Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Used to be a good basic little campsite but now IT IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, the trust are trying to get it back up and running. Stayed here many years ago when Murray Gunn was in residence. Upon arrival I was disrespected and felt an invasion of privacy. I thought that the owners first and second impressions were enough for me to continue driving to a different lodge/campground. First there was a rude comment ready for my common questions. As I figured out where else to go I was surprised by the owner abruptly opening up the door of my van, that I was resting my back on and had to catch myself from falling out. The rude comments continued by telling me I was in the way so I hurried away. Never been disrespected at a hotel/ lodge like that before in my life. The owner could use a forever vacation from that job.

Had stayed at Gunn's Camp while tramping a few years ago and returned recently with my wife. The position of the camp worked well with us doing some of the walks in the area and visiting Milford. There is no pretense at luxury - even take your own cooking pots - but for my money the cozy, rustic and quirky atmosphere more than compensates. Our cabin was comfortable and warmed by a fire which the proprietors lit for us, the double bed was very comfortable (we hired bedding to avoid carrying it for one night) and was made up for us by our hosts. The proprietors seemed very friendly and willing to help in any way. In my view, Gunn's camp is definitely worth experiencing, although some might find stepping outside your hut in bare feet into two inches of fresh snow on a night toilet trip (as happened on my first visit), to be pushing the boundaries of enjoyment. Yes, I would go back and probably will if the opportunity offers.

We stayed three nights in this fantastic campground in the remote Hollyford Valley. Absolutely loved the history and the setting. Perfect location for exploring such a beautiful area of NZ. Hosts were brilliant and really accommodating. Highly recommend stepping back in time, unplugging and relaxing at Gunns camp.

An outstanding beautiful addition to a visit at touristy Milford Sound ... its an old miners small camp ground probably with 10-15 sites for campers and old small lodges ... absolutely worth a visit ... :) ... we found it on Campers Mate

We stayed 4 nights at Gunn's camp. It served as an excellent base for doing the numerous walks and activities available - much better than driving back and forth from Te Anau. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The cabins are basic but very comfortable, and the wood stove was a bonus. The whole place has a quirky charm that we enjoyed. A patch of paradise in a stunning location. If you enjoy the simple things in life you will love this place.

We are happy that we took the drive down to Gunn’s Camp while driving to Milford Sound. We did not rent a cabin but we really enjoyed speaking with the folks running the place. Their character and humor can been seen through out the property. Swing on by and smile.

originally we planned to stay just for one night at this place as we wanted to board the Milford Sound cruise, but we had such an amazing experience in this place that we ended up staying for 3 days. The managers are really kind and welcoming. they offered their help to lit up the firewood and they always assisted us in anyway possible, always with a smile on their faces. The camp is next to the river and is surrounded by nature. there's plenty of walks to do nearby, and the shared facilities were very clean. the rooms in which we stayed had a nice firewood and it was warm and cosy. they also have a shop and a museum which is free for guests. we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this place.
