We recently completed a two-week luxury tour of North and South New Zealand. It was wondrous in every aspect. We stayed at the best lodges including Huka, Cape Kidnappers, Otahuna, Matakauri, and Eichardt’s private hotel. For the ultimate experience, book your trip through Marchay. Now for the review! Located in the heart of downtown Queenstown overlooking Lake Wakatipu, this is a must stay hotel if you are traveling to Queenstown. Built in 1891, very intimate with 5 guest rooms, penthouse suite and off-location cottage. We had room #1, a beautiful suite with balcony overlooking the lake and busy tourist area, this is the room to book.
The hotel features a nice bar however, as a hotel guest, you can enjoy complimentary canopies and drinks in the lodge room from 5:30-6:30 daily. And the room offers four whiskey’s 24/7 including Bowmore 12. Yum!
The restaurant is excellent and perhaps makes the best onion soup. Everything was delicious. There are 120 restaurants downtown, all within a few minutes as the downtown area is sweet and compact.
There is no gym but they provide access to the Queenstown gym five minutes away. There is a private treatment room, book in advance.
The location is the best and it will remind you of Nantucket with bustling bistros, tourist traps, ice cream stores, boating tours, and street magicians. So much fun.
Staff here is among the best and always ready for anything you want.
Overall: One of the best hotels we have stayed and you can’t beat the location and service.

The real question is why stay in Queenstown? But if you are and want to be in the middle of everything. Eichardt’s is a lovely spot with beautiful views of the lake.
We would have preferred to stay just outside of town at the Rosewood property and come in for a meal or to walk around.
That said—.
Pros—Small boutique hotel, only 12 rooms, tastefully decorated and very comfortable and spacious. Friendly and very accommodating staff.
Cons—drinks are served each night in the Parlor. I added a photo, dirty glasses were left overnight for over 12 hours, not what you would expect in a top rated luxury hotel.
Queenstown was experiencing a problem with drinking water during our stay. The hotel staff was not very clear at first, that it was not safe to drink the water; that should have been made more clear. And on the first night, the air conditioning for the entire hotel was out, with little notice or explanation to the guests. It miraculously worked on the second night. No gym or fitness center on site.
Noisy location, I felt were in Greenwich Village on a weekend night, so noisy you could not leave the windows open.
Breakfast was fine, but not particularly special.
We would not go back and would tell friends to consider other options.

Eichardt’s is a lovely hotel on the bustling Queenstown waterfront. I have to confess that having just stayed at three different secluded “luxury lodges,” it was at first a bit of a shock at first to stay at Eichardt’s simply because of the nature of Queenstown itself. (Very crowded in the summer, lots of people in the area in front of the hotel at all times.) But the hotel itself is wonderful. Beautiful rooms and well-insulated from the street scene it overlooks. Breakfasts in the Grille were great, with very friendly service from Hazel meriting special mention. Everyone at the front desk, starting with Damian, was friendly and helpful. Queenstown is a good location: while there we went on a helicopter ride to Milford Sound, we visited Arrowtown and took a hike along the river there, we did some wine tasting, we walked around the lake and in the nearby park, and we also did a great photography excursion one night into Skippers Canyon guided by Glen Howey. Eichardt’s is a great base for all of this. Just be prepared for a more urban feel if you’re coming from one or more bucolic country lodges.

We really enjoyed our three night stay, the hotel is perfectly located at the heart of Queenstown with stunning views of the waterfront and the breathtaking mountainous background.
The staff are great, they will go out of their way to help you, every person we met was very pleasant and professional and very eager for you to make use of everything Queenstown has to offer. Having a car was a breeze thanks to their efficient and complimentary valet service.
The spa was under renovation so unfortunately we couldn’t use it. We had breakfast included in our stay, this featured a hot menu and a selection of cold continental items. Breakfast was tasty and fresh and always arrived quickly. The hotel also offers complimentary drinks between 5.30pm and 6.30pm every night. We were slightly confused with the offering on our first night as we could only select one glass of wine, however this seemed to change on our final night where we could also choose from beers and cocktails (plus more than one glass was allowed this time!).
Would love to give the hotel 5 stars but we really did encounter a significant issue with noise at night. We had room 4 which was huge and well appointed but unfortunately it faced a roof top bar and a club. The roof top bar blasts music out until midnight (which isn’t an awful time) but the club blasts music until 2.30am. This makes the whole room shake and thump and you can’t get a peaceful night of sleep until the club shuts down. It really is a shame. We mentioned this to reception but apart from suggesting we call the night team, it felt like there was nothing more they could do. Therefore we strongly suggest that anyone avoids staying in room 4 or 5 if you want a good nights sleep ahead of a busy day exploring Queenstown.

Fabulous place to stay right in the heart of Queenstown. The room was very comfortable overlooking the lake and the log fire ( which was conveniently gas) was very much welcomed when coming in from the cold. Unfortunately that’s where the praise ends. The service was really really poor. And for $2000 per night, I simply wouldn’t return. When I ordered breakfast ( 2 serves of cereal, tea and toast) everything came up wrong. When I rang to get it corrected they got it wrong again. They provided toast but no knife. Then only one pot of tea. Then up came one slice of toast ( for 2 people!!) but no butter and on it went. 5 phone calls. Honestly I was embarrassed for the staff. The next day I went down and personally gave the order for breakfast to the staff, explaining the previous debacle. She assured me it would all be correct the following day. We had 3 bowls of cereal delivered for two people, again the wrong cereal and on it went. Seriously my 7 year old grand daughter could have got the order correctly. It was cereal and toast for 2! There were several other mix ups and mistakes. Like you’d come home freezing after being out all day and room service hadn’t bothered filling up the tea bags so there were none and again I had to ring down for service. It was cringe worthy. And not a hint of sorry or compensation. For $2000, save your money!! I stayed the following night at a cheap hotel up the west coast for $187/ night and the service was brilliant! I’d go back to that cheap place in a heartbeat. So if you are looking for service, avoid this hotel. It was a real disappointment. I blew $8000 and only have bad memories. It was meant to be a once in a lifetime treat. ☹️

This is a wonderful hotel in a beautiful historic building in the absolute best location in Queenstown. As appears to be the case just about everywhere in NZ now, they seemed a little short staffed, but the staff they had were hard working, pleasant, and eager to help. The rooms are large and incredibly well appointed, and the views from the hotel are stunning. That’s the great part about Eichardt’s. BUT, there is a noise problem, at least if you’re in one of the “Mountain View” rooms that happen to be directly opposite a bar that plays loud music into the wee hours of the morning. When I say “loud”, I mean music that basically reverberates in the room. Unless you can sleep through anything, I would avoid the rooms that face the bar (we were in Room 5). The hotel is aware of the problem, and I realize that they are doing their best to address it, but it’s something you need to consider when deciding whether to stay there.

We were in Eichardt's Private Hotel for its seasonal Christmas afternoon tea on last Christmas day.
The entrance to the restaurant had nicely decorated Christmas tree and gorgeous gingerbread house.
The afternoon tea was an authentic afternoon tea with scones, sandwiches, some sweets, homemade minced pies, wines or mocktails, coffee or tea and lovely ginger bread men. The restaurant manager knew his thing and served us well. Thank you for that. From the best table seating in the restaurant, enjoying the most expensive view in Queenstown out of the windows, we loved the experience very much.

We stayed in one of the beautiful apartments looking over the lake. The rooms have every thing you could want to be comfortable and to feel like you are on holiday and being spoilt. The little touches are so nice like the bathroom amenities and complementary water and soft drinks in the fridge. The staff are wonderful in particular Daniel. We will definitely be back one day.

I have recently stayed at Eichardts for the first time. We usually stay at Matakauri (4 or 5 times) and have also stayed at Blanket Bay twice. Eichardts were utterly impressive and right on a par with these other properties in regards to the calibre of their staff and service and food.
The only downside was that our suite felt a bit 'pokey' but this was solely in regards to the layout rather than the actual available space. Once we explored we found there was lots of space and places to put things away. But it was not the open plan format we have become accustomed to in recent years.
I loved the exposed schist walls and other historic nuances. These features were beautifully blended with stunning decor and every comfort you would expect of a luxury hotel. Sumptuous linen and towels, gorgeous marble bathroom, superb mini-bar/kitchenette area, WIW, amazing service.
One minor negative comment I would make is that we had afternoon naps both days and were woken up by a call from reception to ask when we would like our turn down service for the evening. Absolutely brilliant to check with guests when they want turn down and no other luxury hotel we have stayed at has considered this particular personal touch... but, it would be worth considering asking guests at breakfast perhaps??? Or maybe send a text to their mobile phones?? Instead of waking them up when they are being decadently lazy....
Brilliant stay which was near perfect other than a couple of very minor FWPs. Thank you so much Eichardts.

We had a fantastic 5 nights at Eichardt’s. The room was very spacious with amazing views of the lake and mountains. Staff were approachable, professional and friendly. Room was well heated with a gorgeous bathroom. Nightly treat left at turndown and a very comfortable king bed. Although the Grille restaurant was only open for the weekend due to staffing the bar was a delight for an evening meal with good cocktail range and intimate surrounding and fabulous food and staff. We look forward to returning and for a bit of luxury we recommend Eichard’s to anyone that wants somewhere special to stay in Queenstown.
