Detailed Reviews
We stayed in a shared room (4 beds). I liked that we had a washroom designated for our room and my wife dislikes bunk beds so it was good we had normal one-level beds. Kitchen had plenty of cooking stations which was good cause it always seemed busy in there (especially after 8pm).

Booked a private cabin here and for a backpackers accommodation we were blown away by the quality of the cabin.
Comfortable beds, spacious cabin with a small deck to sit outside. Although the bathrooms and toilets were shared they were always clean and tidy and we had no issues whilst using them.
We didn’t want to leave-would highly recommend if visiting Te Anau!

Te Anau Lakefront Backpackers is manned by friendly and extremely helpful staff. Do note that the counter is not manned 24 hours (I think it is from 9am to 8pm), so if you have any requests for the next morning it's best to check with them the evening before. Room is a little old and basic with minimal space to walk about. Same goes with the bathroom, although helpfully the basin area offers a countertop to place your toiletries. A 2-person bedroom is drastically different from a 3-person one (where our friends stay), as the former is a bedroom with shared living space (sofa, kitchen) while the latter has its own kitchen. The hostel offers overnight storage at NZ$4/bag/night and has a shared coin-operated laundry room.

We stayed in a self contained triple shared room and were pleasantly surprised how comfortable it was. The only draw back was the shower..... the water went everywhere on the floor, but saying that, the water was nice and hot.
The bed was amazingly comfortable and the room (with the heater on low) was incredibly cozy. The best night sleep we have had in weeks. Definitely recommend this place.

I made a mistake by booking a queens size room for me and my mate, as it was almost full our only option was to take their last room for the night as well and change the day after to one room.
The two rooms we had the first night was great, bed was nice and it did not really feel like a backpackers. Second night we change room to on with bunk beds and that was awful, the bed felt like it was about to fall apart, the madras was to small for the bed and the room had a bad smell.
However overall it was an experience for my friend who never stayed in a backpackers before

We were so pleasantly surprised by how nice this hostel was. We booked a private en suite room and it seemed brand new, especially the bathroom which had a really nice shower. Plus a stunning location with lake views and our own balcony. We had a really good sleep and the kitchen and lounge areas were nice to hang out in too.

Very very basic hostel to say it’s not super cheap. Only had two plug sockets and one light in a room of four. Bathroom dated but shower worked well. Kitchen good. Wifi absolutely terrible and seemed to turn off in the evenings. Fine for what we needed it for - a place to stay after the glow worm caves and milford sound. Wouldn’t rush back.

Great location, with lovely views of the lake. We stayed for 2 nights either side of a Milford sound day trip. Well worth travelling to Te Anau to do the trip from there, rather than from Queenstown. The hostel has all the amenities that you need including kitchen, shared storage, fridge, etc. Very clean room. Great base to explore Fjordland. Happy to recommend.

We booked a night through hotels.com in a loft room which had en-suite bathroom and a balcony. The view was great and the room was beautifully set up. Reception was only till 8pm but that didn’t cause any issue for us. There was plenty of parking. We’d happily return. A small fridge with milk would have made it a bit better.

Stayed here with my friend in a cabin around Christmas time 2022. The whole of NZ was currently struggling with staff shortages, but LakeFront Backpackers did not let this affect their quality. Cosy cabin with extremely clean bathrooms close by. A spacious kitchen which was kept very well clean and tidy, which made everyone respect the space much more than usual. Great location close to town with lovely outdoor cooking and dining facilities to be used at leisure. Best backpackers I have ever stayed at.
