Nestled in the heart of Queenstown, Sofitel Queenstown Hotel and Spa is lauded for its cozy charm and luxurious rooms featuring comforts like heated floors. Guests are consistently impressed with the dedicated and friendly staff, ensuring a welcoming stay. The hotel's central location earns unanimous praise for its convenience to nearby attractions. While the amenities, including a sumptuous breakfast, mostly receive positive remarks, the value proposition seems to be a point of contention, with opinions divided on whether the cost reflects the experience. Cleanliness is another high point, although isolated comments suggest there's room for improvement.

This hotel is in an incredibly convenient location right in the hustle and bustle of Queenstown; great for catching the snow buses or Skyline Gondola, visiting the Kiwi Park, or doing any other activity in town.

The staff are extremely friendly and personable. I can't remember the last time I stayed in a big brand hotel and had so many staff not just make eye contact, but initiate conversations and remember me from the previous day. Along with the location, the staff are this hotel's greatest asset.

Unfortunately, the rooms are quite tired, and our suite on the third floor had a few issues. Firstly, the air conditioning didn't work properly. The room was cold - around 16 degrees according to my phone. I told reception about this and the very helpful general manager reset something; soon afterwards, warm air started to blow out, but it didn't really heat the room more than a degree or so.

There were extra heaters in every part of the suite, which I assume means the hotel knows the aircon doesn't work properly. The heaters worked very well, but having to use extra heaters in a $1000/night suite felt a bit strange. Why not just have aircon that works? The heaters also made a lot of noise... So we could either be toasty warm (important during a Queenstown winter), or we could have a quiet environment.

I do expect both for that price and this standard of hotel.

The pre-dinner canapes and drinks in the bar were pretty good. The service was again, outstanding. We ordered some extra cocktails, which were excellent. Room service was also great, but it was a bit inconvenient to have nothing available before 4:45 pm - not even an all-day menu!

We also heard a lot of noise from the rooms above us. It sounded like chairs and tables were being moved across the celing, and it happened quite frequently. These noises, combined with the heating issues, made me feel like I was in a far cheaper hotel.

Another little quirk was the tap in the bathroom sink. Rather than being a simple mixer tap, it was a 360 degree joystick type tap. Meaning you had to get it to the right position, left or right, up and down, in order for hot water to come out at the right speed. It took me a long time to work out what the right position was, resulting in loads of spilled water that gushed out of the tap and all over the vanity.

Our room wasn't serviced until 5pm on our second day, just as we were getting home and needing to start getting our youngest kid to bed. Again, not ideal.

Not sure I'd stay here again for the price.

We enjoyed staying at this hotel so much because the staff are so friendly and helpful. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome and attend to your every need.

I loved it so much that I would love to live there when I retire! The staff who work in The Left Bank, Le Salon Rouge, reception and concierge service were amazing! They really make the atmosphere of the place. We have stayed at a number of Sofitel hotels and this by far is the best!

Rooms were very clean and comfortable as was the bed.

We ate breakfast at the Left Bank which has a great range of buffet food as well as a wide selection on the a la carte menu. Each morning we were greeted by the friendly staff who remembered our names and preferences. It was like coming down to breakfast with family. We felt very welcome.

If you book a suite at the hotel, of an afternoon you can enjoy drinks and a small selection of canapes from Le Club Lounge Apero Chic menu in Le Salon Rouge between 1700-1900. This was included in our package as we booked a suite and it is also available to Platinum or Diamond Accor Plus members.

The hotel is centrally located and the valet service is great. It would take only minutes for the concierge to bring out our car. It was reasonably priced at $50 per day, however, we were charged only $30 per day as a room upgrade was not available to us. (This is also part of Accor Plus Platinum membership.)

I highly recommend this hotel. It really is the best!

As an AccorPlus and Accor Platinum member it was wonderful to be contacted by Harriet who did her best to upgrade our rooms for our stay. We were upgraded to a suite for some of our stay and they are massive with a large bedroom and separate lounge area including dining room table for 6. The suite interconnects with a room with 2 double beds and this room is large too. The rooms are not modern and a bit too dark for me but they are clean.
Accor platinum members get complimentary full buffet breakfast as well as ability to order more hot dishes a la carte. Comp Barista coffee too. The breakfast ladies are lovely, I always got a smile from the Asian waitresses and I did appreciate my chats with the lovely lady from Mauritius.
The lounge is small and only seats 16 people though on busier nights they let people sit in the adjacent restaurant. There is no hot food. Self service. Compared to other hotel lounges this one does not stand out.
Nick from the front desk and the guy who helped us with our luggage were continual friendly faces throughout our stay. In general we were impressed with the staff here.
The location is excellent. Up the hill is the gondola and the luge. Across the road is Fergburger. There is an excellent Italian restaurant called Bella Cucina almost at the doorstep of the hotel. 1789 the in house restaurant is only open Friday and Saturday for dinner with 50% Accor plus dining discount but given the central location of this hotel there are plenty of outside eating options.
Valet parking is expensive at $50 per day. There is no on site car park.
In summary, we enjoyed our stay. We felt this hotel really tried to welcome Accor guests. Well done to the staff here for making us feel welcome.

It saddens me to have to write this as we have visited this hotel a few times now. However, there are simply no words to describe the unhygienic practices in their breakfast restaurant Leftbank. The restaurant had mostly uncleared and dirty tables when we arrived so there were many to be cleaned up. I witnessed a female server take a soiled napkin off one table, dip it in the used water glass off the same table and then proceed to wipe down the neighbouring soiled table with it. In the span of 20 minutes she cleared three tables in the same manor, all with soiled napkins from other tables including a baby high chair that needed a good clean down. In all our travels I have never seen such disgusting practices. No clean cloth, no sanitisation, just wiping various germs onto a table via a used napkin and resetting it for someone else to eat their breakfast at. Told the duty manager of hotel, he didn’t seem too phased. He could have handled this more appropriately. It’s a Sofitel - I expect better, better training and not to eat off a table full of pathogens from another guest. Ever wonder why you get sick eating out?! Will never stay here again - management is obviously not interested if they allow such poorly trained staff and at NZD $700 a night they should care more. Queenstown is a tourist town, but this is no excuse to have so much disregard for your standards. So disappointed as Accor platinum and diamond members.

Bonjour gourmetbec, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We sincerely apologize for the deeply disappointing experience you encountered during your visit to Leftbank. The incident you described does not reflect the high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and service we strive to maintain at our hotel. We are incredibly disheartened to hear about the unhygienic practices you observed and the lack of urgency you felt from our team in addressing your concerns. Immediate steps are being taken to retrain our staff, reinforce proper hygiene protocols, and enhance supervision in our dining areas. Stayed 3 nights in the ‘Prestige Suite’ with ‘Remarkables View’, at an average cost of NZ$812 per night.

Let me start with the positives – the hotel is in a good location right in downtown Queenstown. It was very easy to get to all the sights. The room was clean and a good size (noting it was a suite), with good bathroom. Staff always were friendly.

The Ok stuff – the hotel’s décor was dated, including in the rooms. The bedroom lighting was extremely dim, and although there were sufficient power points they were hidden away behind bedside tables. There was a ‘boil water’ notice for drinking water in Queenstown, and while the hotel provided boiled water in bottles, more bottles would have been helpful without have to require them from reception.

The bad – the suite assigned, room 412, was essentially at street level, with people constantly walking past the windows meaning there was zero privacy if you left curtains open. There were garbage bins directly under of one of the windows. The ‘Remarkables View’ advertised was not easily glimpsed from the main windows, instead could be seen from the corridor side of the suite and were mostly hidden by buildings opposite. Tried to book laundry service on Friday for delivery Saturday night, but was told that due to a public holiday on Monday no laundry was available until Tuesday; which surely isn’t acceptable for a 5 star property. The laundromat elsewhere in Queenstown managed to be open, which is where I ended up spending my Saturday morning.

The verdict: This hotel is not up to a 5-star standard. The Prestige Suite assigned while well sized, is very poorly located within the hotel, and the supposed view that it is sold with – one of the reasons I chose the room – was essentially non-existent, while other windows/juliet balconies unusable due to being directly on street level.

Ultimately I was left very disappointed with the hotel considering the cost.

Bonjour Mr Fattal. Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback about your recent stay with us here on Trip Advisor and on Google. We truly appreciate your review as it helps us identify areas where we can improve our services and facilities. We are pleased to hear that you found the hotel's location convenient and our staff friendly. However, we deeply regret that your experience did not meet your expectations, particularly in relation to your stay in a suite. I would like to note that I do not see any record of feedback during your stay that could of rectified some of you issues you have raised. We'd like to address your points: Positives: * We're glad you found the hotel's location ideal for exploring Queenstown. * Your appreciation of the room's cleanliness, size, and the bathroom is noted. Areas for Improvement: * We appreciate your comments on the decor and lighting, and we will certainly consider these aspects in our ongoing efforts to enhance the guest experience. * We apologise for the inconvenience regarding the 'boil water' notice and will work on improving communication and provision of essential resources. * Your feedback on the suite's location and the view is valuable to us. We will reevaluate our room description. * We're sorry to hear about the laundry service issue, unfortunately our laundry service is the sole laundry operator in our rural town and is a third party provider and we are bound to their times of operation. Your feedback is essential in helping us improve, and we are genuinely sorry to have left you disappointed, especially considering the cost of your stay. We will use your comments constructively to make necessary enhancements, and we hope that you would consider giving us another chance in the future. If you choose to return, please feel free to contact myself directly on any hotel channel / email or phone and we will ensure that your next experience is more in line with your expectations. Thank you for providing your insights, and we look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back. Warm regards, Philip Riley Operations Manager

Highlights
+The location is ideal for central Queenstown and within walking distance to everything food, shops and attractions. Definitely ideal for wanting to see what Queenstown has to offer.
+ The bathroom was neat and the spa bath was perfect after a long day of exploring
+ The Gym was stocked with essentials but we had issues with it being locked/key not working

Area for improvement
- The toilet has low pressure to flush which seems strange
- Our wifi password didn't work after multiple attempts and troubleshooting with reception. We were unable to screen share to the TV which also seems outdated.
- The balcony view was of the stairs (many people walking up and down the ramp) and when the lights were on in our room, people could see into our room. Housekeeping opened the curtains with the lights on after we closed it for comfort. It felt like a fish bowl so we felt more comfortable with the curtains closed.
- Proper instructions for the air conditioning unit as it's not straightforward

For the price of two nights, we felt a few more thoughtful details would have helped to improve our experience.

We stayed here in early December and from the time we arrived and until we left it was wonderful, booked a prestige suite due to a special occasion and it was huge, quiet and the bed super comfortable and room was serviced promptly every day.
The General Manager Jeremy contacted us several days prior to our arrival to let us know that night roadworks were being undertaken between 7 PM and 6 AM for the duration of our stay and offered alternative accommodation at other Accor properties but said our room should be quiet and we heard nothing.
While the bar and restaurants were closed due to a lack of staff like every other cafe, pub or restaurant in the town the Executive Lounge was great.
Summalee who works in both the breakfast area and Executive Lounge was a wonderful staff member who made our stay even better.
Emma from reception helped us out with dining suggestions and sorted out a mistake on our bill promptly and kept me notified about its progress.
My wife and I are looking forward to returning around the same time next year for another wonderful stay.

From check in to check out, this was a beautiful stay. After a tiring drive back from Christchurch, both Mario at Concierge and the lovely gentleman at Check in made me and my sister feel welcome.

The hotel felt and smelt luxurious with that signature "Sofitel scent". Despite not dining at the many eateries at the hotel, they looked well presented. Maybe next visit I will try them! Our room was magnifique and the beds were like sleeping on a cloud, same with the pillows!

Location wise, you are right across from the iconic Fergburger and near the Skyline Gondola and coach pickups. I would strongly recommend to anyone to stay at this property. The nightly rate may be one of the highest in Queenstown, but is worth it!

Truly amazing staff that go above and beyond to make our stay seamless, comfortable and relaxing. From the GM JEREMY to the kind people that kept our room clean and sanitised one could not ask for anything more. The people that work at the Sofitel do so because they want to provide you with an exceptional holiday experience and they did this over 11 days for me and my family. Given shortages of staff due to COVID most staff including the GM were working double shifts yet not once did they not greet us with a genuine smile. They made time to ask about our day and listened to us ramble on how fantastic our trip was, they did this with sincere interest even though they would have been exhausted. Great team led by a great leader (Jeremy), thank you Sofitel for procuring such sensational staff!

Overall, a nice and comfortable hotel to stay at, in a nice location in QT city.

However, experience was somewhat soured at checkout. Upon checkin I was informed that I was eligible to a 20% discount on spa treatments over 1 hour long with my Accor plus membership. Hence, booked a 3 hr package, only to find out at checkout that packages were suddenly not included in this deal - maybe this could be better communicated by staff.

Hi! Just wanting to confirm if the gym and sauna are In working order?
Answer from Jeremy_Samuels
Queenstown, New Zealand22 contributions2 helpful votes
Bonjour NicBris76, Our normal gym is indeed currently under refurbishment, however we have relocated all of our equipment to a temporary space on level 2 of the hotel. Whilst we do not have a sauna on property, we do have a Turkish Hammam (steam bath) that is complimentary for all of our guests to use exclusively for 30 minutes in So Spa. This is not effected by the refurbishments to the gym. We hope to see you here at Sofitel Queenstown Hotel & Spa soon!

Bonjour Sunniva H, It is possible to request a roll-away bed, that will fit in a superior room. It is complementary for a child staying with parents (under 12 years old). Otherwise the extra charge for a superior room is $95 per night. I would recommend to let us know in advance, via our reservation, to place it directly into your room prior to arrival. In your case it will be free of charge (5 years old), Kind regards, Josef Caron, Guest Relations Executive
