I've stayed in backpackers hostels in New Plymouth, Wellington, Napier, near Tongariro, Invercargill and now Stewart Island. I've stayed in other accommodations in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin. So I have plenty of experience to judge by. I stayed in a private room, double bed. Fee: $64 NZ + $4 for hiring of a towel,so not really even a great deal....

Located in the heart of Oban/Halfmoon Bay and walking distance from ferry and flight drop off. Unfortunately not great value as quite basic and run down. Very noisy until late with banging doors, thumping steps on wooden walkways and central kitchen & lounge often not settling till nearly midnight. However kitchen and lounge very well equipped for communal facilities.

Great for our purposes. Pretty basic but clean and warm. Really welcoming staff who took the time to show us around despite the busy time when the ferry arrives and all come to check in at once. Kitchen/lounge had a great vibe.

Staff were helpful and accommodating, facilities exacting what you would expect, free Wi-Fi and close to local transport hub as well as the local takeaways. A little noisey at times which is expected. Once again great staff made the trip

Clean and well priced. Nice communal kitchen lounge area. Wifi is awful but it's to be expected I guess seeing as how remote it is. The room we were in was out of range. Lovely staff. Showers are hot and clean. Luggage store is a shed in the garden and isn't secure.

I was genuinely not expecting to find this little gem on the island. The family run hostel is so nice. The family have a huge passion to not to be the best (which they are) but to make sure that every guest has the best experience on Stewart Island while they are there. The bedrooms are simple but everything you...

We had a twin bed room, very basic with just the 2 beds and the floor for our bags, set along the side of the building with a walkway looking out over the garden. Very quiet, though we could hear our neighbours chatting quite clearly and distant snores. Woken by birdsong (and one day, by rain, lots of it). Clean...

This hostel is pretty amazing! Every Wednesday they have a free dessert, this time it was pavlova! You can have a bunk bed for 36 or a tent for 20. You get blankets in the tent so it's okay during the night. There are heaps of showers and the lounge is amazing! Close to everything in Oban, the place to...

We stayed in a four bed dorm overnight before starting the Rakiura Great Walk. The kitchen and large lounge was busy because guests were avoiding the wet day, but there was plenty of space. Large sofas, lots of cooking equipment. The wifi was good in the reception area, but a bit dodgy anywhere else. The new owners are enthusiastic, efficient...
