Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Thought we had stayed in some amazing hotels then we arrived at Fiordland Lodge - WOW. Views to die for of the lake, quiet and solitude. Fabulous dinner after pre dinner drinks and nibbles in the lounge with the other guests. This is an incredible place that is small enough to give 5* personal service, nothing too much trouble from helping with our luggage to keeping our drinks topped up!

Very cool lodge- beautiful views, nice building and facilities, great staff. The hosts were super nice and accommodating. The food was delicious, the wine list was nice and the rooms had great doors and window looking out at the lake. My only comment is that the shower with the full length mirror was less than appealing. Maybe if you are 25, but when you're in your late 50's, not so much. the glass walls did not meet and water went everywhere. But, that was a minor part of an incredible place to stay.

This would be 10 stars but that is not an option. Start with service. The owners, brothers Andy and James, are visible and always helpful. The staff included Haley who clearly has been here awhile and knows her stuff, but equally impressive are more recent hires from all over the world who all have a positive attitude and have one goal, which is to make the guest happy. As for the food, it was exceptional, from a half dozen or more choices at breakfast to 3 course dinners. And the sorbet is better than any sorbet we have had anywhere. The location is optimal and cuts the time down more than half to go to Milford Sound or any number of the great walks in the area. Much better base than Queenstown. If in the area, run don’t walk to Fiordland Lodge. But book early, it is very popular and only holds 25 or so guests.

Fiordland Lodge was excellent in every respect. Ita location is perfect, with gorgeous views over Lake Te Anau. Service was outstanding, with special shout outs to Rosie and Emma who were unfailingly friendly, gracious and helpful. The meals were amazing, and the chefs went to extra lengths to prepare delicious vegetarian options for me. My friends and I stayed in Cabin #2, which suited us perfectly. Can't say enough about this place. Not inexpensive, but worth every penny. The perfect base for exploring Fiordland National Park.

Part of a two week NZ family vacation to South Island, we adored staying at this welcoming, cozy lodge. Stunning views of the lake and mountains, luxurious rooms tastefully appointed in a California meets Aspen style, welcoming management and staff — all made for an unforgettable stay. Welcomed by Hayley after driving from Queenstown, we had canapés and drinks at 6 in the common room with a large wood-burning fireplace, followed by a carefully curated dinner with farm to table charm. It did not get dark until after 9PM and we enjoyed every minute on the beautiful grounds. Heated towel rack, modern shower, and organic beauty products were much enjoyed after a rainy full-day Milford Sound trip. Many thanks to James for arranging a private tour to Milford Sound and for his management of this beautiful gem of a lodge, Emma for dotting on us at breakfast, Rosie for amazing drinks, Hayley for her care as exquisite dinner host, and to all others who made our Te Anau / Milford Sound trip a “must return”.

Very mixed. We erroneously thought we were closer to Milford Sound, the reason for coming here. Turns out, it was a half hour helicopter ride or a two hour drive. Hire the helicopter; it’s magical, and worth every penny. It lands right at the hotel and takes you to Milford Sound where you can hire a private or public boat. The hotel can arrange either. Pros—Staff was great, food delicious and thoughtfully prepared. Small wine list. Setting beautiful and serene. Hot tubs a plus! Cons—Fiordland seems geared to those who are here to fish or weddings, and large family outings. The day we departed, we felt a little pushed out as the wedding party arrived. Overall—if your goal is to visit Milford Sound and enjoy a day on the water, better to stay in Queenstown and fly over for the day. We didn’t feel we added enough to our trip to add a stay at Fiordland hotel.

The lodge has a great location with an amazing view but is a dated and well questioned management ands there attention to detail. Very friendly staff and good food on the other hand. Sizeable rooms, which needs to be cleaned better - we had a collection of hair in our bathroom and there were eg no chairs etc on the balcony. Don’t be surprised if one of the owners is watching you loading your car without offering help or calling someone. We used it as a starting point to go into Doubtful Sound - breathtaking and please take the morning tour when the water is still flat.

Maybe my favorite hotel I've ever stayed at... the lodge is like a huge warm hug, a comforting place to land amidst a wild and adventurous part of the country. I have to sing the praises of the chefs/dining team - we are a vegan couple and are challenged to find options at times. We let the team know in advance, and instead of being met with subpar options or restaurant recommendations in town, we were blown away. The chefs created two back to back fully vegan three course meals for us, some of the best food we've ever had while traveling. Creative, flavorful and delicious, I can't express my gratitude more. The team helping in the dining room were also so supportive and helpful at breakfast, explaining options to us. As for the rooms - total luxury. Heated bathroom floors, plush carpeting, cozy bed, mini bar with snacks, they have it all. Including maybe the best spot to sit and read a book I've ever found. Practically, this is a great home base for exploring Doubtful and Milford Sounds without the excruciating 5+ hour drive from and to Queenstown. It's 20 minutes to the Manapouri docks for Doubtful cruises, and less than 2 hours to the main Milford Sound dock. This gave us more time to explore and relax. I truly hope to come back one day!

We stayed here for 2 nights. Luxury accommodation with exceptional customer service. We loved the fact that there is limited rooms available, it made us feel like we were the only ones there at times. Great to catch up with fellow adventurers at the end of the day over a quiet beverage before sitting down to a sumptuous meal with a menu that changes daily. Views to die for with ever changing weather. We are planning to stay longer on our next visit!
