We had the best time staying at the lodge over a long weekend, Forest was the best host and really went out of his way to help us along! Room was super clean and tidy with a comfortable bed. The views are incredible! Lovely and relaxing place to stay and use as a base to explore.
The lodge was a very pleasant surprise, rooms were clean, we had room no 3 with views over the Bay. Bathroom very nice, a shower and a toilet and also clean. Lisa is a super host. Very funny and welcoming. It was a pity she had some days off after that and we didn't see her again. Then we had Nikita who was much more reserved, and quiet. Conversations with her were cordial rather than genuinely. Later we saw her again on the ferry and it was obvious she didn't want to talk to us. But that's fine. Each to their own but if you work in the hospitality you need to be more friendly . But the lodge is great, and you can make your own dinners in the kitchen there at night. Breakfast is great, but if you want eggs, there is a 4 square where you can buy eggs and then you can cook eggs in the kitchen there if you don't want just cereals, toast and fruit for breakfast. They don't do lunches or dinners but you can use the kitchen when you want. By the way, it's like a normal kitchen in a normal house. And they have lots of pots and pans and 2 stoves, also fridge for you to use. The only downside to the lodge is that is has a very steep drive and you can walk to town( 10 minutes) but you also have to walk back( puff puff) or you can get a taxi for $15- which we didn't do. On the plus side it's good if you want to get fit. Overall it's a huge recommendation to go stay in this lodge. We glad we did this for our 40th wedding anniversary.…
Room and ensuite were ample, with also a sepate room for luggage and storage, clean and well furnished. We were welcomed by Lisa, who offered helpful advice and assisted us in whatever way we needed help. Breakfast was of good standard, The views were superb. Walking from Oban village one has to climb a steepish road., no problems in general, unless a visitor has trouble with walking. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you, Lisa.
A fantastic destination and great place to stay. The rooms are fantastic and perfect luggage room come walk in wardrobe to get rid of all your luggage and unpack. Enjoyed the large table and delicious breakfasts each morning looking through a postcard like view over the harbour. Many thanks to our host Lisa for sorting out a fantastic kiwi spotting tour that was appropriate for my mother to enjoy and experience kiwi in the wild (thanks for making this happen) If your considering Stewart Island lock this accommodation in, it exceeded our expectations. AAA++ Cheers Robbie & AJ
Fabulous accomodation, close to town and amenities. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Very knowledgeable on local information and had great suggestions of things to do. Very clean and comfortable. Spectacular views from the terrace. Would definitely stay here again.
Super comfortable rooms, cosy and warm - even in the bathroom. The views are second to none. Lisa and her team are incredible. Readily giving us the inside local scoops. Very knowledgeable ... and super accommodating. Thanks Lis! Delicious breakfasts too. Definitely coming again.
We made a conscious decision to stay at Stewart Island Lodge despite the relatively high price and we are very glad we did . All the rooms have truly outstanding views looking out over Oban Bay . We could take in the tranquility , the coming and going of boats of all sizes and some amazing sunrises . The lodge is well appointed and very comfortable . Bedrooms are of a good size with an ensuite .Breakfasts in the central comfortable lounge were excellent . The Manager Lisa is a delightful person and her advice on various activities was spot on . She is a real asset to guests staying with her knowledge and attitude . Lisas influence also showed in the quality eco friendly items throughout the lodge . The loveliest place to stay on wonderful Stewart Island !!
This was our first time to Stewart Island so we weren’t sure what to expect, especially the weather. With regard to the weather it couldn’t have been much better. There was the inevitable wind but apart from that it was fine and moderately warm. At the Lodge the outside seating was sheltered from the wind but still allowed an almost uninterrupted view of Oban and the bay. Our room was spacious and the ensuite had everything would expec with regard to toiletries etc. Breakfast was on a self service continental basis but all laid out ready to choose whatever one felt inclined to partake of. The communal dining area and the lounge area all had good views, there was a shuttle service from the ferry terminal to/from the lodge. The staff connected with the lodge all had the time to chat, were very courteous and welcoming. …
We travelled as 3 couples - each wanting our own room. So the lodge provided the best option as we had three rooms next to one another - and all identical. The space inside is great, complete with a walk in wardrobe (with space for luggage and a mini fridge and coffee making facilities) and then a good sized bathroom with bath and good sized shower. What's great about the lodge is the rooms have plenty of space and right outside the rooms is a long communal deck with spectacular views over Half Moon Bay and a couple of large outdoor tables. When staying here many years ago, when it was operated more as a lodge, we were offered canapes and pre-dinner drinks but these days with Real Journey's owning the lodge, this service is not offered. However the lounge area is available to all and there is a kitchen that guests can use. We availed ourselves of the facilities and made our own pre-dinner cocktails! There were plenty of glasses and other kitchen items for what we needed. In the mornings we had a continental Breakfast that our host Danny set up. It comprised a range of cereals, fruit, bagels (including gluten free ones along with gluten free bread), cheese etc. Also a range of three juices and plunger coffees and a range of teas. The location of the lodge is great - a steep but not so long road to climb up and down when going into the town but that was fine. What we did find a little odd was that we were told our rooms would not be serviced "due to Covid?! Having stayed at loads of NZ accommodation over the past few months, this is the first time I have come across a lodge saying this - in a country where we have no community transmission. I think this is a cop out - and really doesn't reflect well on Real Journey's if they using this as an excuse for possibly a lack of staff to service rooms. Our host at the lodge was Danny, and he greeted us when we arrived and told us about the lodge and our rooms. He was obviously new and a little nervous but lovely. We did also meet Lisa when we arrived - who most of the reviews mention here, but she was at the end of her shift - but she did ensure we had all the info we needed. We certainly did get the impression that many staff are "over it" -- an unrelenting throng of visitors to the island with no let up since NZ closed its borders and everyone headed to Stewart Island! I would stay at Stewart Island Lodge again - great location and views!…
The rooms are comfortable and clean, lounge area is very nice and there are fantastic views over the bay. They no longer do drinks as they used to, and the breakfasts were basic continental fare but okay. For the price per night it was a little underwhelming but still the best place given limited options on Stewart Island. The staff were great but the manager was clearly over working this season and made it known.
