Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great hostel more like a shared house. Perfect for backpackers living and working in queenstown. I’m a waitress and finish work at 10.30/11pm, there’s always people up when I get home, the kitchen doesn’t shut and everyone is a really social group. If you want more of a homely vibe and to meet other long term stayers then this is the place 😊

I stayed at the Last Resort for 2 months from April to June 2021 (which were originally supposed to be 4 weeks). The house is homely, the people there feel like family and the overall vibe is just great (the manager ensures this!!) Recommend 1000% !! Definitely a must stay when in Queenstown if you’re looking for new friends. Movie nights every night and fun outings. Def more a family than your roommates. Much love and I’ll be back for sure ❤️

Spent 2 months there as I was working up the Remarks for the season, and had a great time !
Small backpacker for the ones who don't like the big places where you're just another face amongst the others.
Really good wifi, free breakfast and good vibes, have to try it Bro' ;)

We get it this hostel isn't the most flash, it isn't the biggest, the showers aren't in mint condition, but hey they have hot water and it's far from the slums.

While I was staying there I was one of those long-termers who thought we owned the place (as far as I was concerned we did). But hey, we included anyone who wanted to join in on the fun; And if anyone had a grudge that we were there it was not for lack of friendliness as I am sure it was someone who just wanted their own space to come and go from - so if your're not into making friends, yeah this place probably isn't right for you.. or probably travelling at all for that matter.

The Last Resort is rather small, quaint, and the beds use 100% Egyptian Cotton the last time I checked, so that's right you're getting 5 star quality sheets at a backpackers price, posh as (and I'm not sure as of now, but previously pillows came with a candy on top too). There was a roboto girl that used to worked there that you had to be weary of if you caught her on the wrong day, but the place is under new management now so you don't have to tip-toe around at night anymore.

Basically ~ the price is affordable and you get breakfast...you are literally in the middle of town under 5min from all the stores, shops, restaurants ... it's a fun place if you're looking to stay somewhere unique and special and its whole appeal is its alluring charm that comes with the essence of being in the tucked away lakeside paradise that we have all come to know as the beautiful and wonderful - Queenstown.

If you're not up for snuggling up with strangers for movie night or taking part in weekly dinners, pack your bags n get outta here! This is the Last Resort.

Kia Ora that means Cheers!

Well, this place is hard to describe. To start, when I arrived, for sure I had the worst welcome at all of my hostels experiences ever! The receptionist was in a very bad mood and was rude when I asked about the breakfest and wifi, she said that she would tell me everything in the right time. And then she was around sending angry glances at everyone and at me, making me feel unconfortable.
The room was confortable, not many space but enough, the bed was good and the two pillows are a great thing, they also offer free towel, so that's a positive thing either. The upstairs bathrooms are tiny, but the shower is really good with amazing hot water, I got very good showers there. The negative point about bathrooms is that is just two bathrooms to serve 4 rooms (about 18 people).
Kitchen average, but small. Good TV lounge with lots of DVDs. Nice fireplace. Free computer with internet access. Free WiFi, and I think it is unlimited cause I had no problems with it.
The other guests are very friendly and nice people, that was very good, and as this hostel is so small, you can know more the people and always talk to someone in the common areas. We feel like we are with friends. The other receptionist, a younger and dark haired girl, she is indeed very nice, friendly and totally the opposite of the grumpy one.
Oh, and they offer breakfast too, but only if the kitchen is not a mess by the morning, this kinda force people to wash and put away their own mess. That's a good idea but can be unfair with the people who clean after eating, like me. In the first day I did not have breakfast because of others.
So, I would return to this place, but please grumpy receptionist, try to be kind with people, we are choosing your place amongst a lot of other hostels in Queenstown.

A great small hostel, it was clean and cosy when i arrived the receptionist Kate was ultra friendly and super organised; its close to the town centre but set back off the road over a little bridge with a garden. Good wi-fi free!

Chose it because I wanted a cosy, small hostel. It was small. And the bed was nicely made up, with 2 pillows. Beds looked great but the mattress had a hole in the middle from all the travellers that slept in it before. Only 2 showers for the whole hostel. Second one right next to reception was really grubby... Door to bathroom downstairs was hard to close. But the worst was 1. that it was freezing cold in the kitchen and common area (luckily rooms had heaters but sitting on the bed was hard as bunk beds were really low)! Sat in my down jacket freezing and one of the staff there just said, 'yeah, we should get the fire started this week.' WELL, I am freezing now!

2. The owner was even worse. No doubt she hates her job. Was very annoyed by questions and made one feel stupid for even asking questions. Oh, and there is only 100mb Internet per day free which you can only use on one device and you can't swap. And you can't buy more mb! And I personally didn't like the doorcode system though it was the one thing in the hostel that seemed very new.

There is also the rule that there is no breakfast in the morning if the kitchen isn't clean. But honestly, the ones who don't clean, will not care and it is not fair for the rest who behave and pay 30$ a night! Plus the kitchen is quite old and grubby and not very well equipped (though it has the basics).

I have stayed at Bumbles Backpackers (friendly staff and with Lakeview) and Haka Lodge (new and very clean and friendly) afterwards which are both way better value for money (I would recommend Haka Lodge)!

Positives: Bedding and towels were clean, free breakfast, didn't feel busy, secure entry system, good location.

Negatives: 2 beds I stayed in both were old and mattresses needed replacing, sick in upstairs sink not cleaned up until well into the morning of the next day even though staff were on site, old crusty soap bar in upstairs bathroom still there after I had been away for 3 days, window in female dorm had a tatty broken blind so room was never dark, old towel left under my bed not cleaned up, needed good hoover generally.

The most friendly, homely hostel ever! I lived here for several months in 2021 and will always return when I am in Queenstown - the vibe, people, and cute quirky building made it immediately feel like home. It’s also got great facilities, comfy beds and free laundry, lovely communal spaces and front garden for drinks, bbqs, sunbathing, beaut views of the gondola! I’ve made lifelong friends and memories at TLR - it’s a really special place and I 100% recommend for anyone wanting to meet people in Queenstown and live in more of a home than a hostel 💗
