I had the misfortune to stay a night here & was woken by a stinging bite to my foot. I thought it was a mosquito but when I examined the bottom of the bed I found a bug crawling about the sheets which I squashed. I sent a picture to Public Health NZ & they confirmed it was a bedbug. These things happen when travel!ing but what I found particularly annoying was the response by the owner's daughter who didn't even bother to offer an apo!ogy, begrudgingly let me use the tumble drier to heat up my clothes which I had worn in the room (this is the most effective way to kill bedbugs/destroy their eggs) and insinuated I had brought it in with my belongings! In addition the guy working there said as he'd travelled in France & Portugal and encountered bedbugs so it's to be expected. Perhaps, but I would consider this a poor attitude for someone running holiday accommodation. The owner's daughter also stated that there couldn't be a problem as "the last time bedbugs were found it was in room 11 not room 8" . I think my experience was just another symptom of a backpacker's suffering from long-term neglect. Judging by their chronic sagging, the mattresses must be decades old and harbouring who-know's-what. Also the main house had a bad leak with water dripping from the roof when it rained. The carpets are threadbare and ripped in places. It's so sad as properly run this place could be wonderful.

A strange place which is way out of town (which is fine if that’s what you want), has no atmosphere at all, unfriendly staff, cold communal areas (wood burner was lit but very inefficient at chucking any heat out) and the most bizarre toilet arrangement by the kitchen/lounge area (see photo). When we asked about it, the receptionist said that they’d installed the new toilets but hadn’t quite got around to putting the cubicles around them yet! The kitchen was big and pretty well equipped although many of the gas burners on the impressive looking hob didn’t actually work which would be a problem with larger numbers trying to cook at the same time. You had to specifically ask reception for a wine glass (no idea why) although there were lots of other glasses available. A kettle was provided in the room but no mugs, tea, coffee etc so a bit pointless really. A good shower but, like others have said, why no toilet roll holder? Walls between rooms are paper thin so take earplugs! Sadly I wouldn’t stay here again.

I stayed in one of the cabins with my daughter and her boyfriend at the beginning of May. I loved the place, its trustic with deers in the field beside the cabins and fabulous views outside of snow capped mountains in the distance, the kitchen is brilliant with loads of storage and all you need for cooking serving and cleaning there. I have been travelling for a month and stayed in lots of places and this was one of the nicer places. No soap or shampoo but that wasn't in the others either. The beds were dressed, and towels and a heater provided in each room. The beds are comfy and rooms clean. I'd have no hesitation in staying again.

This place had lovely views and very comfortable rooms (including no bunks - which is rare for a hostel), a decent kitchen, and a generally homely atmosphere. Clearly there are sections that are still being worked on, but very promising.

Stayed here one night with a friend, very lovely staff! Amazing kitchen. We stayed in a three bed cabin with en-suite, very large and warm with the heater! Beds are very comfy but one of the beds had dirty sheets. Is situated about 10km out of the main town however you can’t beat waking up to that view!

I really wanted to like this place after reading the reviews, but after a month of travelling in New Zealand, sadly this property just didn’t do it for me. Granted, the position commands stunning views (and to see deer from the kitchen window is wonderful), but there’s a lot which could be improved. Spacious cabin unit, but absolutely nowhere to hang/store clothes. Kettle provided, but no mugs. Our room featured a fist-sized hole in the wall, covered by a map pinned across it. Adequate bathroom, but no soap whatsoever (the only place, in a month of staying in hostels) and no toilet-roll holder. Fantastically well-equipped kitchen, but no spices or cooking oil for guests to use. Kitchen surfaces and crockery were sparkling clean, but we had cobwebs in our cabin curtains. Pool table was available - but with a massive rip in the baize. The staff seemed uninterested in their guests- we were there two nights and the host didn’t speak to us once. On the positive side, we appreciated the log-fire in the Barn area, especially on a damp, chilly evening. WiFi in the Barn was adequate, and sunset views lovely. The points raised are easy fixes, and, if the owner cares enough, she could transform a barely-OK stay into a truly memorable experience for her guests.

I am not usually one to write a review but unfortunately this has to be done. This place only has the kitchen as a good feature, except that the pans and pots aren't good quality. But that's not the problem, the amenities are very old and not well maintained at all. Our family was poorly looked after with ripped walls. Our toilet wasn't working and the shower wasn't either. We have told the reception about that hoping to get it sorted but all we got was a poor response with no care to deal with it. To top it all up, we thought to play pool and the pool table looked like it was 20 years old, not looked after and very poor cue, went to the reception once again and they didn't have any new one. I would not recommend that place, the price is over rated, 270$ for 2 nights for 4 people, you are better off getting a cabin or tent with shared facilities.

We stayed for two nights over Christmas 2018 and this is by the far the nicest backpackers lodge I've ever stayed in. The kitchen was extremely well-equipped and spotlessly clean despite the lodge being fully booked. We enjoyed using the BBQ outside to make our Christmas feast, and the magnificent views from the large wooden table. The cabin was cosy and clean, and very quiet, very comfortable indeed. To top off our wonderful experience, the staff posted a Christmas cake that we'd left behind, all without any fuss and so quickly. Amazing. We can't wait for our next trip.

We luckily only stayed for one night. The cabin for 4 has seen better days and was threadbare. The kitchen and wifi were 100m away up the hill and were a little cramped given the size of the place. The views were tremendous however which you get to enjoy as you are 10kms out of town and all on your lonesome

This place was lovely, very clean and homely feeling. Few slight changes to be made like car parking at main building, hooks in dorms would be nice and WiFi in the dorm would be great. Bed was comfy and very clean. Amazing views I would stay again Thankyou
