Distinction Luxmore is ideally situated in Te Anau for taking the many excursions available in the surrounding areas, e.g. Milford/Doubtful Sound, Glow worm caves etc. This 4 star hotel offers a comfortable stay, adequate facilities including guest laundrette, and buffet style breakfast. Whilst breakfast didn't really offer high quality ingredients, e.g. mass produced hash browns, basic sausages, bacon, cereals etc we were impressed by the fresh fruit and the whole honey comb, which is something we have not seen elsewhere. The honey was delicious! There's no air conditioning in the rooms, but they do provide an oscillating floor fan. Basic toiletries provided, not luxury, but reasonable accommodation for the stop off point in Te Anau.

On arrival, this hotel looked very tired and in need of updating. It was also very cold. The reception area was rather dull in lighting and a bit soulless. However, we were told tgatpur room had been newly refurbished and indeed it was very modern, with brand new carpets, lots ofigghting, a very effective air con system and a lovely bathroom. There was everything that we needed. The hotel is very well located, especially for those doing RealNZ trips. However, it is a very large hotel that clearly caters to multiple coach parties. This meant that we were woken by coaches making an early departure. It also meant that breakfast was only served untill 8.30, as obviously all the coaches have departed by then. We had breakfast towards the end of the serving time, and found the breakfast area (which has apparently been refurbished) surprisingly pleasant, considering the soullessness of the other public areas. The hotel dies not have a restaurant (though there is apparently one in the summer months). There is however a linked bar/diner, Bailleyz, which we used on the first night and found it fine. But we couldn't eat there on our second night as it was full, and the staff did not seem interested in finding us a spot, which was very disappointing.

We stayed here as part of the 3 day hike package from Trips & Tramps - this hotel was great. The staff are very friendly and they have a large laundry area for all guests, which is what you need after hiking all day. The attached restaurant Bailiez has delicious food and provides an amazing buffet breakfast - also included in the hike package. It’s placed at a central location, making it incredibly easy if you don’t have a car. Just a few negatives - the rooms need air con or bigger opening windows, and a option for either shower or bath only (shower over bath is difficult to use when you’ve been hiking all day).

What a terrible old and outdated hotel! I should have known I was in trouble when upon arrival I was issued an old fashioned room key - yes a KEY, not a key card, but an old fashioned actual key (see photo). Worse, the key had no markings such as "Do not duplicate" meaning any prior guest could have made a copy and had access to my room. Completely unsafe in 2024 and a 1974 throwback for sure!
But wait, 1974 isn't done! Along with the throwback room key and gold bed spreads, my "Superior Queen room" did not come with air conditioning! A call to the front desk confirmed I would need to upgrade from the "Superior" room in order to receive a room with A/C. There was a plug in pedestal fan that was included with the room though to cool down - again 1974 tech at its finest! I also do not recall any disclaimers about no air conditioning for the selected room during the booking process - so I was not forewarned.
On the service side, I had pre-paid for my room, but they required a credit card to be swiped at check-in for incidental charges (an expected and normal practice). At check out, I asked for a zero balance folio print-out to confirm I had not made any incidental charges (again, this should have been a standard request that I have always made for pre-paid room bookings at other hotels without issue). The desk clerk said it was not possible to give me a receipt, that I would have to contact the company I made the booking through. I tried to explain that I did not want a receipt for my room charge, just a receipt showing that I had not made any incidental purchases. The clerk did not understand or did not care, and refused to issue me any receipt or documentation to confirm there were no additional incidental charges.
Finally, breakfast was terrible. Most of the food was inedible, except for the hash browns, which were clearly pre-prepared and heated up to serve (which is probably what made them edible).
I will say that our room was clean at least, but the overall experience was still 1 star at best. I decided to stay in Te Anau after making a day trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound. I must say that the drive wasn't bad at all, and it would have been very feasible and I would have been much better off making the final two hour drive back to Queenstown versus staying in Te Anau at the Distinction Luxmore Hotel.

No daily room service for a four star hotel is appalling, the excuse is because of COVID makes you laugh.
Apparently they only enter the rooms for cleaning upon check out so no clean towels or beds made for a 4 star hotel is what one would expect the price you pay for is the service you expect.
Daft rule especially when other hotels offer daily room service, it’s not like I’m in MIQ for crying out loud 🥴

Has the Distinction of being the worst accommodation we have stayed in while in NZ. There was absolutely nothing about the room that I could see that would make it Superior. While we did not expect our sheets or towels to be changed we did expect the beds to be made to the same standard as if they had. Curtains were off tracks, shower curtain kept sticking to you. Reception advised that breakfast was on the ground floor it was on the 2nd etc. I could go on. Poor Poor Poor.

The bathroom fittings and bed setting's are designed for very short people! Aside from this the room was great and reception very friendly . We were upgraded to a lake view which was spectacular . Unfortunlately the mattresses are dipping in the middle somewhat. The room lighting is poor, too dull, but the blockout curtains work well if you want to sleep in. Breakfast is your standard full breakfast .

Our stay here was just about okay. We were denied access into our room until later in the day as it hadn't been cleaned. You really need to install a lift for hotel guests to make access easier for first floor rooms. First impressions count, so it was sad to see the most miserable member of staff on duty when we arrived for breakfast, and barking instructions where we should sit. The layout of breakfast food and drinks needs a rethink. Why put the coffee machine in a tight crowded corner where access is difficult?

Hi LondonFozzy I am truly sorry about your experience however it was not at our hotel. We have three lifts, two of these are visible from the reception desk. Also our coffee machines are central allowing access from both sides. If it is possible to remove your comment this would be greatly appreciated. Best Regards Glne

We booked here for 2 nights, it looked really nice on arrival but when it came to bed time I pulled back the covers and there was blood on the sheets, the bed was not changed from the last guests, we phoned reception and were offered an other room which was up stairs so we declined as I am disabled, the manager came and changed the bed and we eventually got to bed after midnight, on check out I asked if there was any discount due to what happened but I got a stern No. it cost $299 per night. We could have got somewhere cleaner for less.

4 of us ladies had 4 nights at this hotel late March 2022, using it as a base for tramping trips close by. We cannot speak highly enough of it. Such wonderful friendly and helpful staff in the hotel and the in-house (but also public) restaurant, Bailiez. All staff went out of their way to accommodate our needs. It did not bother us that they are not servicing the rooms at present- we would rather the staff are safe. We only had to ask for something and it was organised
The foyer is huge and dark and a little uninviting, but our rooms were light and bright on the top 3rd floor. Everything was impeccably clean. We had all been upgraded to their deluxe/superior rooms, hugely spacious with two queen beds, two comfy arm chairs, wonderful large bathtub that we soaked in each night to relieve our aching bodies. The water pressure was excellent and the hot water arrived instantly. Double glazing shut out any noise, but the rooms were exceptionally quiet as we couldn't hear anything between rooms or out in the corridors. The rooms are well insulated, so do become very hot, but there is a large commercial-type fan provided. If you get cold, there is a wall heater. And for us ladies, there was a full length mirror and great light in the bedroom and bathroom for preening ourselves!
Please stay here when you visit Te Anau, as you couldn't ask for better.
