Detailed Reviews
This is the only DOC site in New Zealand manged by a couple, who live on site in a bus. It is charged at the basic $6 doc site fee and is well worth it. It has better toilets than most $6 DOC sites and the couple who mange it keep the site maintained to a high standard, they have even recently planted a lot of new baby trees. They are also there to help with any questions and problems and can even book activities in QT for you.
One word of warning, as with a lot of DOC sites you need to take plenty of mosquito spray ;-)

We arrived while it was dark. As I emerged from the RV to deposit our fee, I could hear rushing water. I was excited to discover where we were as soon as the sun rose. The site was absolutely beautiful. It was peaceful and serene and while I was out watching the stars, I saw two shooting starts. This spot was pretty close to Queenstown, but still remote and quiet. Great rates!

We stayed here (4 of us, 2 in tent, 2 in van), for 4 nights. Which we got a discount for :)
Super site! Outside of Queenstown, which was a relief-come here to get away from the tourists and expensive attractions.
A few toilet blocks (long drop), and one stand alone gravity toilet at the back of the site (not particularly clean and pleasant- but when are they! When nature calls they provide what you need!)
Right on the shore of Lake Wakatipu, which was a real treat for a refreshing swim and cool off on the hot days!
A little tip, we camped right at the back of the site, near the entrance to Bob's Cove walk, we were away from everybody else on the site, and had the BEST view of the Remarkables and the Lake, superb sunrises and sunsets :)
It's close enough to Queenstown to access everything, about 12 km outside, and also access to quite a few lovely day walks, both short and longer in length.
We really enjoyed the peace and beauty of this DOC site, and would love to visit again in the future :)
Thank you to the lovely family running it whilst we were there :)
I'd recommend this for singles, couples, groups and families!

Don't bother going.
This use to be under Doc pass but no longer so was worth going but no longer.
Save yourself its not worth $15 neither is moke lake under same company/owners now.
Both have steep roads which joins to a poorly maintained dirt roads if it rains your campsite will most likely flood. Due to rabbits they are covered in poo so your tent bottom is gonna get covered.
Otherwise they are all slightly sloped in some way hard to get flat.
Basic drop toilets depending on the day they can smell pretty bad but are cleaned.
No fresh water, no electrical for $15 its not worth it.
There are some locals that live there and quite often they blair music or drive in late with obnoxiously loud car a couple dogs have roamed freely quite often as well.
Wasn't that big of deal when it was foc but not $15

We stayed during some very crazy wind but really enjoyed our stay here nonetheless! Had fun exploring some of the tracks near the campgrounds & sitting by the lake in the evening & relaxing. Facilities were clean, campground manager was friendly & we would stay again!

This DOC camp ground is not like others, it is close to Queenstown (not walking distance) and provides a wide variety of sites for freedom campers. It costs a wee bit more than a regular DOC campsite but is a cheap option for Queenstown accommodation. Would work best if you have a fully self contained set up as there aren't many toilets. There are a few water taps around. Depending on your site will depend on your view of Lake Wakatipu. Have a good drive around before making your decision to set up. Great for groups and families. Extremely busy at New Years so got a few days prior. it is a dog friendly camp ground.

i gave been there two times, the first time was in March 2014, it was so amazing, good price and good accomodation. The second time was in October 2014 and the price was upper than the first time, the toilets was dirty. The own things very nice was the wood's table, and the area to stay is so amazing with a beautiful point of view on the lake Wakatipu.

Response from Twelvemiledelta, Manager at 12 Mile Delta Campground
Responded 10 Jan 2015
We are sorry to hear that your experience was not as good as the first time. We have a new team of helpers who now clean the facilities morning and evening leaving them spotless. We also have an ongoing project to add several more of the picnic tables that you liked. We hope your next visit is a pleasant one!

We stayed at 12 mile delta campground for one night the week prior to Easter. About 50% of the campground was full. I would imagine this place would be very crowded at peak times. The best part about the campground is the proximity to the lake and walking trails. While sites are not directly on the lake it is only a 50-100m walk to reach the shore. Surrounded by mountains it is a lovely place to wake up. Only a few sites are sheltered so if you are after privacy and seclusion this is not the campsite for you. Despite the lack of privacy I still preferred to stay here over a campground in Queenstown purely for the location. Amenities are what you would expect for a DOC campsite. Toilets were clean and well maintained. Fees were $6 per person. There are no powered sites or showers. Tents and motor homes are welcome. There are some lovely walking trails by the lake if you are up for a walk/hike. I would definately stay here again.

It is tough to find a freedom camping spot anywhere close to Queenstown, and the prices within the city and extraordinarily high. This camp site, is easily the best kept secret, as being under 15 minutes outside of town, you are at the foot of the lake with the majestic Alps towering over head. At a meagre 6 bucks per person, it is amazing that this place isnt full of people.
The toilet facilities are surprisingly new and excellent.
Definitely the place to camp while in Qtown

Hats off to DOC for providing yet another well maintained freedom camping site in a spectacular setting.
A two minute walk and you're on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by mountains, with beautiful tasting drinking water on tap and near new toilet facilities (they even have nifty little solar powered lights inside for night time excursions). There's an abundance of decent sites for campervans and a separate camping area. The fees are very reasonable ($6/adult, $3/child) and the onsite manager provides a real sense of security. Amazes me you can park up so close to Queenstown for so little.
