I’m so glad we booked House of Wood. It was our first time in NZ and after a very long flight from England and a two hour car drive House of Wood, Te Anau was the first stop of our holiday. Meryl is a lovely lady, and even though she was rushed off her feet cooking for other guests, she made us feel very welcome after our long journey, settling us in beautifully (the bed was so comfortable). Breakfast on both mornings was exceptional and her homemade bread is really really good (I should have asked for her recipe). Both she and her husband Cliff were both very knowledgeable and helpful in where to go and what walks to do, especially as my husband has knee problems when walking any great distance. I can’t recommend House of Wood enough, great location, good friendly company, clean and comfortable, excellent food, what more can I say! Thank you for a lovely stay.

The House of Wood is a beautiful place -- with an excellent location -- close to everything. We loved our room and our hosts. Homemade jellies and breads! Yummy!!! Reasonably priced. Anyone that we know traveling to New Zealand we will definitely send to House of Wood. Enjoy.

I want to pre-empt this review by saying that the owner of the House of Wood is lovely. Unfortunately, it's a bit harder to find something nice to say about this accommodation...

We had high hopes for the House of Wood - the place looks amazing on the website. When we arrived, we were completely underwhelmed (not a plank to be seen!). Our accommodation was not at the main house, but rather, a very tired and musty little bunker a few streets away. The tired, gloomy and bizarrely decorated place that greeted us was not at all what we expected - and things got worse pretty quickly. Along with a few fairly major hiccups - the central heating didn't work, and the hot water system had been shut off (no hot showers!), we were plagued with a range of minor issues. The owner forgot to take us through the convoluted process required to lock the doors; the remote for the tv didn't work; the whole house was rank with the smell of damp/mould; the bathrooms weren't clean (in fact, we were somewhat puzzled to find draws full of partially used soap in - literally 50 bars of used soap!). We discovered a hole in the laundry wall that had been plugged up with a pair of mens undies – innovative yes, but I can think of better options. The laundry itself was grimy and dirty, with rubbish, plastic bags and cleaning products stacked all over the place. The outdoor setting was mouldy and unstable - and an unfortunate little bird had expired, and was slowly decomposing, by the back door. Frankly, the whole place had a 'murder house' vibe, and we were glad that our days were spent far, far away...

Response from Merle665, Owner at House Of Wood
Responded 26 Sept 2013
I am upset that the visitors did not mention any of these problems to us at the time and that it took them 11 months to write the review. I think calling it the "murder" house was harsh. We didn't kill the bird. We had a problem with rain water coming into the house in places and had it fixed but the plumber was the problem. They will be pleased to know that we have done major renovations on the cottage mentioned, and have a new kitchen, laundry and flooring throughout so that should solve the problems in future.

We have stayed in House of Wood twice. We chose it the second time because the owner Merle was so nice and helpful, and the place so unusual and comfortable. This time I had just broken my wrist the week before we arrived there, and Merle couldn't have been more attentive and accommodating. I would recommend it to anyone. The house is clean, very comfortable, and so centrally situated that we could leave our rental car and walk everwhere. On top of that Merle is very hospitable, and cannot do enough to make your stay a memorable one. Thanks to her I coped with my wrist, and didn't let it spoil our time in Te Anau.

We enjoyed a 2 day stay in November 2014. Merle & Cliff welcomed us with coffee and cake and were friendly and helpful, offering useful information about the local tourist attractions. The House of Wood (built completely of wood as you would expect) stands out from all the other properties around. Our bedroom with en-suite was very comfortable and met all our requirements. Breakfasts, selected from many options, were excellent. Merle also went out of her way to put us in touch with another B&B in Arrowtown where we were heading on to.

A big thankyou to hosts Merle and Cliff for a welcoming stay. Merle cooked a lovely brekky and she really went out of her way for me with a little personal issue I experienced. We were downstairs in a room with a queen bed which was much too firm for us, the bathroom was upstairs but was just ours and there were bathrobes we could use. A great location, a very short walk to centre of town. Thanks again!

Wee recently had the opportunity to stay in Te Anau for 3 nights. The House of Wood proved to be a very nice Bed and Breakfast with fine owners who were very helpful with our travel arrangements. Breakfast was always great and were very pleased.

We had a very enjoyable stay at the House of Wood. Merle gave us lots of helpful info, including info on a short drive up to a viewpoint over Te Anau and surrounding areas which was truly beautiful. Breakfasts were yummy and we could choose what we wanted on our cooked breakfast. The room was more than adequate for a short stay and the views of the mountains from the balcony was lovely. Excellent place to stay in Te Anau, which is a good base if you want to do the glow worms trip (highly recommended) and the Milford Sounds cruise (a MUST!) which we did. Also great if you want to do any hiking as we saw there were lots of tracks in the area. Lots of shops and restaurants just round the corner from the B&B - not to mention the beautiful lake.

This is a very nice B&B with 3 different room configurations. We had a double with ensuite - big comfortable bed, lovely linen, good bathroom with lovely soft towels. Merle does all her own laundry including ironing the sheets, so it was all very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent with several choices and home made bread - pity I am gluten free! Just a short stroll to the little town, shops and restaurants.
