We stayed 2 nights at The Black Sheep Hostel and everything was perfect. We paid $60 per night and had a double bed with plenty of room and airflow from windows. There was a large selection of DVDs at reception we could watch on our TV for free, and a free spa plus free bike hire. Staff were friendly. Only downside is that other guests were quite noisy during our stay so it had woken us up a few times during the night
We had a horrible experience this stay around. People were partying in the hostel until 5 am. The "live in staff" could not be reached and they did not intervened. We had to leave the hostel and go sleep in our campervan. The next morning no refund or replacement we're offered by the staff. Unfortunately I really do not recommend this place because of this experience. On top of this, the spa advertised was dirty and out of order, more of a hot bath without jets and the upstairs lady showers we're moldy and honestly disgusting. This place seriously need the attention of the local management instead of letting it run by young overseas travellers who doesn't seem to care.
If I travel a lot, I don't want to spend too much money on accommodation. I found the cheapest accommodation and this was the place. But it was so noisy that we couldn't sleep until 12 to 1 at night, and I had to wake up again at 3 to 4 a.m. with the loud voice of a drunkard. It was mainly the noise of running around and screaming in a very loud voice. The staff were kind, and the bathroom and room were clean. You can also watch DVDs. We left it on so that we could hear less outside noise before we went to bed. I thank the staff for their kindness.
I'll definitely stay here again. The staff were very helpful and there are free bikes to use which is fantastic as the property is right down the road from the lakefront bike path. Super close to town as well. We stayed in sunny a private room which was simple but just what we needed. Note that it can get a bit noisy at times especially on weekends but that's a symptom of the fact that it is a backpackers and the people staying there at the time so not a fault of the hostel itself.
Myself and a mate came to queenstown for Mardi Gras festival which was postponed due to Covid but we came anyway. We had a twin room at Black Sheep and I could not recommend this place highly enough! When we arrived we jumped straight in the spa with a few beers and were soon joined by a bunch of other hostel goers and had a massive Wednesday night. The staff were very accommodating and the facilities were all clean and tidy. Mardi Gras has been postponed by a couple of months but we will be back to stay here again for it!
