Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Extremely scenic with lots of space. We went in a self contained camper and thought it was fantastic in a good location. People who turn up and complain about the state of the toilets should do some research before their trip. It’s very remote with no phone signal. This campsite is much more like the ones you’d find in remote Canada or the US.

We really enjoyed this campsite among the several that we stopped at looking for the best conditions. This one is about 40min. drive to Milford Sound. Perfect night stop with a short drive to the Sound the following day.

You will see the other campsites every few miles. Some are tiny, cornered in, many had the vampire flies, etc. And those may be your liking. Again this one was the best.

For us, it was wide open, and we found a site right at the creek. We had views of the valley.
We arrived around 4 - 5ish and saw only about 4 other campers. We got our spot and setted up for the night. Walked around looking for wood. Wasn't much and the conditions were moist. But still managed to get a fire which camp host monitor dubbed it the best. Others were creating smoke.
So you might want to bring some if you have room in vehicle.

Around the campsite are footpaths that go into the woods. Nice casual 20 - 40 min lengths depending which turn you make. We walked from our campsite to main entrance and journeyed in, eventually realizing that one footpath hugged near our campsite. So we could have entered from there instead we exited from the woods into our base.

The creek we're camped at filters into a vast lake. Again those foot paths lead to the banks if you walk the right one. We took a nice dip. No one was around. Again only few campers settled at the time. So we took off our clothes and skinny dipped. The water was amazingly not cold but actually soothing and refreshing to the body. And the air at the time was nice, though the skies was overcast.
We eventually walked down the creek to our campsite. That was fun!! Again no one around. Its as if we had the whole place to ourselves despite seeing few other vehicles.

So in summary, the campsite is beautiful with the views, it has a lake and a creek you can swim in or dip your toes in. Some foot paths 4 - 6 min. walk away.

Eventually the rest of the campers arrived when it was close to sunset.

We chose this spot to freedom camp as it was close to the Milford sound cruises. There was a nice walk to do and basic toilets and clean under cover food prep areas and tables. Plenty of space for everyone. Would recommend. The landscape is better suited for motorhomes as there is lots of gravel and uneven ground but there were lots of tenters in the edge of the bush where it was shaded.

The campsite is located in a beautiful setting, around 40 minutes away from Milford Sound. And that's the only advantage of it.
We paid 30 NZD for 2 people and it was not worth it as we got almost nothing for that price! There were only pit "Toilets" on site, very dirty and full of flies without any sink. No showers as well. Cooking shelters had no amenities, there were only tables. The barbecue was outside and we couldn't use it because of the rain.

Not sure what we paid for, as we had much better amenities in free public toilets.

We don't recommend unless you are a self-contained campervan.

Useful location quite near to Milford Sound (max one hour drive) and very pretty with river next to the site, and mountains surrounding.

However DOC need to regulate the numbers on this site much more thoughtfully. We counted at least 70 campervans and cars. People were still arriving after 7pm and the site became very crowded and somewhat squalid. We had read that the maximum number permitted was supposed to be much lower.

Just a few WCs for all these people - not enough. River NOT CLEAN - heavy fungal pollution.

A pity.

A nice, basic campsite that had a lot of space, fewer sand flies than the other sites, and a nice little nature walk to pass the time.

A great place to camp if you're planning to drive to Milford Sound the next day!

We stayed here on our way back from Milford Sound, big site with plenty of room. There of lots of friendly birds, and other wildlife, nice place to stay. This site only offers basic facilities so remember to bring drinking water.

We spent one night here during a week of camping at various spots en route to Milford Sound and this was definitely one of the better campgrounds in the area. That being said, the place becomes an absolute zoo each evening and campers pile in and try to find any scrap of empty ground. Make sure you get there early to find a decent spot to pitch a tent (we actually set up our tent before noon and then went about our planned activities for the day, before returning to our site that evening).

Used this free ($6.00 per night) DOC camping spot in our motorhome as a jump-off to spend the day in Milford Sound. Has drop toilets and some spots have camp fire place availability, my advice if you want a camp fire is to bring your own wood as what is available id scarce and very wet. Also, get there early (by 4pm) to get a good spot and watch out for the sand-flies.

Travelling in freedom certified campervan, campsite was about 1/3 full but got great place right in front of the creek. Plenty of toilets (longdrop ones) but we’re not here for luxury. Quiet environment and amazing morning views. Cost was $26 for 2 adults in the campervan and well worth it. Got a good start for our walks that day. Be warned though: 2 checks from DoC staff for anyone trying to not pay up! An evening round and a morning gate check on the way out. Do the right thing
