Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We spent 7 days in Queenstown at the Matakauri Lodge for our Honeymoon and could not be happier with our experience. The setting it breathtaking with panoramic views of the mountains and lake in the dining areas and room. We were surprised to hear it was "down" season for tourism in October, but although we received some overnight snow on night, the weather did not inhibit any of our planned excursions throughout the week. In fact, it only dipped below 50 degrees Fahrenheit once, which made for ideal walking conditions without any large crowds of tourists.

Their chef prepares what must be the best dining available in Queenstown each night, and the staff could not have been any more friendly or professional.

This was as luxurious of a stay as we've ever experienced throughout our global travels and would highly recommend to anyone seeking a relaxing, 5-star experience in New Zealand.

This was an exceptional property and we had an exceptional experience enough so that we are writing our first review. The property was located close to the action (Queenstown) and was luxurious from the size, quality, layout, technology in the room to the quality of the canapes, hand crafted cocktails and meals. But the most outstanding feature was the attentiveness of the staff. Many people say 5 star hotel staff go beyond the call of duty but at Matakauri, they did!. The Staff overheard us discussing our birthdays we were celebrating together and surprised us with a birthday dinner in a special location (the Library). They also heard us discussing the night before we were leaving the local Vodka we had enjoyed for our pre-dinner drinks (which was not available in the US). We wanted to take a bottle home but were leaving in the morning. Their staff drove into town to secure a bottle for each of us before we left. Beyond the call of duty. If you are looking for this type of luxury property and exceptional personalized service, then we would highly recommend The Matakauri Lodge

Spectacular views, outstanding service, phenomenal meals prepared daily by a top Chef, sleeping quarters felt more like a cottage on a hillside above a lake rather than a "room" graced our arrival and welcomed us to this amazing country. After an unexpected travel inconvenience, the amazing staff extend the dinner hours to allow us time to relax outside with a welcome drink in front of a spectacular view. If that remarkable gesture, wasn't enough, they gave us a room upgrade! Truly outstanding first impression. Our favorite was hiking down to the dock on the lake and the trails that hug the lake immersing yourself in the awe-inspiring nature the area has to offer. So fortunate to have been able to start our trip this way, could not have imagined it better.

From the moment you are met by the team as you drive up and take in the warmth and beautiful surroundings you know this is a very special place! Room was exceptionally furnished with clean, modern, warm tones. the view, second to none, the fireplace, patio, spa bathroom all wonderful. The front of the house and the restaurant teams are all exceptional friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. We looked forward to our interactions and the exceptional food! The food, freshness and presentations were world class! We will definitely include a stay here again when we return to NZ!

By far the best meal/ scenery in Queenstown. Chef Jono does an outstanding job. The quality of the food was absolutely phenomenal. The service was all around outstanding and the view was priceless. We got an oyster, roasted blue nose fish, aged beef fillet and much more.

Dear ryansB6827LX, We are so pleased you enjoyed your dining experience at Matakauri Lodge with our wonderful Chef, Jonathan Rogers. Central Otago is a stunning region which delivers beautiful vistas and delicious local produce, which is key to Rogers modern New Zealand cuisine and daily changing menus. We hope to welcome you back to Matakauri Lodge soon. Warm regards, Matakauri Lodge

The Matakauri Lodge is magical. The comfort and quality of our stay was unprecedented. The staff's professionalism and service made us feel we were at our home away from home. I've spent approximately two decades in customer service. The quality and guest experience at Matakauri Lodge exceeded my highest expectations. If there were one place on Earth we'd return to it would be Matakauri Lodge. The property offers breathtaking views that cannot be appreciated through pictures. You must experience them with your own eyes. Even on a day when it rained, the serenity filled our hearts with happiness. I've never felt so relaxed in my lifetime.

Our Agent found us the lodge and we were very happy she did! It was perfect in everyday. We had lodge 9 it had amazing views and was so comfortable. The team were all amazing but want to say Katlyn and Greg and Vincent were so helpful and very attentive in every way . We could not have asked for more. They drove us into town every time we needed and we just got a taxi back.
As it is further from Town it is quiet which we loved.
We had a private helicopter ride to see the Glaciers which was amazing and a must do!
The mountains are wonderful and so beautiful change at every moment! The restaurant was super and the food amazing and the service as a top restaurant .
We have to say a big thank you to Rosie as they found my husband life dependent medication which some how we left in a drawer ! They have arranged for this to be posted and tracked to our next destination how amazing thank you so much !
We are travelling NZ for the next 4 weeks and hope all can aspire to your level of service and accommodation provision.
We totally recommend to everyone. Go and enjoy 😍

Dear SusanB387, Thank you for sharing your experience of Matakauri Lodge, it was a delight to host you and we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. Thank you for your compliments to our team, we are pleased they were able to assist and enhance your stay and we will share your kind words with them. Queenstown is a beautiful region in New Zealand and we are lucky to be located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu with beautiful views of the ever-changing mountain range. While the lodge is only a 10 minute drive from bustling Queenstown it feels like a world away, nestled among native bush providing a traquil space to rest and relax. We are so glad you had the opportunity to experience the helicopter tour, it is truly a one of a kind experience and seeing this stunning region from above is awe-inspiring. We sincerely hope you enjoy your travels throughout New Zealand over the coming weeks and hope to welcome you back to the lodge, or one of our sister lodges, in the near future. Warm regards, Matakauri Lodge.

This was a bit of a splurge at the end of a 2 week celebration of our 20th anniversary, and it was totally worth it. The rooms were stunning, and so private. The staff was amazing. The views were unreal. One evening we walked out on the dock and experienced the Southern night sky as you would not believe. The food was excellent. They made easy arrangements for us to go into town for a lovely dinner, arranged a private tour, and helped us identify amazing hiking trails. So glad our New Zealand adventure ended with this memory.

Matakauri Lodge is nestled in one of the most beautiful settings I've ever seen. The rooms are large, beautifully appointed with spectacular views. What makes Matakauri so special is the warm, friendly and well trained staff that went out of their way to make sure our stay was an incredible and memorable experience. They took customer service to a whole new level by sending a staff member to town at 8 PM to buy a couple of bottles of NZ Vodka that we had at the hotel and wanted to bring home!

Thank you to all the incredible staff…. Hinekehu, Pollyanna, Kat and the rest of the wonderful team! The space is incredible, food great and staff exceptional… we had such a wonderful stay!! We were delayed in getting to Matakauri due to being trapped at mount cook because of landslide and the team were very helpful and accommodating in shifting our stay a day. We really loved our private yoga with Sandy and the bath looking out at the incredible view was just such a treat!!! Our only suggestion / constructive feedback is around the massage and tv. When we checked in there was an issue with the tv that meant we couldn’t change tv channels…. Neither we or the staff member checking us in could resolve this and it didn’t get resolved over the stay. Not a big deal but a minor annoyance as my husband likes to watch news in background (actually maybe a hidden upside for me to not have that in the background 🤣🤣🤣). And the massage therapists were lovely but didn’t seem very experienced and my husband’s massage was very soft. I know it is really hard for hospitality to find staff at the moment so maybe they were new therapists but as I specifically asked for really firm remedial massage for husband I would have preferred if team had explained they didn’t have very experienced/ strong therapist available and we could have organised something else (particularly as we had a shorter time in Queenstown due to the weather issues). But overall an incredible stay and highly recommended!!!
