Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stayed four nights with wonderful hosts Simone and Gavin. The ‘connected’ studio apartment is the only accomodation they offer so you have a unique experience - as separate or interactive as you wish. Self contained with bedroom, classy bathroom and a small but quite adequate separate lounge/ dining area. Their house is quite stylishly furnished and decorated too.
Amazing vista of the surrounding countryside, mountains and down to the lake. Set up high on hillside, with alpine feel and birds chirping. We enjoyed the little afternoon tea ‘treats’ while soaking up the afternoon sun from the private balcony deck. You get the sun warming you right up until sunset.
An easy 10 min drive from the hustle and bustle of Queenstown, and easy to do our day trips to Central Otago, Wanaka and Arrowtown.

The Alpine Retreat is a stunning property, with gracious, old-world style hospitality from Simone and Gavin. They offer a truly unique experience, including many thoughtful touches, and excellent recommendations for all sorts of activities you can enjoy in the region. Their delicious and generous breakfast spreads set you up for a day of exploring the region, or relaxing with a book while enjoying all the property has to offer.
While only 10 minutes from Queenstown, The Alpine Retreat feels beautifully secluded and peaceful, nestled on a hillside surrounded by the attractive gardens full of very active birdlife.
It's impossible to overstate just how highly we recommend The Alpine Retreat as a place to stay, and Simone and Gavin as hosts. We can't wait to go back!

We recently spent two nights at Alpine Retreat. The owners, Gavin and Simone, are genuinely lovely kiwis and went above and beyond in every respect (from unexpected treats to local recommendations to everything else). We liked it so much that we ended up extending our stay. We have been traveling around NZ for almost three months and this was our favorite B&B by a long way. The property is very quiet and peaceful with beautiful views out over the mountains and lake. The room is spacious and has its own kitchenette, living room and deck. But you have access to the owner's main home including a jacuzzi, sauna, large deck and lovely cats. We highly recommend the Alpine Retreat, the level of service has been unsurpassed during our New Zealand travels. Thanks Gavin and Simone!

The views, the hosts, the room, the town, the breakfasts, the baked treats... I honestly cannot put into words how amazing our stay was at the Alpine Retreat... Nothing was too much trouble and Simone and Gavin could not have been friendlier. I plan on visiting them again soon.

Stayed three nights at Simone and Gavin's The Alpine Retreat. Both of them were super nice, and very considerate. Place is beyond imagination with outside view to beat any imagination. Clear hills and lake Wakatipu view. Both of them have excellent knowledge about local things to do, and places to avoid. Gavin had first hand knowledge of street parking and Simone knew exactly how to get out broken hot pot replaced. They even had suggestions for alternative activities for last minute cancellation of our previously scheduled plans. Even when we had to leave before 6 AM and we asked them not to bother for snacks or breakfast, they prepared packed lunch which we loved so much that we let go our pre paid lunch. Simone actually took care of laundry! Superb and hats off to our travel agent for finding us a place like this.

Hi Doug - The road from Moke Lake into Alpine Retreat Road (A private road) is fine, Alpine Retreat is a switch back road, and sealed. We do get snow up here (600m) so if you are thinking of staying you need to be confident driving on ice and in Snow. If you are coming to ski bear in mind we are 10 mins into town and there is no public transport so you really need your own vehicle.
