Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My wife and I were touring New Zealand, on a 15-day tour arranged through Travelmarvel by APT, and so all hotel arrangements were made in advance by them. For that reason, I have no idea of the cost of the room or how well the hotel communicates with customers making direct bookings. We stayed here for one night, after visiting Milford Sound on our way from Queenstown to Dunedin. The hotel was quite dated, but fine for our needs. As a large group, we were allocated room near the rear of the hotel, so had no real view. However, as the hotel is situated on the shore of Lake Te Anau, just across a relatively quiet road, this meant it was ideal for catching the beautiful sunset over the lake and mountains. The room was fairly spacious and had a comfortable bed, which was the most important thing for us on a one-night stay. I’ll attach photos of the sunset to this review to show the advantage of the hotel location.

We stayed here for 2 nights with our birding group. Although the hotel is located across the street from the lake there are no views of it from the rooms. It's overall relatively modern when compared to the other hotels/motels we stayed at throughout New Zealand which were shabby and rundown. The room was on the small side as was the bathroom and the shower barely drained at all (how could housekeeping not notice when they cleaned the room?).
The most serious problem was with the attached restaurant where we ate one dinner and breakfast on 2 mornings. Dinner was a buffet that included many different types of meat selection but not a single vegetarian one. When I brought this to the managers attention he seemed rather put-upon. Even their salad offerings were poor - a tossed salad is not whole lettuce leaves stuffed into a bowl. Breakfast was industrial quality food - greasy and starchy. If you stay here I'd avoid the restaurant.

Nice big complex with friendly reception staff. Room was nice and fairly spacious but bathroom was a bit cramped (for big people). Everything was as clean as a whistle. No microwave in room - assuming that we were being encouraged to utilise the motel's on-site restaurant. Oh, and the parking spaces are REALLY narrow.

Thank you for your review, we are pleased that you enjoyed the location of the hotel and your meals in our on-site restaurant. While we don't have air conditioning in our rooms, we are happy to provide fans to guests during the warmer summer months.

The Kingsgate in Te Anau is an older hotel but makes for a comfortable stay. The bed was very comfortable and the shower has great pressure.

The rooms get pretty hot in summer but we were provided a very good fan which really helped.

Didn’t try the restaurant but the menu looked pretty good!

Would stay again.

We stayed at this hotel for one night. The location is very convenient, halfway between the town center and the nearby park paths that allow you to go around the lake on foot or by bike. Quiet setting, lake front within walking distance, spacious and clean room. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Useful and convenient free parking in front of the entrance of the structure.
The breakfast good with salty and sweet, not excessive in the choice but pleases everyone.

I also recommend the hotel for longer stays than just one night.

This was a very basic motel room and the most expensive accommodation we have had so far, too expensive for what we got. There was a gentleman at reception plus 2 other staff and he didn’t offer to help some older ladies carry their luggage down the stairs. The buffet was wonderful and the rest of the staff were friendly. I would not recommend.

We both were very disappointed in the customer service. When we checked in the lady was not very helpful when asking about the local area and what to do she was very short with us and not plesent. We traveled all around the south island as we were on honeymoon and stayed in many hotels and both this kingsgate and kingsgate in dunedin were hotels we will jot recommend,in fact all of the other hotels gave somethings small as a gesture to our honeymoon but Kingsgate didn't want to know.We will not recommend both hotels to anyone we know going there from Ireland.

The hotel is a long building, so it would be difficult to get to a room far from the reception. The reception is open 24 hours a day, which was good.
The room was clean and spacious, which was nice.
The restaurants in town are close by, but only the bar is open after 9pm.
The only place that serves food is The Mooth Bar, and they only serve basic meals. If you are going on the glowing insect tour, it is best to eat beforehand.

This hotel looks very basic from the outside but makes up for it with the amazing & friendly team. From check in we were greeted by friendly staff at the desk & they also upgraded us as well which was unexpected.
The room was warm & clean, had all the amenities for an overnight stay.
We also had dinner at the onsite restaurant, food was very good but nowhere near as good as the staff on that night. Daniel & Joseph reminded me again of how much I loved being part of hospitality and what a fulfilled industry it is.
Breakfast service was good, not a huge buffet but the quality of food that was on offer made up for it and of course seeing Daniel there again. He took the time during the busy service just to come say hi to us :)
Only small hiccup was that when I asked about the "welcome amenities" that I received an email about prior to my arrival, the staff had no idea what it was and was a shame as I was really looking forward to seeing what it was.
However, this will definitely be my choice of hotel whenever I am in Te Anau.

Sorry I did not use the laundry facilities at this hotel, however most of the laundry facilities I used at hotels in NZ were quite cheap just a few dollars and easy to use.
