Detailed Reviews
One of life's little luxuries is a home away from home with truly welcoming hostess Jo and old fashioned comfortable room in heritage cottage in middle of Oban. If you want authentic Stewart Island Hospitality, and a little wisdom and conversation, see if you can get in. Count yourself lucky if you do!

This reminded us of the B & B's we stopped at in Gt.Britian 30 odd years ago. This is an old house but the hospitality is great. Andy met us from the plane and .took us there. Cup of tea and a cookie and told us about Oban. The house is only about 150 metres from the waterfront. There are only 1 double & 1 twin bedroom, shared facilities. Couldn't get over the height of the old bed, comfortable though. Andy does a good breakfast and ferried us back to the plane depot. Jo does volunteer work in the museum

Friendly owners make this a warm and cosy B&B - good sized rooms, nice bathroom and good breakfast all contribute to making this a good spot to stay. Andy is very knowledgable about the island and keen to share!

Jo and Andy are dear people who can help with all kinds of arrangements and, because of their years here, have inside knowledge about all activities. They are in a great location and serve up a lovely breakfast, complete with homemade bread. But, there is no space to unpack, or hang clothes. The double room is so tiny we really tripped over each other and had to store everything under the bed. The tiny lounge area is not ideal for relaxing either, so we tended to spend our free time elsewhere. Do bring your own bath soap, shampoo and conditioner, as well as a hair dryer if needed. These are not provided here, as they are typically elsewhere. Also, internet is very expensive versus other options.

I stayed at Jo and Andy's B&B for four nights recently and had an absolutely brilliant stay. This isn't a B&B for those who want a place that's slick and modern - it's very much for those who are after a good taste of genuine Stewart Island hospitality and who welcome a B&B with some differences. It is a homestay in the fullest sense: unlike most B&Bs, where the owners have their own segregated space, at Jo & Andy's, you are welcomed into their home and treated as a genuine guest. They are happy to offer as much advice and information as you need about the island or to pull up a chair for a chat if you want one. However, they are by no means intrusive and leave you free to come and go as you please.
The house is clean, comfortable, old-fashioned and homely, with beautiful handmade quilts and piles of books to browse through - you could stay six months and still not run out of reading material! The house has excellent central heating and you can control the heating in your own room so that you're warm and cozy in the evenings. The breakfast is lovely, and the first thing they did when I arrived was offer me a cup of tea and homemade cookies.
I had a phenomenal visit on Stewart Island, and this was contributed to in good part by the wonderful hospitality. Jo and Andy are two of the finest people you could hope to meet and offer the perfect introduction to the lovely Stewart Island community. When I visit Stewart Island next, there is no doubt that I will be booking with them again.

If you're looking for a cosy home away from home where you can relax and de-stress, this is the place. Jo and Andy's B&B is in a fantastic location, just a short stroll up from Half Moon Bay/Oban village and diagonally opposite the Department of Conservation Information Centre. It is truly a homestay. The 5 rooms are very comfortable and extra blankets, pillows, hot water bottles etc. are readily available. Bathroom facilities are shared, with the bathrooms being in a good condition. This is not hotel standard accommodation, but rather a slice of kiwi life as it used to be. There is no television in the house, but lots of books and games are available. The included breakfasts are simple, but lovely - a warm porridge with berries and banana, an egg on toast and freshly made bread (with a variety of spreads available.) Jo and Andy are very welcoming and sitting down to have a chat with them is a wonderful way to spend an hour or two. Tariffs are very reasonable. I would highly recommend this B&B to the lower budget traveller who wants to 'get away from it all' or to people for whom meeting interesting people on their journey is a priority for their holiday.

I spent just one night with Jo and Andy in their lovely home and wished I could have stayed longer. The room was very comfortable and breakfast was fantastic. I slept so well! Best of all was getting to chat with Jo and Andy, who are so generous with their space and such wonderful people. Be aware that you are very much sharing their home space, and that resources are scarcer and more expensive on Stewart Island than on the South Island, so don't expect the'perks' of a hotel, like hours on the internet or long hot showers... You'll get something much more valuable in your stay here. I'll be back without a doubt!

On a lovely island, here is a lovely B&B with genuinely welcoming and friendly hosts. Knowledgeable and interesting, they made our stay a wondeful experience and helped to make it a great holiday. Plus great home-made and healthy breakfast. Highly recommended.
