotel.
I would urge any Kiwi who has not visited this part of the country to come and enjoy the unspoiled beauty especially during COVID with fewer tourists and in the process support the small businesses.

We had a wonderful night at the Te Anau Lodge, although we stayed in the ensuite room, called the Bishop’s Retreat. This was ideal, so not to disturb the other guests in the lodge, as we were leaving early the next morning to do the Milford sound cruise. Our host, Suzy, was amazing! She baked us some delicious muffins for afternoon tea and we enjoyed a glass of wine and a beer on the balcony, before dinner. The lodge is in walking distance to the beautiful lake Te Anau.

We have just completed an amazing three nights at the Te Anau Lodge. What a beautiful, eclectic, and eccentric property!
Central to our positive experience at this rebuilt nunnery was the Lodge Administrator, Ms. Kym Trapski. Her smiling face greeted us one afternoon at check-in and things just got better from there. Kym showed us around the lodge pointing out items of interest (Confessional - luggage elevator) and items of necessity (Library, Breakfast Room). When she showed us to our room, Mother Superior’s, she promised to tiptoe in to the kitchen each morning so as not to disturb us during breakfast preparations. There was such friendliness and pride in her voice, it seemed as if this was her own home.
From Milford Sound cruising, to Rainbow Reach hiking, to dinner ideas, Kym was quick to answer our questions, give advice, and make bookings for us when requested. This truly led to enhancing our three day experience in Te Anau.
We enjoyed the atmosphere of the community breakfast room and meeting new friends in the library at night.
Te Anau Lodge is an incredible property. We would argue that it is the best of accommodations in this tourist town. It is an inviting and comfortable place to spend several nights. Under Kym Trapski’s leadership, it rises to another level.
This is the only accommodation in Te Anau that we would recommend. The rest appear very pedestrian. Book early to get the best choice of rooms as there is a great variety available.

My wife and I spent two nights in this atypical place.
Our room was comfortable and very clean. Actually, each room is different and they have all their own particularities. Coffee, tea, soda, juice and wine are available all the day round as well as home-made cakes. The atmosphere of the place is very pleasant.
Mark (the host) is a bit burlesque (not pejorative, I rassure you) but so kind and helpful ! Very surprisingly, he can speak lot of different languages: English (of course!), French, German, ... In our own language, he gave us lot of information on the history of the place as well as where to eat and things to do in the neighborhood. And there are a lot of things to do: Te Anau lodge is located in the Fjordland region where its possible to discover this amazing area thanks to lot of hikes.

This lodge is a converted convent and is simply charming. The breakfasts were massive and delicious and we had the extra benefit of joining the staff for a special Basque themed dinner one evening. The owner was very helpful and seems genuinely interested in his visitors. We stayed in the railcar which was an experience in itself. We highly recommend this lodge. We wish we could have stayed longer.

I would highly recommend this as a place to stay. We were a family of five and stayed in the Mararoa Homestead which is a 3 bedroom house on the estate. It was super quirky in its decor which added to the unique experience and had absolutely everything we could want. The kitchen was fully stocked and the hospitality was exceptional. Our only regret was not staying longer. Would certainly stay here again.

We stayed 2 nights as part of our Around the Mountain experience. It was lovely. We were well catered for and the hot breakfast with homemade pastries is a treat. the rooms (and the whole house) is wonderfully restored - right down to the Nun's outfit in the Mother Superior Room! Very quiet and peaceful. Thank you Mark!
