This is an excellent place to stay in Stewart Island, with a perfect rate between price and accommodation. A house with no more than 28 guests, nice common room and nice garden. The place create good opportunities to discuss and share nice moments together.

Had a lovely private room with a double bed, very inexpensive for accommodation on Stewart Island. Was extremely clean and quirky, could not have asked for a better place to come back to after days of hiking / exploring. Has a cupboard to store baggage for the day of check out. Stewart island itself is most definitely worth a visit!!!! especially if you want to see wild Kiwi birds. We were only there for two nights and saw a wild kiwi on our second night which was magical :D - we did not even pay for one of those expensive kiwi tours, we simply went for a stroll between 11pm and 12am and came across a kiwi foraging on the grass at traill park!!! GREAT TRIP, will definitely be back sometime in the future.

I stayed at the Bunker backpackers with my two teenage daughters. It is an old character house that has been beautifully renovated into a backpackers. It is a few hundred metres from the ferry terminal so very central. The owner was really friendly and happy to advise on what to do. It is a small hostel. Nice rooms. Not many toilets and showers but it didn't seem to be a problem. Nice kitchen. Cosy lounge. There is free internet and heaps of great DVDs. Because it is so small everyone is really friendly. My kids loved it and wanted to know why we weren't staying longer! Ulva Island is a must to visit. Amazing place and we will be back for longer next time.

I stayed in a dorm room and a double room during my stay at this backpackers. The dorm was ok, wasnt overly fussed about the storage where you placed your stuff in a vertical cupboard (not great if you got one of the 2 top cupboards) but overall the dorm was quite roomy in comparison to some i have stayed in and at least some consideration had been given to storage. The double room was up a seriously steep staircase, the room was a bit cramped but nicely decorated and nice to be able to open the window at night. Kitchen was TINY, i didnt even think about preparing my own food in it, too much hassle. Lounge areas nice. Toilets and showers adequate, laundry good. Power on the island is 4 times more expensive than the mainland so actually i dont recall seeing a dryer come to think of it, so take the risk with the weather (and the weather is VERY changeable) although there is limited under cover washing lines. I think the best thing about this hostel was it proximity to town and that you could get there without having to climb any hills (handy if you are carrying heavy luggage from the ferry depot which by the way is only a 5 min walk away). Stewart island is EXTREMELY hilly so be prepared to get some serious exercise (if you arent very fit like me), although having said that, you can walk along the coastline easily enough. A friendly little place, Ulva island and its prolific birdlife was a highlight for me. As the type of holidaymaker who doesnt like to do too much research beforehand the surprise to me of Stewart Island is that 85% of it is National Park and therefore only accessible to the trampers and trekkers ie no roads. Nevertheless there are ample walking tracks and beaches for the rest of us - what i enjoyed most about Stewart Island (apart from the chilled out locals) was the silence of it at night time - an interesting little place

We spent two nights at Bunkers Backpackers in a twin private room and enjoyed our stay. The room was pretty small, but it was clean and we slept well. The hosts at the time were Kelvin and Tess and they were awesome. We met some nice people there in the community kitchen and lounge. The only thing that keeps me from giving 5 stars, is there are not enough restroom and shower facilities in the house for the number of people staying there. The facilities are on the ground floor and there are only 2. Our room was up some pretty steep stairs and we were happy we were traveling light. All in all, it was fine for 2 nights and couldn’t beat the price.

We enjoyed our stay at Bunkers so much that we extended our trip by another night. Lovely building and outdoor area, very friendly staff and fellow travellers. It's big enough to be social but also small enough to be quiet. I'd definitely recommend it to other travellers and I would definitely stay here again!

We stayed here on Easter Monday after we finished the Rakiura track. A great place to have a shower and warm up in the cosy living room by the wood burner after a few days tramping! Hilary was very welcoming and the free tea and coffee was a real treat in itself ;)

Felt immediately welcome walking through the door. It has such a nice homely feel that its like staying at a friend of a friends house. The kithen/dining room area is lovely and great for socialising and never too busy where you feel like you can't cook. There's a log fire which Hilary kept topped up through out the day - so nice after I came back from my walk and was just relaxing on the couch. Good DVD collection too so you don't get bored at night (in any case you will be out looking for the kiwi birds or the penguins with others from the hostel) Honestly could not praise this hostel enough! Totally made the trip to Stewart Island worth while :) 10/10 goes to Hilary for being such a helpful and friendly host. Also the beds are amazingly comfy!

Bunkers was one of the reasons my stay on Stewart Island was brilliant. It's like the island itself - small, cosy, and everyone sees one another at some point in the lounge/kitchen. For some reason people just don't hang out in the rooms - I guess the warmth of the fireplace helps!

Kaka are frequent visitors before sunset, and they can be cheeky. When I was there Alex and Danilo ran the place, and it's impossible to fault them for their work in keeping the place warm and clean and organising activities and dinners.

Sleep couldn't be more peaceful and comfortable, but if you get cold easily as I do, there are 2 or 3 hot water bottles lying around in the kitchen.

I stayed two nights at Bunkers with my son & daughter. I shared a twin room upstairs with my young son and my teen daughter shared a bunk room downstairs with several other lovely ladies.
My room was a small, gabled, and very cute with comfy warm beds. There are three other double rooms up the very steep stairs but it is very quiet.
The dorm rooms are downstairs and are of adequate size.
There are two showers and two toilets, plus two hand basins, all separate so never had to wait in line. Large entrance wet area to leave boots etc.
Cosy living area with wood fire. Kitchen had all we needed. Nice big table and comfy lounge space to hang out and chill in.
Alex & Danilo were very friendly and helpful, working for owners who pop in occasionally.
I had checked out all other accommodation on internet before coming but without knowing the geography of the land it was hard to book wisely, so I was very pleased to arrive and discover we were in the close to all the facilities on the flat part of town, whereas so many other options were in the surrounding hills and bays.
Bunkers is an easy walk from everything.
Loved staying there and would be happy to return next time.
Yes! I will be back :-)
