Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The reflections on the lake in good weather are absolutely stunning.
The downside is the very narrow gravel road in - be prepared to reverse back for oncoming traffic and dont drive this road unless you are competent and confident reversing your vehicle. Driving out is much easier as you have better visibility of the road ahead.

There are plenty of camping sites, but the ground is mostly unlevel, so flat sites are fairly rare.
We were in our camper and used wheel wedges so were fine.

The thing that really annoyed me is the couple that arrived very late at night and parked right next to us (there were about another 47 sites free). They then proceeded to run their vehicle with their front vehicle lights beaming on. In the end we had to ask them to turn the vehicle off at 10.30pm. They said they were charging something. No cell or internet so phones are pretty useless. Camp etiquette seems to be missing and as this camp is only 13km from Queenstown it does seem to attract those hoping to get a free nights accm - but be warned. The DOC officer was up checking before light and our neighbours got a rude wakening because they hadnt paid. So check in and pay up or you may be woken well before 7am!! Or late at night.
So enjoy this stunning lake - great sunset, sunrise, hike around lake, paddling, swimming and camping.
The toilet facilties were really clean.

This is a beautiful place to camp and stay the night. There are amazing sunrises here and super pretty landscape. You have to drive through some cow pastures, on a road, to get there but it is totally worth it. If the animals are on the road just keep moving slowly and they eventually move. The owners are super friendly and it is low cost. Best place to stay near Queenstown. We loved it so much we stayed here for 6 nights.

What a gorgeous remote campsite, framed by the lake and the mountains, and with a stable with handsome horses just next door.
The pros: location! Yes, you can get away from the crowds while still only being 15 mins. From Queenstown. Clean bathrooms, and a good "kitchen" facility for a DOC site.
The cons: Long drop toilets with no lighting, and no showers or internet, as you may expect from a DOC campsite.
We paid $26 for two people on an unpowered campervan site.

A true DOC campground: beaufitul scenery, no amenities. But the water in the lake is clean and not that cold, so you can freshen up in the morning by taking a dip in the lake! Charge is NZD 10 per adult. There is also a horse riding company next to the camping where you can book tours.

Utterly wonderful Dept of Conservation camp site location with pitches right next to the lake and with outstanding views across the lake to mountains beyond to wake up to.The scenery is utterly stunning and to have that along with complete quiet is just divine.
Long gravel road to get to the site but well maintained and an easy drive.
Facilities very basic but don’t be put off. Well worth visiting.

The campsite is remote. Self Contained vehicle prefered if you are staying the night. The lake is very quiet at night. The drive in on the gravel path is not exactly smooth but nothing our 6 berth camper can't handle.

We camped here two nights. The camp warden is a nice guy. We pitched our tent then informed him we were heading off into town to get food and sightsee then would return and pay him. He had no concerns about us not paying right away as we had no cash on us.
Toilets were always clean as was the area to wash dishes.
Would recommend going there in a campervan with your own stove etc as there is nowhere to cook.
The road there is a bit tricky. 7km of road which is all stones. Just take it slowly and you will get there.
Three times we were met by a jeep afrom the nearby horse trekking site. They kept driving up behind us even though we were unsure of the road and couldnt go any faster incase we damaged our car.
The surrounding area is beautiful. Very nice scenery. You can also fish here which my partner did. Although we caught nothing.
Overall, out of the way and nice scenery. But it just wasn't for me.

We been told that this campsite is quite far where u have to drive through 6km dirt road passes the ungated private farm. the campsite have 2 basic toilets only. make sure you have done the dumping for your campervan before reach this campsite.

this campsite is very windy and we are unable to switch on the heater since theres no power point. However this campsite we could say the most beautiful campsite u could have in south island. The scenery is amazing with mountains and rainbows. its really worth to be here..

Perfect little DOC site right next to the lake, kitchen facilities are just a stainless steel bench/sink in a covered shelter, its all you really need and very functional. Toilets are very clean longdrops in concrete & stainless steel, disabled friendly BUT try getting a wheel chair up to the concrete floor from the grass.
