The accommodation for a large group was great comfortable had everything and warm. Very close to town. Good area for a group barbie. But if you do need supplies avoid the 4 square ie bring your own as they are anti vax and I'm sure I got Covid from there. As it was the same time only place on the island where staff didn’t wear masks and. Came home with Covid.
A fantastic, modern motel set in the rainforest with a one minute walk into town. We enjoyed our time staying here. The room also has a BBQ available. This is handy as there is only one restaurant in town and a fish and chip shop. The room had a small kitchen with a microwave and fridge, with tea and coffee making facilities. The beds were super comfortable.
We spent 3 nights at the Kaka Retreat on a recent trip to Stewart Island – loved it. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away to our accommodation and quickly checked in – very efficient. The location is great, less than 5 minute walk into the town center (4-square, restaurant, cafes, etc). There were a number of kakas flying around, but none came to visit us. Also saw lots of other native birds – beautiful bird song here!! The room was very nice, one of a group of 3 motel type rooms, all with spacious verandas. We made use of the small kitchenette to prepare some basic meals and enjoyed the TV (3 or 4 channels) and the free wifi internet. The heater, a definite requirement during our stay, worked well in keeping the room at a suitable temperature. The shower and hot water were very good and the bed was nice and comfortable. Overall we had a great stay here and would definitely recommend it to other travelers.…
We booked to stay for 2 nights for a quick family trip, unfortunately I had managed to book the wrong room type but this was resolved instantly by the owner who was absolutely fantastic and moved us to the 3 bed cottage. The cottage was warm, comfortable and well equipped. We saw 4 kaka who landed really close to us which was amazing. I would highly recommend staying here it is a lovely place with lovely owners.
The Kaka Retreat web site says it is not uncommon to see visiting kaka. And I had one visit my front porch! Don’t feed them however as they are known to destroy furniture should they not receive food. The two bedroomed unit was spacious and very warm. My only improvements would be a bigger shower (again, this one was so small it was hard to wash my hair), oven facilities, and better (light blocking) blinds. But these are suggestions rather than necessities. The location close to town means you can easily get meals from the South Seas Hotel. Diane and Wayne, the hosts, made sure I was well looked after and even dropped me off to the Ulva Island water taxi wharf so I did not need to walk 20 minutes over the hill on a cold morning.
Kaka Retreat is a hidden gem! We made a bulk booking, they were really easy to deal with - everything went really smooth and met all our needs. The accommodation is beautiful. We will definitely be recommending to others in future. Thank you for having us!
We were so impressed with the accommodation, the location and the service! We stayed in Superior Studio. Fabulous. Warm, clean and amazing shower! Lovely continental breakfast as well. Had absolutely everything we needed. We’ll be staying here when we come back. Thanks!
Lovely bush setting with Kaka birds right on your deck. Lots of Tui and wood pigeons all around you. We had the two bedroom cottage which was clean and comfortable and everything supplied was good quality. It was only 5 mins walk down the hill to the hub of Oban. which was very convenient. Very friendly helpful staff too
We are just back from 3 nights at Kaka retreat and we will certainly be back for another visit. The units are very modern, spacious and absolutely spotless. I think what made the difference here were the thoughtful little extra touches, such as the rack of umbrellas by reception and the night light strips on the stairs to the unit. The small outdoor space at the front was a real bonus as a place to relax and read. As we booked directly we had a continental breakfast each morning, which was great to get us going for the day. The cheerful and welcoming hosts will pick you up and drop you off to ferry/flight. The units are fully serviced, although you can choose not to have a service if you wish, we chose not to as we had more than enough fresh towels, etc to keep us going. There was an outdoor BBQ to use, which again, was spotless. We didn't use it, but enjoyed chatting to our unit neighbours as they cooked their dinner. There is everything you need for self-catering, but we were happy to take the 4 min walk to the pub for dinner. The location is fabulous and super quiet. The real treat was being visited by the Kaka in the evening, they are not shy and come up close! I have stayed at a lot of motels across NZ and this is absolutely one of the best - I could have stayed here happily for a couple of weeks.…
We stayed four nights at the Kaka Retreat. We were a bit worried as we had a studio unit for my teenage son, my partner and myself. We needn't have been, while cozy we had plenty of room and the verandah meant we could spread out a little. The accommodation we clean, well presented and supported by on site staff. Because we booked direct we received a complimentary basic breakfast which was very useful to help us keep costs down and fill us up in the morning. The location is great, just up the hill from the settlement, an easyish walk (a little harder on the way home up hill). They picked and dropped us from the ferry which made organizing travel on the island that much easier as we had no car. If you get a chance stay - and look out for the friendly Kaka who visits often.
