Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

From the time you arrive to leave you are made so welcome and treated like friends. Nothing is too much trouble, picking you up on arrival on Stewart Island, taking you to and from Golden Bay to meet ferries to outer islands. The accommodation is very comfortable and the meals are outstanding! It's just a short walk to Oban main town and lots of beach nd bush walks. Deanne and Chris were so welcoming.

Amazing location, property, rooms and views. Food matches the same amazing. Short walk up the hill (4 minutes) from ferry, but Chris will be picking you up anyways. Great owners: Chris and Deann. Professional but comfortable to be around and easy conversation. Excellent beds and linens, very fast Wi-Fi. Turn down service with quality chocolates that’s matched by the daily pastry snacks in room. The three en-suite guest rooms are stand alone from each other and separate from main house. So they have nice privacy as well as harbor views. I’ll talk about dining but will also post on the restaurant listing. Fantastic food…breakfast and dinner. Deann is trained as a chef and it shows. Eclectic range of choices for each meal. I tried something different each evening

Outstanding service and cuisine at this delightful boutique hotel and restaurant hosted by Dee and Chris Sara on a magnificent site overlooking Half Moon Bay on Stewart Island, NZ. We stayed five nights and dined at the restaurant every night with an excellent choice of local seafood and fresh ingredients. Dee and Chris were very accomodating arranging for an early dinner so we could go ‘ Kiwi’ spotting at dusk at the airport where they forage on the verge. We were lucky to see two of these illusive creatures under a full moon including a juvenile! We were intrigued with the history of the house in a prime location on the island which had been in the same family for many generations since the early 1900’s before Dee purchased it. I spent some time sketching the beautiful home including the adorable 5 month old Cavoodle ‘ Alfie’ who makes a fine ambassador for tourism greeting every guest enthusiastically! The house has a beautiful collection of Dee’s photography featuring birds of Stewart Island. It is centrally located for easy access to the village of Oban where we hired electric bikes which gave us good access to interesting points on the island such as Acker’s Point and Acker’s stone house one of the oldest houses in NZ built in 1821. We also rode round to Horseshoe Bay which was very enjoyable and walked along the coastline to the native gardens with the help from Chris with a lift. He also provided delicious homemade hotcross buns for our journey! The hotel is also in fairly close proximity to the Ulva Island ferry which is a must for seeing the rich birdlife of the area. A tour includes a cruise around the island which includes sealions, lots of albatross, shags and penguins. Chris was very helpful delivering and picking us up from this tour.

Excellent Boutique B&B. Chris and Deanne were wonderful hosts. Chris provided a taxi service, picking us up from, and taking us back to, the ferry terminal and also taking us to the other side of the island for our trip to Ulva Island. Deanne does all the cooking and the meals were wonderful, all made with the freshest of ingredients all sourced locally. Our cabin was beautifully clean and quite spacious, very comfortable. There was a hot tub on our patio but it seemed to not be in use. Highly recommended.

The cabin accomodation is very comfortable & spacious. Excellent beds & bathroom with lovely toiletries. Left in our room was fresh fruit & homemade biscuits & cakes, also chocolates daily. The owners Deanne & Chris definitely make this place, they are both very helpful & friendly. Chris drove us around the island which was very kind & we learnt a lot. The most amazing part of our trip was Deanne’s culinary skills, she is an amazing self taught cook. The meals were definitely made from fresh ingredients some from their garden all very tasty.

From the moment Chris collected us from the Ferry (completely unexpected) to the moment we left 48 hours later, Stewart Island is one of the main highlights from our trip to NZ. Our accommodation was spacious with a lovely view overlooking the sea. Our room had all the little touches you would want and the Shower was very good. Dee was the most amazing Chef and both of our Breakfasts and Evening Meals were absolutely delicious. Chris took us on a tour around (where roads permit) and gave us an informative time with outstanding views. They also introduced us to our new favourite game, Five Crowns and yes Dee we managed to buy one in Dunedin !!!!!

This was a charming place to stay. It is a very small hotel and attention is given to every detail. We are particularly grateful to Chris for driving us to a couple of trailheads and even hiking with us. Above and beyond.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here - a lovely chalet (Kamahi) with a view over the bay (through the dense bush foliage by the balcony). Chris and Deanne are wonderful hosts - Chris took us on a guided tour of Stewart Island's 20k of paved roads - which was a wonderful way to get our bearings. He could not have been more helpful running us around as needs over our 2-night stay. Deanne is a great chef - from the delicious cake/biscuits in our room to the magnificent 3-course dinners freshly prepared in the evening. Deanne is an accomplished artist too, with much of her work on view.

The setting is incredible if you love the natural world. The room was terrific with lots of great small touches like baked sweets in the room and chocolate after dinner. The food is wonderful, locally sourced and beautifully presented. The host break their backs to ensure you have a great time. We are from the US but this place is another reason to go back to NZ
