Detailed Reviews
Arrived at this quaint well situated motel in Te Anau.....a 5 minute walk to all the attractions of Te Anau including the lake, shops and the excellent cinema. We were welcomed by John and later met his mother Tilly ....both were informative and helpful to the extent that they upgraded us for the remainder of our stay. Tilly explained that they are in the process of upgrading the accommodation. Already there are noticeable new appliances and outdoor furniture. We did experience difficulties in finding a plug for a hairdryer near a mirror.... but this was great place to stay. It was very clean and tidy with substantial and attractive grounds that were well tended. There is a large playground area for children.
We did an overnight trip one night to Doubtful Sound and were delighted to be able to leave our car and most of our luggage until we got back.
This motel has great bones and the family are working hard to maximise its potential. We would heartily recommend this motel to anyone looking for good value, family orientated accommodation provided in a personal and extremely friendly manner in Te Anau.

Upon arrival I was greeted in such a genuinely friendly and courteous way that I felt instantly welcome. Rodger is such an accommodating manager and showed me several different types of room to suit my budget. The room was very comfortable and well kitted out. We loved the huge TV with Netflix and Disney Plus and the brand new bathroom! Thank you to the managers here - we hope to see you again!

We had an upstairs lakeview studio for one night and absolutely loved it! The room was lovely and big, with a very comfy bed, table and chairs and a sofa. We had a fab view of the lake and it was wonderful to sit on the balcony just taking it all in with a cup of tea! We were welcomed by the owner, he was very helpful and chatty and gave us some fresh milk for our room. We were on a trip to Milford Sound early the next day and so we were able to leave our car on the premises, just had to move it around the back where it was perfectly safe. i wish we'd had more time in Te Anau because we'd have loved to have stayed in this little motel for longer.

I think we found Te Anau's secret gem. In our drive around town to look for where to stay, we were drawn to Alpine View by the sense that a lot of care went into it . Based on the logic that a cared-for facility = cared-for guests, we went to make inquiries. John and Tilly at reception sealed the deal with how welcoming and helpful they were. Our room was fresh, clean, and tidy (*two huge thumbs up to the cleaning staff!), the kitchenette was a bonus, and the location was easy and convenient. In fact, we extended our stay and spent my birthday there because we liked it so much. Thanks for a fantastic stay!!!

Dirty room. Terrible service. Rude staff. Refused to clean the room or make beds. Parking lot was empty and they still refused to let us park before check in time. Manager John charged 3% for credit card and then gave invoice without this charge. Highly recommend against this place.

Dear Usha, I'd like to clarify a number of misconceptions, half-truths and outright lies with your review. To start with, you and your family turned up at 11 am and demanded to be allowed to park here. You mention that this was because 'the parking lot was empty' however; we allow guests to park outside their rooms. The parking spot outside a room may be vacant due to the room being vacant or if the owner has decided to go to any number of the beautiful tourist destinations here in Te Anau. In our guests interest, we don't just let any big-headed, over-entitled tourist park in a car park that doesn't belong to them. The park that you randomly chose was actually already taken by a guest that had gone out. As we clarified this with you, you became more confrontational and verbally abusive with members of staff and further demanding that our office be opened up to let you know which room you were staying in so you could park. This is again, despite there being free parking out on the road. We did this for you. As you mentioned; there is a 3% credit card surcharge on all credit card transactions at the Alpine View Motel. As you requested an invoice stating the 3% credit card surcharge; one was provided for you at your request. Our room was clearly not dirty on the first night of your stay as you didn't mention this at all, as I'm sure you would have done. Indeed, from our perspective you only went to being insufferable on the afternoon of the second day when your room wasn't serviced. To further clarify, we use a simple 'please service my room' sign that guests hang on the door of their room to indicate that they would like their room to be serviced. In our many years of experience; we've never needed to explain this simple concept due to it being so widespread. It even has it's own Collins Dictionary entry under https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/please-clean-my-room-sign Apparently; this was you and your families first trip to a Motel with a 4 star rating as 'you've been to four or five motels and they've never had this policy before' which I find absolutely ridiculous. Regardless, we then had your room serviced with fresh clean towels. As explained; we don't make guests beds during their stay with us and you found it suitable to verbally abuse staff whilst in the process of servicing your room. Your attitude & confrontational behavior only seemed to be directed at female members of staff (including the owner of the establishment) and as soon as a male member of staff was present; this was toned down considerably. Normally, we relish all feedback here at Alpine View Motel as opportunities to enhance our customer experience but in this particular case; you were one of the rudest, most verbally abusive guests we've had the misfortune of dealing with. As a result, we don't want your business at Alpine View Motel or any of our affiliate sites as a result. Regards,

We booked a cheaper room and didnt have high expectations. We were quite surprised at just how clean and "well preserved " our room was. It was a window into the 70's but not tacky and simply requiring an upgrade. It was a trip down memory lane and reminded me of road trips in Australia with my parents as a child.
Without any prompting or complaints we were offered an upgrade on our second night and this room was without fault with all modern fitout. The whole family pitches into the running of this motel and we received exceptional friendly service. We would definitely stay there again.

An extremely warm welcome by a very knowledgeable gentleman host meant we could get exploring (and eating) immediately.
Very clean and the bedding smelled devine. Lovely warm thick towels and a new shower.
Well appointed. Just one thing, a curtain over the door would be good for those needing darkness to sleep but this would not stop me coming back.
A fantastic price for a great place with very approachable staff!

Dear Barneygirl33 Thanks for your lovely review and feedback. It really made me smile this morning as I was reading your review and I'm delighted that I was able to point you in the right direction and get your Te Anau Adventure started off on the right foot. Otherwise; we can't wait to welcome you back to us in the near future. Warm regards; John Mackenzie General Manager

Big regret. Extremely unhappy with condescending attitude, lack of hospitality, and unprofessionalism of owners Rodger and Tilly.
We made a booking on the website and selected 10pm ETA (this time option was available on the website, and was clearly written on our confirmation email). When I realised night of that they hadn’t let me know late arrival arrangements, I emailed well within reception hours to ask what to do and over some correspondence received a series of very condescending emails with a snarky attitude. After charging us $40 simply to access a key lockbox, the owners wrote back in a condescending tone "Most people just pay attention to our confirmation email ... The confirmation email clearly states 8pm for reception closure, but you decided to ignore that for whatever reason... We can’t wait up for people at all hours of the night… No other job works 12 hours per day…” Our email said 10pm ETA, since that option was available on the website.
Further, after our stay, they sarcastically thanked us for leaving rubbish on the bathroom floor (not true at all), and seemed to accuse me of lying when I let them know our schedule was delayed because we were told Homer Tunnel was closing that night, saying it wasn't closed and asking how I managed to communicate if I was in Milford Sound the previous night since there is no cell service there (even though the restaurant and hotel at Milford Sound has wifi to send emails…).
They also weren’t there in reception at 9:30am for checkout.
The room was comfortable, but the immediate snarky attitude and subsequent unprofessionalism was so off-putting it made me regret giving my business to this place.

Not sure why you regarded my attitude as snarky, but as I said in my reply to you, most people actually READ the confirmation email and don't ignore our office hours because they feel entitled to show up whenever they please. Further, also in the email is the fact that we charge a fee for the use of the emergency lockbox, designed to be used in case of emergency, not because you failed to read our confirmation email and ignore it. But instead, you decide to complain about everything. There was nothing sarcastic about you leaving a used condom on the floor of the bathroom, the cleaning staff took a photo and advised me of it. Needless to say it was disgusting and we should have charged you for that, but didn't, its certainly not the job of the motel staff to pick up that sort of rubbish when you could have simply used the bin provided.

We stayed 2 nights at the Alpine View Motel Te Anau, the unit although very 1960s, was clean and spacious. However we received a nasty surprise after checking out, my husband’s credit card had been debited $150- for extra cleaning under the pretext that we had left “vomit left all over the unit”. This was totally untrue as neither my husband nor I had been ill/sick and we know we had left the unit in a tidy and reasonable condition upon departure. We subsequently contacted the owner refuting these allegations and the extra cleaning charge as they had to be a mistake, however the owner was adamant and later provided some photos, although of poor quality and with no dates nor times on the photos.
Sadly, we strongly believe these photos are fake and were most likely fabricated by the owner in order to justify his additional cleaning charge. We feel cheated and robbed.
Our advice to travellers is to avoid this place altogether, or take as many photos as possible before you check out. Do not rely on the honesty of the owners of this property. We had a very bad experience that has tainted an otherwise great holiday.
