Lunch and drinks before getting our return ferry to Bluff. Interesting place with a real mix of locals and a few primarily Kiwi tourists. Lunch was nice enough. We dined in the bar side, but there was also a dining room.
Can't complain for $100 a night. Showers were super hot & great pressure! Was fine with communal facilities. Perfect location to eat, sleep, drink, enter the Sunday night quiz night. Didn't hear any noise in room from the pub, just sometimes from people in room next door. We'd definitely stay here again.
Stayed the night in an olde worlde bedroom overlooking the harbour. It was wonderful. Beautiful meal in the restaurant. Had the $70 crayfish tail. Bigger and better than the tail I paid $140 for at Kaikoura. My petal had the fabulous blue cod.
Stayed two nights here after walking the Rakiura track. Staff were awesome, friendly and helpful. Our room overlooked the ocean. The room was warm and super comfy. All of the facilities (bathroom, showers, lounge, laundry) were great. Ate in restaurant both nights and enjoyed the cod, both baked and deep fried. Would definitely stay here again next time!
We dodged a bullet here. We were originally going to stay here but found accommodation that better suited our requirements. We did however go for a meal. Grumpy staff who really did not care, we felt that we were an inconvenience to them rather than a welcome guest and food only average Glad that we were not staying there as attitude probably flowed through to the rest of the staff as well
Travel back to the good old days of country pubs that are the hub of a community with reasonable bar prices and great food. Mixed with friendly staff and a beautiful setting and it was a great experience. While most of the food was pub style food there were a couple of choices that would have been well received at any restaurant. My bluefin tuna was exceptional. The accommodations were clean and tidy while being fairly modest. I think a couple of days is sufficient to see what’s available on Stewart Island unless you’re going bush then you could really see how special this natural environment is.
Two great meals - the blue cod fish and chips one night, the baked cod and vegetables the next - washed down with a great selection of brews. Fabulous staff - food service nicely timed, the only problem was not enough nights on our trip t progress further through the menu - we'll be back!
Struggling with COVID enforced staff shortages, the service we got at South Sea Hotel was nothing short of amazing. The food was incredible and the service timely and always with a friendly smile. Room was spacious and showers wonderful.
Make no mistake most travellers to Stewart Island are probably here for hiking and wild life. This is where the South Sea Hotel fits in nicely as it is a no frills up market backpackers. Rooms are basic, clean and relatively quiet. No TV, couldn't get the WiFi to function right but for the odd night thats fine. Separate shared toilets and showers so nothing flash but again basic and clean. On the ground floor is the reception, bar and restaurant. You have a choice of two places to eat, the other being the bar. We ate on several occasions and the food was exceptional and fairly priced. Staff were friendly but bar and reception staff were heavily pushed and under a lot of pressure. Would we stay again? well yes as there isn't a lot else available! Lastly don't be afraid to use the local taxi. There are a lot of hills around Oban and its reasonably priced.…
This is maybe the friendliest hotel ever... great food, great location, great staff and the beer is COLD!!! THere is no other hotel on Stewart Island but this would be the best even if there were others.
