Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My partner and I stayed here for a night in our van, we used the amenities which included only one long drop and it smelt like the inside of an Elephants never regions. It would be fine if your self contained but we felt it should have been worth only $5. Despite this the site keeper was a nice dude but would not stay here again.

Our first night in Queenstown and this just seemed like the easiest camp to start with. We were in a self contained van and had no issues. Didn’t use any amenities so not sure what that was like. It cost $26 for two adults and the really nice guy came around to collect. Was pretty amazing for our first night. Really quite and lots of privacy.

To start I need to say we don't really do a lot of camping in tents. We were in Queenstown for 2 days / 1 night in the middle of February and we could not find a hotel - anywhere. I'm believe it was Chinese Spring Break or similar. We purchased required tent, sleepy Ng bags and inflatable mattress from the warehouse. So we came prepared. The actual camp ground was very 'rocky' and not easy to get tent pegs into. There seemed to be a lot of campers there that did leave before 7.00am. There seemed to be a lot of campers that did not use the toilet in the night, but I suspect used any nearby bushes. The scenery / outlook and location was SPECTACULAR but this place is let down by the lack of toilet facilities. I started to suspect that a number of workers in town were based here in the evening due to general accommodation shortages in the district. There was a shower and the toilets were composting. The fees were very reasonable at $13 adult and $6 child per night, but there seemed to be a lot of people left before the DoC staff did their checking in the morning regarding fees. I would recommend, but not perhaps in a tent, as there seemed to be the smell of waste basically under the tent.

While we didn't stay there, we enjoyed the scenery and the lake front. (LOTR filming location) There's free parking and you can explore the lake shore, wait for the Seiche or just flip stones. or just sit by the lake for a quiet time and enjoy the scenery. Easy to stop on your way to Glenorchy.

We didn't stay at the campsite, but stopped here about 30 minutes to check out the scenery and toilets. It is a quiet spot away from the main road to Glenorchy. Wheelchair accessible toilets. Free parking for visitors right by the lake. Feel free to get out and walk along the lake side and enjoy the scenery, stretch the legs and all that.

As part of our Lord of the Rings tour we took, we visited this campground. The campsites seems pretty primitive but well maintained. We viewed locations within the campground where they filmed scenes from Lord of the Rings first movie.

Located about 10 minutes' drive from Queenstown centre in a stunning setting by the lake, surrounded by mountains. A tent pitch cost 13 NZD per person per night, which is cheap by Queenstown standards. Facilities are basic- although expected at a DOC site, we felt that 3 toilets and a portaloo on a very busy site wasn't really sufficient. We were also under the impression from the DOC camping guidebook that there was a solar shower, though from reading an earlier review it's a space for personal solar showers. Might be our misunderstanding as I don't have the leaflet to hand, but if not this might be worth clarifying.

We arrived while it was dark. As I emerged from the RV to deposit our fee, I could hear rushing water. I was excited to discover where we were as soon as the sun rose. The site was absolutely beautiful. It was peaceful and serene and while I was out watching the stars, I saw two shooting starts. This spot was pretty close to Queenstown, but still remote and quiet. Great rates!

A very reliable DOC site and great for campervans. The amenities are very basic but, considering it's so close to Queenstown, it is a geat place to stay and enjoy the views of the lake and mountains. It is a large camp ground and during the winter when we stayed there was not many people and it was very quiet. It's funny because Queenstown was so crowded for the ski season. You can also find many great walks not far from here and still be close to Queenstown for some city experiences. I recommend Mt. Alfred near Glenorchy to walk.

This campsite is convenient in that it's only 12 klicks down the road. The drive to town only took about 15 min. There many sites. Obviously you chose which are not taken. It's right on the the edge of a lake. So you can walk from your campsite to the banks and enjoy the subtle waves and getting your feet wet. Bathrooms are available. Water sink outside. The camp host is friendly. He's only visible at the entrance which is approached by going down a small gravel stretch from the main road. Not much else to add. Would we come here again? for sure.
