Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I can't speak highly enough about your hospitality and kindness as hosts. I will definitely come again. The accommodation is situated in a beautiful bay looking over the water. They were very flexible in willing to responding to my accommodation request at such short notice

Situated a short distance from Oban, the location has its own views out over Halfmoon Bay/the Strait and close proximity to stunning Hammond Bay & the view fulled track to Ackers Point. A comfortable and warm house, the upstairs room is definitely the 'room with the view' and visiting kaka. The hosts are welcoming, knowledgeable, and assist with transportation/shuttle. And the local kiwi is a great nightly view. A good base while enjoying the activities of Rakiura.

thanks for this great review! we have found out that the most important component of hosting is to enjoy time together and to enjoy ourselves instead of just to provide a professional service to paying guests. to have a great time, especially a memorable one, it needs always to be on a similar wavelength. thanks for being such like-minded guests!

The review by Bravo01 mirrors our experience at Jensen Bay.
This is a nice place to stay, but in the scheme of all the other places we stayed in our 4 weeks in NZ we can only assess as average.
We stayed in the upstairs room, it is spacious and has lovely views out to the well maintained garden and the sea beyond. The sofa in front of the patio doors is a lovely spot to sit and read when it rains. However when the sun is out it is very hot even with the doors open.
The bed was the smallest of our travels, with bed linen that wasn’t luxurious in any way. We had two single duvets for the double bed which wasn’t ideal. The bed is on a plinth which was awkward to negotiate in the night when we needed the loo. For anyone with mobility issues we could not recommend it.
Breakfasts were ok, fruit salad excellent, the cooked element was a poached egg on a cold plate and the breads were pretty hard, not freshly baked.
The location is circa 20 minutes walk from Oban. We were kindly offered lifts to town and many restaurants will offer return journeys free of charge. It would have been nice if we could have borrowed the bikes in the garage to explore a bit further, we did ask but were told they needed to be serviced.
We stayed three nights and the room was not serviced during this time.

We read all the TripAdvisor and AirBNB reviews and chose Jensen Bay House on the basis of the recommendations and the advertised promise of a “5 star experience”. Sadly our expectations were not met. Our host Manfred was friendly at times but his direct and sometimes indifferent manner had us on edge somewhat. Our room “Above and Overall” was comfortable enough but the bed was small by normal accommodation standards and the plinth it sat on tricky in the night. The wardrobe door combination, which included the small tea making space, was awkward to operate. We had beautiful clear days which meant that the room was very hot to sit in during the day and little options to escape the sun. The room has a deck off it but no furniture to sit on. The room is located next to the house water pump which operates when any water is drawn off in the house. Whilst it was noticeable, it hadn’t been an issue until our final night when a toilet cistern somewhere in the house malfunctioned which resulted in the pump operating every 4 minutes. We never thought we would be using ear plugs on Stewart Island at night!
Jensen Bay House is located 2.5km from Oban village in a very quiet spot near the end of the road. Manfred dropped us off in the village at night for dinner which was appreciated as the walk can be long if you have been walking all day as we had.
Oban has a well stocked 4 square supermarket with surprisingly reasonable prices. Eating was limited the weekend we visited. Only the pub was open in the village which was booked out in the restaurant but bar food was available at reasonable prices. Beer was cheap! There was an expensive restaurant in a church on the hill just out of the village also. The Kai Kart was closed.
So were we just unlucky? Manfred had a knee complaint that was clearly troubling him. He did apologise for “not being at his usual cordial best” but this was our once in a lifetime visit to Stewart Island so we need to call it as we see it.

Dear Peter, thanks for this great review. I still feel quite mixed about any review as I know that our place and the way we run it is quite different and not conventional. Some like you have an absolute positive experience, for others it seems to be not their cup of tea. anyway: I'm really happy that you gave us an encouraging and positive feedback and review. welcome back any time!

This is an eye-catching place and in a good location for the Ackers Point walk which is well worth the effort, as well as other easy walks. It's a 30min pleasant walk along the coast road (not exactly busy) into 'town', which we were happy to do several times, though Manfred and Ulrike were happy to run us there if we needed. As it's light till late in summer no problems and eating is done early!
The bedroom design means the windows cannot be fully curtained off, so bring an eye mask if you're light sensitive. It's also a 'shoes off' place so bring indoor shoes if you're feet need support, or you don't wish to use the airline slippers provided.

We experienced a few glitches in communication: we were given the wrong bank codes (more than once) when paying the deposit; and our visit got off to a bad start as we waited 30' to be picked up from the cold and windy harbour front, and only then as another hotel pick up rang the owners on our behalf. This was despite having confirmed the arrival time and pick up details the day before. So do double check your travel details are received and understood.
Then we were told we couldn't have our (chosen and booked!) room till the following day as the incumbents wanted to stay an extra day (not sure why we were the ones who had to be put out!). We were put in the 'better' of the two rooms (upstairs) for our first night, but changing rooms is always a pain as it wastes precious time unpacking and repacking. The downstairs room arguably has the better view and is conveniently next to the open kitchen for making cups of tea, but it also looks directly onto the entrance deck area, so there is no privacy unless you close the curtains, which rather negates having a deck and a view!
Manfred is gregarious; Ulrike isn't there as much, but there are constant comings and goings, and friends visiting, so plenty of 'local life' to observe!

Getting cash is also a problem (supposedly cash only payment) as the ATMs at Invercargill airport and in Oban supermarket didn't work for foreign cards. Eating options are limited: top of the range is Churchill. Kai Cart fish & chip van also a good experience if you can eat inside, and South Sea Hotel another good option. Hot ginger drink at the Kiwi French cafe excellent (not open for dinner sadly but lunches looked good though we didn't sample them).

Nihil nisi bene - is evidently not always possible when having to host guests like the Foxbot - couple. the only 'house-rule': 'not to have shoes on inside the house' was challenged immediately on arrival and not observed on reasons of ' orthopaedic ' problems. there is a choice of 19 different china and indian and sri lankan teas, but the client's choice was 'english breakfast' and no other tea... so, we purchased this coca cola of teas! Foxbot's whole stewart island experience was muddled by pre-conception and expectations not appropriate for any traveller nowadays. the 'foxbot'couple was not only hard to please, but also demanding to the limit, uneducated and just ignorant. even before their totally distorting review they would not have been welcome back.

What an excellent weekend spent on gorgeous Rakiura in the fine company of some great locals. Jensen Bay House was outstanding, both because the house and the accomodations were exquisite, and also because the proprietor was such an amazing host. The view from the room was too lovely for words, and the generous and helpful imparting of local knowledge was priceless. Rakiura is a very special place, and so is Jensen Bay House. I hope we go back soon.

Dear Manfred, Rakiura and Luis,
Thank you for a wonderful, one of a kind, once in a lifetime stay and experience on Stewart Island.
Thanks for the walks (also the "detour" Manfred :) ), the deep personal talks and an unexplainably fantastic hospitality - it has been the greatest pleasure!

And to all guests coming here. Do as my family and I did (2 adults and 2 teenagers). Make many, many plans on what you want to see and do on Stewart Island before you come. And when you arrive, through your plans away and do as Manfred says and does :) :)

And just a PS. Everything about Manfreds house is top class. Everything is immaculate. If i could, I would give this place 6 stars :)
