Glendaruel, nestled between Halfmoon Bay and Golden Bay, is ideally situated to help you maximise your time here. Overlooking Paterson Inlet and Ulva Island, it is bordered on two sides by uninterrupted vistas of native forest, alive with birdsong. The village of Oban on one side and the water taxis to Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary on the other are but a few minutes walk away.Glendaruel garden, a fusion of native and exotic plantings, extends over several levels and melds into the forest, which New Zealanders call ‘the bush’. The garden has featured in magazines (New Zealand Gardener, Weekend Gardener and My Home and Garden) and in the book, Great Gardens of New Zealand, by Derek Fell.Birds love it! Tui and kaka dispute the treetops, weka and, increasingly, kiwi patrol the paths. What a thrill it was when a Department of Conservation worker pointed out to me that a kiwi had left his/her calling card in the middle of one of my garden paths! As for me, I love gardening, kayaking, cooking, travelling and languages. Stewart Island has been a preferred holiday destination for almost all my life and my permanent home since 2000. Helping you to make the most of your time on this beautiful island is my focus. I meet you at the ferry or air terminal and take you back at the end of your stay.My Cairn terrier, MacPherson, enthusiastically joins me in extending A Hundred, Thousand Welcomes! and maintaining the special blend of Scottish and Kiwi hospitality that so many of Glendaruel’s guests have commented on.

Our second time on Stewart Island, but first time at Glendaruel and we loved it. Raylene is a great host and a fund of knowledge on all matters relating to the island. From the moment she picks you up at the ferry terminal, you feel at home. The location of Glendaruel is perfect, between Oban and Golden Bay, with beautiful views all around and wonderful bird sound everywhere. An easy walk into Oban for dinner at night - a bit steep on the way back, but that's all to the good after a full meal!
Our room upstairs was very comfortable and adjacent to the large guest lounge with wrap around views and an abundance of books and information on the island and NZ in general. A great place to relax after a day's walking.
We also loved the informal breakfasts and chance to chat to Raylene and the other guest who was staying at the time.
Stewart Island is a very special place and we were very glad that we had included it in our itinerary again. And Glendaruel was the perfect place to make the most of it.
Highly recommended. Thank you Raylene!

Husband and i visited Stewart Island for a little over 5 days and we had a amazing experience. We resided at Glendaurel and Raylene was a amazing host. The B&B was a short walk to town and so close to the small walks that you could do during your stay there. We did the Rakiura track and Raylene always made sure that breakfast was available on time. She would communicate really well and would keep everything around very tidy and clean. She is super knowledgeable and was always happy to provide us with anything we were after during our stay. Her garden was just mind blowing and this outlooks onto a valley full of stewart island birds. So after a long day of doing all touristy stuff if you just wish to rest up or chill in then this is the place - with a beautiful collection of book in house - one can really not complaint :) thank you Raylene.

I had a lovely! time at Glendural. I stayed for four nights, and was very grateful for the comforts of limitless heating from the boiler (I came dressed for summer, cold snap meant 10 degrees and below!), fabulous breakfasts, beautiful views, super comfy bed, and great company.
I am definitely rebooking here if I’m back in Stewart island.

Great hosts. They are locals and will show you all the great places to visit. The B&B is a short walk to town. Some rooms have views. Great breakfast. The rooms were clean and quiet. The only draw-back is it's not in town.

We stayed with Raylene at her B&B and we were delighted with our choice. Very friendly and excellent accommodation in a beautiful setting.

Breakfast. was exactly what we needed before heading off on our adventures. The weather was amazing and we saw lots of kiwis as well as a fabulous walking tour on Ulva Island.

Highly recommend.

Given the price of the place (240 NZD at the time of our visit in August 2013), we expected a special place. It turned out, however, that Glendaruel is a very regular, average B&B like many others we had stayed before. This is why we cannot give a better rating. There's nothing wrong with the B&B (the attentiveness of the host is probably even above average), and if the price hadn't been the one of room in a really good hotel, we would have been happy. But as it stands, it just doesn't fit.

Thank you for the opportunity to explain where Glendaruel Bed and Breakfast 'fits' into the Stewart Island accommodation range. I hope that I can also do justice to our beautiful island by outlining the challenge providers here face in terms of the additional costs of fuel and other commodities, all of which must be shipped across Foveaux Strait. For example, electricity here costs 4 times the mainland rate. Bed and Breakfast rates on Stewart Island range from $90.00 to over $500.00 per night for a double room. At a mid-range $240.00 per night for a queen or king room with ensuite for two people, a choice of cooked/continental breakfast and all the help I can offer my guests so that they can make the most of their time here, I believe Glendaruel offers good value. Visitors to my website can access information and pictures of each bedroom and its ensuite, guest lounge, breakfast room, gardens and surrounding sea and forest views. A visit to the Stewart Island website www.stewartisland.co.nz provides a comprehensive overview of accommodation choices. Winter here can provide a very relaxing and peaceful get-away but does not attract large numbers of visitors. Those accommodation providers who choose to stay open face high fuel/operating costs. For this reason I do not offer winter rates. The report made favourable mention of 'attentiveness' to clients. As I went to extra lengths for these clients, this is gratifying. In this instance, the clients were offered a free ride out to the road end, so that they could make the most of a coastal walk on their last day. On their return I would meet them at the ferry terminal with their luggage. The round trip for me is 14 kilometres and takes a good half hour on our winding, narrow roads. This offer is standard practice at Glendaruel. What was extra was the request that I also return to the road end to pick them up and bring them back to the ferry terminal. This I did. The Island taxi service informs me that a one way trip to the road end is $30.00. At the risk of alienating the taxi service, I shall continue to offer such help as I can to ensure my guests a rich experience of Stewart Island hospitality. Raylene Waddell Glendaruel

Location is far from town centre, requires uphill walking. There are several rooms in the house, be sure to avoid a tiny room near garage. Bed quality poor and house is cluttered. Overall not an ideal place to stay.

I am very sorry that this client was less than satisfied with his stay at Glendaruel. The reservation for this family was made through a travel agency which provides a guide for their clients and from which I have received several reservations. The agency thus already has first hand knowledge of what Glendaruel has to offer. However there seems to have been a misunderstanding between the agency and the client as to the specific needs and expectations of this client, needs and expectations which went far beyond the accepted format of Bed & Breakfast. There was an immediate demand that my kitchen be made available and a complaint that exterior doors could not be locked from the inside to prevent a child escaping. It is surely a matter of safety that exterior doors be readily opened from the inside. The room: this is advertised as a single room priced at a rate exactly half the rate of a double room, yet with all the same amenities - ensuite, table and chairs, tea/coffee making facilities. I offer it to families as it is suitable for two children, one of whom can sleep on the trundle bed that pulls out from underneath the single bed. Children love it and of course it comes at a very reasonable price for the parents. It was not my intention nor expectation that one of the parents would use this room but one parent did and chose to sleep on the trundle bed. Distance from town: Glendaruel is about 5-8 minutes’ walk downhill into town. Yes, it is an uphill walk back, but where I detect tiredness etc. in my guests, I always offer a lift downtown or back. In this case, I handed the keys of my car to the guide for the entire two days of this family's stay. Service: As well as my car, I made my kitchen available so that they could cook a meal, set a table for them in the dining room, cleaned up afterwards and also washed and dried a large amount of clothing. All this at no extra cost but because that is how I like to run my Bed and Breakfast. I would respectfully point out to this complainant that his family received genuine service, generosity and kindness at Glendaruel

It was a very rough ride on the ferry to Stewart Island. We met other couples in the ferry who were going there for vacations too. When we arrived, our host Raylene picked us up from the terminal. We noticed that other B&B operators also picked up the other couples, so it seems that it is a standard service in Stewart Island. Glendaruel is a lovely place. We had a nice host and we had nice breakfast too. We visited our friends who stayed in the other B&Bs and realised they had a better deal - cheaper and better place. All in all, we had a good stay but could have saved some money staying in another place.

It is pleasing to hear that these clients thought Glendaruel lovely and found both the breakfasts and me ‘nice’. I set a priority on providing a full cooked breakfast for guests, as well as having tea/coffee facilities available in every room. Glendaruel Bed and Breakfast is moderately priced (NZ$120.00 per person per night, 2015-2016 season) and offers a range of services at no extra or hidden cost: courtesy transfers, laundry, internet, mountain bikes. Helping guests make the most of their stay here is a major focus – advice, assistance booking trips, the use of my car to get guests where they need to be. The room ‘upstairs’ is a queen room with ensuite; the rooms downstairs are a single room with ensuite and a king/twin room with a large ensuite with bath. This room has French doors opening to a lovely deck area. All rooms look out on to a panorama of native forest with not a building in sight. Considerable renovations to bedrooms and ensuites were made at the end of last season.

We spent six weeks touring New Zealand and stayed primarily in bed and breakfast accommodations. Glendaruel was among the very best we encountered, comfortable, clean and well-located. Raylene was very helpful in arranging the tours we wanted, including the famed Philip Smith night tour during which we viewed kiwi in the wild, a rare treat. We will never forget our experiences on Stewart Island and found Glendaruel to be the perfect home base for our adventures. Our room was part of a spacious, upstairs suite with excellent views of the bay, surrounded by a stunning garden. The bird life here is rich and feeding the kakas from the balcony was a special treat.
