Situated a short distance from Oban, the location has its own views out over Halfmoon Bay/the Strait and close proximity to stunning Hammond Bay & the view fulled track to Ackers Point. A comfortable and warm house, the upstairs room is definitely the 'room with the view' and visiting kaka. The hosts are welcoming, knowledgeable, and assist with transportation/shuttle. And the local kiwi is a great nightly view. A good base while enjoying the activities of Rakiura.

I can't speak highly enough about your hospitality and kindness as hosts. I will definitely come again. The accommodation is situated in a beautiful bay looking over the water. They were very flexible in willing to responding to my accommodation request at such short notice

thanks for this great review! we have found out that the most important component of hosting is to enjoy time together and to enjoy ourselves instead of just to provide a professional service to paying guests. to have a great time, especially a memorable one, it needs always to be on a similar wavelength. thanks for being such like-minded guests!

The review by Bravo01 mirrors our experience at Jensen Bay. This is a nice place to stay, but in the scheme of all the other places we stayed in our 4 weeks in NZ we can only assess as average. We stayed in the upstairs room, it is spacious and has lovely views out to the well maintained garden and the sea beyond. The sofa in front of the patio doors is a lovely spot to sit and read when it rains. However when the sun is out it is very hot even with the doors open. The bed was the smallest of our travels, with bed linen that wasn’t luxurious in any way. We had two single duvets for the double bed which wasn’t ideal. The bed is on a plinth which was awkward to negotiate in the night when we needed the loo. For anyone with mobility issues we could not recommend it. Breakfasts were ok, fruit salad excellent, the cooked element was a poached egg on a cold plate and the breads were pretty hard, not freshly baked. The location is circa 20 minutes walk from Oban. We were kindly offered lifts to town and many restaurants will offer return journeys free of charge. It would have been nice if we could have borrowed the bikes in the garage to explore a bit further, we did ask but were told they needed to be serviced. We stayed three nights and the room was not serviced during this time.

We have had a special time at Jensen Bay House. As others have indicated, Manfred is an excellent host. He was attentive and catered to some special requests. Our room was quite nice with lovely views over the nearby bay. We walked back and forth to town in the dry weather and he picked us up in the rain. The breakfast was very good! The house is located very near a good track to the lighthouse. We went out at night and saw penguins at the beach. I would definitely stay here again if visiting Stewart Island.

The highlight of our trip around New Zealand was our stay with Manfred at Jensen Bay House. We had a beautiful room at the top of the house with a four-poster bed; breakfast was superb; and the hospitality the Manfred provided was second-to-none. Highlights were watching the sunset from the ferry that Manfred's family runs between Ula Island and Stewart Island; electric biking around Oban; and stunning DOC walks right on our doorstep. There is also excellent food in Oban - from the world's best fish & chip van, to a very tasty menu in the town's main pub, to fine dining at the Church Hill restaurant. Just remember to bring a torch for your walks home so that you have a chance to spot the penguins on the beaches at night. It's about a 2k beach-side stroll from the village back to Jensen Bay - perfect after a hearty meal in the evenings!

We read all the TripAdvisor and AirBNB reviews and chose Jensen Bay House on the basis of the recommendations and the advertised promise of a “5 star experience”. Sadly our expectations were not met. Our host Manfred was friendly at times but his direct and sometimes indifferent manner had us on edge somewhat. Our room “Above and Overall” was comfortable enough but the bed was small by normal accommodation standards and the plinth it sat on tricky in the night. The wardrobe door combination, which included the small tea making space, was awkward to operate. We had beautiful clear days which meant that the room was very hot to sit in during the day and little options to escape the sun. The room has a deck off it but no furniture to sit on. The room is located next to the house water pump which operates when any water is drawn off in the house. Whilst it was noticeable, it hadn’t been an issue until our final night when a toilet cistern somewhere in the house malfunctioned which resulted in the pump operating every 4 minutes. We never thought we would be using ear plugs on Stewart Island at night! Jensen Bay House is located 2.5km from Oban village in a very quiet spot near the end of the road. Manfred dropped us off in the village at night for dinner which was appreciated as the walk can be long if you have been walking all day as we had. Oban has a well stocked 4 square supermarket with surprisingly reasonable prices. Eating was limited the weekend we visited. Only the pub was open in the village which was booked out in the restaurant but bar food was available at reasonable prices. Beer was cheap! There was an expensive restaurant in a church on the hill just out of the village also. The Kai Kart was closed. So were we just unlucky? Manfred had a knee complaint that was clearly troubling him. He did apologise for “not being at his usual cordial best” but this was our once in a lifetime visit to Stewart Island so we need to call it as we see it.

We loved our stay at Jensen Bay House. Manfred is a wonderful host and went out of his way to make our stay one we will always remember. We stayed in the upstairs room and it was very private and quiet with a wonderful view.

My wife and I had the joy of staying with the generous host Manfred and his lovely son Rakiora. The moment we arrived we fell in love with this house. We had planned on staying for two nights, but decided to stay an extra night. And if we hadn't had anything planned in advance, we would have stayed forever. The house is full of beautiful details that reminds you on what special Island you are. Manfred and Raki are so generous and can arrange beautiful walks, on places where you would not go otherwise. We hope to able to visit Jensen Bay House again, somewhere in the futures.
