Have stayed a week and it's been fantastic. Well priced. Kakas, local parrots, hang out on the veranda and you can see the sun rise over the sea as you eat breakfast. It has a well equipped kitchen, the beds are comfy and it's just the right sized place to feel homey. It's an amazing island too.

I stayed one night and I wish I had stayed longer. Very nice backpackers on top of a hill with a wonderful view of the bay. Cosy living room with fire place. Feel like home. Sandra came and pick me up at the ferry. She knows a lot about the island and will tell you where to go to see the best of the island if you only here for a short stay. Highlight of my stay, at breakfast a Kaka came and ate from my hand. You can hear kiwis at night and if you are lucky you might even see one !!

The sundeck is an amazing spot to watch the sun rise. Friendly staff, cosy common room and well equiped kitchen. It's quite far to walk from the ferry (and it really is on top of a steep hill), but if you ask for it the staff will pick you up and drop you off.

Waking up in the hostel and getting ready to explore Stewart Island I jumped into the shower only to find there was no hot water, so I had a cold shower. Later that same day after exploring beautiful Stewart Island and all it had to offer, we came back to the hostel looking forward to getting cleaned up and having a nice dinner. Unfortunately, once again there was no hot water for a shower.
When we went to cook dinner, it looked like the only cooker in the hostel hadn't been cleaned since in months.

we are really sorry you couldn´t enjoy your stay with us. Our business is a privat homestay on Stewart Island and loved by most of our costumers for the homelike lifestyle. Living here means running hot water mostly on the fireplace and it can happen that we are running out. For those cases we have a hot shower running on power - always hot. Sadly I didn´t get informed by the costumer of the missing hot water or any other issues till their departure after the fully used stay of 4 booked nights - otherwise I could have given them an alternative straight away. We will work to ensure those troubles won´t occur in the future.

I stayed at the hilltop backpackers for two nights and really enjoyed it. Everybody was super friendly and helpful with good knowledge about Stewart island. You can get a free pick-up if you want to and even a drop off. It has a great atmosphere and a cozy communal area with a fire pit, tv, music and lots of places to sit and relax. You have an amazing view over half moon bay as well and you should try getting up to see the sunrise while having breakfast. I definitely recommend staying here if you want to have an unique experience in Stewart island.

Exceptionally warm and friendly atmosphere helped by it's smallness and cuddly cat, Mr Socks. Perfect for relaxing after a day's exploration of the wonderful walks around the town and further afield. The hostel is perfectly situated to watch some beautiful sun rises and the hostel workers (/woofers) are very helpful with regards what are the best things to do on the island with the time you have. Plenty of games, dvds and books to entertain, as well as the simple pleasure of sitting outside and spending time with Pauly the kaka and if you're lucky a kiwi stumbling around.

A nice little hostel on stewart island. I stayed two nights, one before and one after the north west circuit. Pretty good place to relaxand takea time off. True that the street up to the hostel is very steep, but I could easily walk it up withmy big backpack. But sandra also offer to pick you up at the ferry, so no Problem. The view from up there is great, the rooms & kitchen are clean and you feel welcome over there. It might not be for everyone but I enjoyed my stay. I had different feelings leaving my stuff at the hostel, but nothing happened to them, also there are lockers at the DOC visitor Center nearby.

A truly unique place - fantastic welcome, amazing staff, cosy and friendly livingroom. I immediately felt like « at home ». I enjoyed the true "backpacker" community with the wwoofers. They came to pick me up at the ferry and shared a wealth of information about the walks and the local area. Every morning I could enjoy an wonderful sunrise on the sea. I saw many Kaka flying around and also a kiwi ! (Just down hill) The dorm was clean and quiet. The kitchen was well equipped. Would love to return here to explore the area further - Would definitely recommend!

Pros:
1. Nice bedroom which ranch slider out onto a sun drenched deck surrounded by trees at one end and a view at the other end.
2. Pleasant host who was chatty and offered me a lift in her car.
Cons:
1. It's not a 10 minute walk from the wharf as advertised, unless you are superfit. It took 10 minutes to walk to their street. It then took me another 10 minutes to walk up their street. It's really steep and you must be physically able.
2. No eftpos or credit card facilities. It's basically just someone's house, not actually converted to a backpackers.
3. No keys. It wasn't a problem, but it's strange just leaving your valuables in an unlocked room an an unlocked house.
4. The door between the shower room and the toilet room wouldn't lock.
5. The kitchen was full of dirty dishes from semi permanent guests.
6. There was quite a bit of laundry waiting to be done on the laundry/hallway floor outside my bedroom.
7. There was a very loud noise. It sounded like a water pump turning on and off. It went through the night. I tried to stop the water cistern from tickling water, but that didn't help.

Thank you for your feedback. Without feedback we can´t know what our guest like/dislike, so it´s great! Some of the things you pointed out are simply "life on Stewart Island". We live here from rainwater - and you can´t get the rainwater into the house taps without a sometimes noisy waterpump. Same with the room keys. Normal houses on Stewart Island don´t have keys existing - it is the safest place in the country and that´s how we live. We are a Backpackers Homestay and that´s what most of our guest love about it - it´s more of a home than a "real backpackers". Also we have a manager now living in house - so we can work on the other points. Thank you for your review and enjoy your travels.

We stayed here for one night in a double room. The sister's manager came to pick up us at the ferry station and drove us to the hostel. She showed us the room and the place. We haven't seen anybody from the management after that, except for the wwoofers thats are in the place. The place is good for one night but not more. They advert free bikes but they are in poor condition (no brakes, full of rust) and not usuable. The place is not very clean, it's like if you entered in a shared house. Last bad thing is that we haven't had the chance to enjoy a hot shower. At the day of our arrival water was cold, the same the next morning. And nobody around so you can resolve that...
Except that the hostel is well situated, they also offer free washing machine.

Thanks for your Review Nicolas. We are sorry that you didn´t enjoy your stay as much as most other guest do. Still, reviews like yours are helping us to see what needs to be worked on. We got new bikes by now (normal road bikes) and have a manager living in house. We heat our water on Stewart Island with the fireplace, so thinks like cold showers won´t happen again as the fire now is stocked up regular. Thank you and enjoy your travels
