This is an excellent place to stay in Stewart Island, with a perfect rate between price and accommodation. A house with no more than 28 guests, nice common room and nice garden. The place create good opportunities to discuss and share nice moments together.
This place was so good as a solo traveler, I ended up changing my ferry and staying 2 extra nights. Plenty to do including snorkeling, hiking the Rakiura track, spotting kiwi, sunsets down on the beach, and the best part was coming “home” to such a cozy spot to catch up with new friends, cook in the beautiful kitchen, or get cozy on the couch watching Netflix with everyone. Hannah was an outstanding manager and made everything flow so smoothly - as I’ve traveled the rest of South Island, I’ve only confirmed my suspicions that everyone who stays here has the best time!
Feels more like staying with friends than being in a hostel. Nice lounge with netflix, fresh bread in the morning. There's no reception like in ither hostels. I loved my stay there and they've got good tips for spotting kiwis.
The hostel itself has good location and facilities. But could smell damp/mould upon entering the property and it was horrendous in the downstairs 4 bed bunk room I stayed in. My clothes stank afterwards and I found it hard to fall asleep with such an over powering smell, in addition to the fact that I was concerned about the health effects. In the morning there was so much condensation on the small window despite only two occupants. Not sure if the upstairs rooms were any better.
We spent two nights at Bunkers Backpackers in a twin private room and enjoyed our stay. The room was pretty small, but it was clean and we slept well. The hosts at the time were Kelvin and Tess and they were awesome. We met some nice people there in the community kitchen and lounge. The only thing that keeps me from giving 5 stars, is there are not enough restroom and shower facilities in the house for the number of people staying there. The facilities are on the ground floor and there are only 2. Our room was up some pretty steep stairs and we were happy we were traveling light. All in all, it was fine for 2 nights and couldn’t beat the price.
Bunkers has a home atmosphere with different room options. There are plenty of places to lounge, fix a meal and eat it and enjoy the lovely outdoors. Very convenient location to the ferry terminal. We were greeted by a friendly host who steered in the direction of some local attractions and recommended beaches. Laundry facilities available on the premises and free wifi. We found our 7 person bunk room clean, spacious and with fresh air. Clean toilets and showers too.
Used a single room for myself. Bed is good, can be cold but had my window open durimg the night. In the living room there is a lot to read or have a chat with other travellers. Due to the fire heating, it has a bit of a smell due to that, nothing extreme. Very nice American running this backpackers. Doing his very best. Good price, therefore 5 star, if more expensive 4. Remember this is not an hotel. Try it, you will like it 😀
One of the best hostel experiences we've had. Excellent atmosphere, helped on by Kelvin & Tess who are managing the place, lots of good chats and because it's a small hostel you get to know everyone. Nice and warm and cosy too with everything you need and right in town, perfect!
Had a lovely private room with a double bed, very inexpensive for accommodation on Stewart Island. Was extremely clean and quirky, could not have asked for a better place to come back to after days of hiking / exploring. Has a cupboard to store baggage for the day of check out. Stewart island itself is most definitely worth a visit!!!! especially if you want to see wild Kiwi birds. We were only there for two nights and saw a wild kiwi on our second night which was magical :D - we did not even pay for one of those expensive kiwi tours, we simply went for a stroll between 11pm and 12am and came across a kiwi foraging on the grass at traill park!!! GREAT TRIP, will definitely be back sometime in the future.
