Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I don't mind old I do mind dirty and neglected. The curtains are ripped and mouldy, the bathroom dirty, bed needed replacing years ago . It was hard to tell if the sheets were laundered. The garbage was emptied fom our roomand two towels left. No milk left. SawThe garden outlook was nice! Wi fi okay.

Stayed 1 night, after booking through Booking.com. The office was not manned, but key was taped to the door, with clear instructions. We got the impression that proprietors were nervous about Covid, and wanted to eliminate any unnecessary contacts. The room was clean & comfortable. Location was about 15 min walk from the DOC visitor centre, where the Tracknet bus dropped us; and about 10 min walk to town. All perfectly functional.

We arrived to find our key sellotaped to the office door. Turns out the office isn't staffed any more. This wasn't particularly a problem, but it meant that things like borrowing dvds wasn't possible (and TV was poor, so we would have liked to have borrowed one). Also, the motel book in the room said that the room would be serviced every day ( not to make beds, but to empty bins and provide additional tea and coffee supplies). Our room was not serviced during our stay. Room was ok, but very tried looking. The room slept 4 people and had cooking facilities, but we had just 1 bowl, 2 plates and cutlery for 2. None of the crockery or cutlery matched, which just gave the impression of being uncared for and tired. There was a broken chair outside the bedroom door with the previous occupants cigarette butts in. Gardens for all motel rooms are joined, so we returned back from a day out to find that the man next door was using our chairs to dry his washing on! We could see that the motel is up for sale and it felt like the owners had lost interest. Location was very good, just one road back from the lake ( and easy access to the lake via a gennel).

Alpenhorn Motel was the ONLY New Zealand establishment that refunded our money when the New Zealand government asked travelers to leave the country due to Covid 19. They must be really good people and deserve your business!

As stated in previously comments, basically clean, sheets not ironed and towels very ragged, with strings hanging and quite small. Definitely not worth the price nor the rave reviews. You can walk to town but it is a bit of a walk. The glow worms were great, but the whole town is tired.

From the reviews I expected much better. Whilst everything appeared clean, the bed sheets and pillow cases were not ironed. How would one know wether the sheets been washed from the previous occupant? Properly laundered linen would be neat and crisp, this was NOT. Quite shuddering to think they had not been cleaned from the previous occupant. I’m sure this was not the case but it leaves one thinking it could be. The lady we saw in the office was very pleasant and helpful but the overall experience was one of basic facilities with cheap furniture and fittings.

My wife and I were travelling around the South Island and had booked this motel for the 5th and 6th of February, prepaying through hotels.com. Severe weather just prior to our arrival date closed some roads, including the one leading to Te Anu, where this motel is located. Road was closed for a couple of days including the day we were to arrive. In early morning I called the hotel on four occasions, never getting past the voice mail, so I left two detailed messages to have them contact, to hopefully work out what to do with my prepaid reservation. I did not hear from them, so eventually just cancelled the reservation, and booked in another that could be reached. Hotels.com attempted to get my money back, but the motel refused, and that was the end of it. There were many people trapped in Te Anu, who could not get out, so I suspect either the motel double dipped, or I paid for someone else to stay there. Other hotels motels refunded, but not these people.

Stayed a night. Room was clean and tidy, kitchen facilities good and great WiFi. As there are only 3 TV stations available, they offer free dvds to watch. Only problem is that office closes around 4.30 so not able to ask for one. Bed was comfortable and room a decent size

This block of around six motel units is the perfect quiet spot for your independent traveller. You’re basically left to your own devices (key to our unit was left out for us on arrival, and the office seems to be closed or unattended the majority of the time). This didn’t bother us, as we knew there were numbers we could call if we needed anything. The unit was well fitted out with everything you would need and could expect for the price. The location is good being just a block from the lakefront / a short walk away to the town centre (fair selection of cafes and restaurants nearby). A good reliable choice for a short Te Anau get-away.

We only had one night in Te Anau, and as we arrived at 4.30pm and left again at 6.30 the following morning, we never even saw a member of staff! But they left our keys for us and getting in was easy. If you are checking-out before 8.30, just leave your key in the key hole on the door. It was a cold night, and our heaters in rooms 1 & 3 worked great and kept us toasty all night. The room is very simple and a little dated, but very clean and for the price, we couldn't grumble. The TV was pretty useless but we weren't really watching anyway. There's decent Wi-fi and a parking space for every room. The location is great, within 10 minutes of all the restaurants. If you are leaving early in the morning, the petrol stations offer 24 hour payment via self-service.
