Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Its located at Sunshine Bay and its approx 5 minute drive from the town. Excellent food and quiet surroundings with beautiful views makes it a better palce to stay. Bedrooms are spacious and well maintained. They provide complimentary milk and tea. Very friendly people!

I stayed 3 nights at the Blue Gum Lodge. I was made very welcome, given cups of tea and glasses of wine and invited to sit with the family and join in the conversation. I was the only guest, so the shared bathroom didn't worry me. It's not 5-star accommodation, but the price reflects that. Ian and Diane and their family run a business ferrying walkers to and from the various tramping trails in the area, so were full of advice and information about the region. The view from the house is fantastic, being in Sunshine Bay, outside Queenstown, and it is away from the road, so it's very quiet - unless you count the birdsong!

The hosts were nice people but seemed a bit busy with their other business interests of driving tourists around. The room we had did not have tea or coffee making facilities or TV and was downstairs, under the house with two other bedrooms and a shared bathroom. Like other reviews we found the smell and lack of cleaning off putting and the bathroom did not seem to have been cleaned from previous guests. The hosts did make us feel at home but we would not return to this B&B.

Although the hosts were very friendly, and the price cheap, the rooms were simply not clean enough. The carpets could do with a proper clean or even, better, replacement. We felt bombarded by dust and old smells, and left after our first night. Basic is fine. Unclean is not.

We stayed for 3 nights at Diane and Ian's place. The location was excellent, overlooking the lake and the place was quite beautiful. The room is small but cosy. Diane and Ian are excellent hosts and very good company. Ian was a good guide on what to see and the smart way to do it too! We enjoyed our trip to several nice spots in and around Queenstown with their help. Both of them were very accomodating too. Definitely worth a stay. Rajesh & Manjari

We came across Blue gum lodge through a fellow traveller's recommendation and we didn't regret our choice to stay there. It's a little out from the main township, though only a 15-20min walk around the lake. This was perfect for us. Avoiding hoards of backpackers, waking up to bird song and breakfast overlooking stunning lake views was our idea of a great getaway. We found the accommodation most comfortable and hosts to be very welcoming. They had a sound knowledge of the local area and helped organise our activities with aplomb. They were also kind enough to drop us off at the airport at the end of our stay. We fully recommend this B&B, and will pay Blue gum lodge another visit should we be back in Queenstown.

My husband and I always stay at B&B's or Boutique hotels when we travel. In order to pick the places we will stay we rely on the pictures and descriptions on the internet. Lucky for us in our many years of traveling, we have always been happy with our picks because they have resembled what we saw on the internet.....until now. Although the pictures on the internet only show the inside looking out over they lake, you're in for a big surprise when you see the outside of the house. When we drove up, we saw the sign, but trying to figure out which house on the small gravel road was 252 Fernhill was a challenge. We finally had to call the phone number for the owner to come out of her garage to greet us. The outside of the house and the mishung curtains on the patio door convinced us that we didn't need to see the room. The ironic thing was that this was the most expensive B&B (195NZ) we had chosen on our 2 week trip and it was by far the most disappointing. We told the owner we could not stay. She said she would not charge us, but a charge showed up on my cc. I can't say I was surprised. Do yourself a favor and find another place in Queenstown, we did.
