We had a fantastic stay in Turner cottage on Stewart Island. Our only regret is we could not stay longer! Ian and Pip offer a wonderful, friendly service - picking us up to and from the ferry, a water taxi ride in the early hours out to Ulva island and back again, and providing us with lots of useful tips and information on the abundant birds, and life on the island. The cottage is a few minutes walk uphill from the centre of town, but well secluded and private, surrounded by native bush. Inside the cottage there was everything you could want - a very comfy bed, a spacious-feeling lounge and kitchen, and delicious plunger coffee. The visiting Kaka was a bonus too! There are several beautiful walks nearby, and the observation rock lookout is just up the hill and round the corner with beautiful views over the Paterson inlet. We will definitely be back.

We stayed at the Bach in February 2015 and loved the location and the quality of the accommodation. The Bach was secluded, quiet, and very spacious. We were close to a wonderful walking trail and also close enough to the town of Oban to get there in a few minutes. The Bach also comes with a car (included in the price), which was great for getting to town or other hiking trails. It was the perfect place to stay while we were on Steward Island. If you are considering Port O Call, do note that there is no WiFi at the Bach but you can get free WiFi (Steward Library WiFi) at a hotspot by parking by the library in Oban.

I stayed in Turner Cottage for 3 nights in March 13 and thought it was fabulous. It is in an excellent location, close to Oban township. It was so relaxing and there are some great walks on Stewart Island. I enjoyed having a wood fire and being able to sit outside on the deck watching the beautiful birds fly around and come and visit. I would definitely visit Turner Cottage again.

We spent three nights at The Bach; our goal was to rest and relax, and this is the perfect place, quiet and peaceful. Tha Bach is really nice, but we couldn't hardly find pictures of it before booking. A pity. If our hosts had more good pictures of the Bach, I am pretty sure that they would have more guests... I attach some pics we took to share with Tripadvisor visitors. Use of a car included. To sum up, we are really DELIGHTED... We'll definetely come back!!

I went to Stewart Island with my partner simply to take time out from the intensity and stress of Sydney life. It was everything I was hoping for.

Set back from the main road behind trees and ferns it offered total privacy and peace and quiet. The condition and amenity were fantastic. Not only were all the basics covered, it was the little things you noticed.

The bed was really comfortable - not too soft, the matress was pretty new by the feel of it, the quilts were beautiful and fresh, same for the pillows. No need to bring your own real coffee - ground coffee and a plunger were waiting. The cooking knives were of good quality and had recently been sharpened. The washing machine wasn't whatever was cheapest but a good front loader. Anyway - you get the idea. A beautiful hideaway only 5 minutes walk to the shops, with real attention to detail.

That's before even mentioning Pip who runs the place with her husband. I booked 5 weeks beforehand and let her know that we were flying in and what time the flight would be landing. No endless back and forth "confriming". She was simply there in her compact 4 wheel drive waiting to pick us up. She gave us a quick tour of the village then showed us to the cottage. She picked up very quickly on the fact we were there just to switch off instead of doing activiteis, and just let us be. It was just the perfect welcome really.

In short - I know there are tons of other places on Stewart Island, but seriously after such an incredibly positive experience I will not be tempted to look elsewhere if I'm ever lucky enough to go back.

We stayed in both Turner Cottage and The Bach and loved both of them. Turner Cottage is tucked away, so although you're close to the amenities of the town, you feel as if you're in the middle of the bush. The Bach has excellent access to Ackers Point to see the nightime spectacle of the blue pengiuns and sooty shearwaters returning to their burrows. The use of the jeep at the Bach means easy access to many of the day walks. Ian and Phillippa were very welcoming and looked after us splendidly. Wished we'd been able to stay longer!

We are so pleased to spend two nights at Turner Cottage on Stewart Island and wish it could have been more. We are ranking this location as one of our stand out experiences of our whole holiday.

The island has a lovely community feel and everyone was so friendly and welcoming.
Ian and Phillipa looked after us well very well, collecting us and taking us back on departure to the port. We also used Ian’s water taxi to take us on a delightful trip to Ulva Island (not to be missed) and they also recommended a Kiwi spotting trip with their friend Philip which was also terrific. Lovely people.

The cottage itself has a great rustic feel. Surprisingly spacious with full kitchen including large gas oven, microwave full size fridge/freezer as well as laundry facilities. A spacious lounge and a wood fired burner which we used on a chilly second night leaving us lovely and cosy. There is also a second single bed if needed allowing the cottage to cater for three.

The cottage is actually fairly close to the port with access to a four square general store and well as tourist information and a couple of other shops (and a small cinema!).

Don’t miss the opportunity of coming here. It is unique.

Situated just outside town, the Bach Cottage is smartly kept. Use of the car provided with the cottage is very handy, especially for reaching trailheads which are not convenient to town. The self-catering setup is excellent, and Philippa was very attentive to every request we had, however small. Not too many folks get to this part of New Zealand and for hikers and bird lovers, it is not to be missed.

I recently stayed in The Bach section of Port of Call. It was great. Beautiful both inside and out with brilliant views. The kitchen was excellently set out and stocked with everything you could ever need. The bed was one of the best I have slept in since starting my tour of New Zealand. The hosts Philippa & Ian Wilson were really friendly and helpful. Starting with picking me up from the harbour and giving me quick tour of the main village to help me find my bearings. They gave a great insight into the island and what to with the time I had. Including and afternoon on Ulva Island (out of this world) and also something I would have missed. The Kakapo Encounter, it was a once in a lifetime chance to see a very rare bird with a very defined cheeky personality up close. They even let me have use of one of there cars! I am female and travelling alone and wasn’t going to go to Stewart Island as I thought it would be too remote and I wouldn’t feel safe. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Everyone was friendly and I never felt insecure at anytime, even while on Ulva practically entirely alone on the island apart from some students. This is fantastic place to go whether you are discovering NZ sole or with company. Stewart Island is the Jewel in the South Islands crown and shouldn’t be missed and I would recommend Port of Call to anyone travelling to the Island.

We stayed in the B&B room at Pip & Ian's home. They were the best hosts during our month long trip to NZ. Pip has an artist's eye which is evidenced in every corner and garden spot on their property. We felt like we were home except when we basked at the view. They made it possible for us to enjoy much of what the island offers. Our stay was too brief so we'll definitely return....Stewart's Island was the highlight of our NZ adventure.
