After walking the Milford Track with our children as independent walkers in Department of Conservation huts we needed some luxury. The Milford Sound Lodge looked perfect and it exceeded our expectations. I had read some reviews that implied it was overpriced and under-delivered. Those reviewers must have a different value system to me. I was impressed. From the modern Kiwi aesthetic of the reception and the chalet, the hospitable staff, the cosy well appointed chalets which ooze comfort, to the raw majesty outside the huge windows. We found the food excellent. My partner and son were just knocked out by the venison saying it was the best ever eaten. I found the cheesecake my favourite of the meal but my seafood chowder was perfect as well. I used the communal area where the campervans park for doing laundry and it looked like the nicest 'holiday park' that I had ever seen. I think that the location in this remote unspoilt granite fiord must take much of the credit for our experience, however it must be tremendously difficult and expensive to offer us the experience we received at the Milford Sound Lodge. I don't begrudge the costs. If you are price sensitive then take a bus back to Te Anau and stay in a generic hotel room. This is the 8th Wonder of the World and I was happy to pay for such an awesome experience. Keep doing what you are doing Milford Sound Lodge!

We booked the Riverside Chalet as part of the 1 night "Taste of Milford" experience via the website. We checked in around 3:30pm and had a parking spot directly in front of our chalet. There are about 8 chalets across the back of the lot, along the river with a private viewing area between the chalets and the river only accessible by those in these private rooms.

The chalet rooms are fantastic with heated floors in the bathroom and kitchen area. There is a large comfortable bed, as well as a sofa and dining area too with floor to ceiling windows to stare out at the gorgeous view of the mountains with the temporary waterfalls running down them and the river in the foreground. There is a small deck/patio area outside to stand or sit which is perfect to take in the stunning view. Everything inside the chalet is modern, with a lovely clean bathroom.

Our package included dinner and breakfast which were both excellent, in particular the breakfast platter for two! Only issue was the service for food was very slow on both days. The tour included in our package with Southern Discoveries was great and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you're keen for a bit of luxury to enjoy this beautiful place, this is the way to do it.

Just spent 2N on powered site, majority of which are private with trees/shrubs on 3 sides. Stunning location just 15 min walk to visitors centre and another 15min to harbour where all cruises depart

Fantastic communal camp kitchen, lounge and dining areas and awesome unisex 8 toilets and 8 separate showers which are all individually locked branching off laundry and common areas.

On site Poi Poi restaurant is only restaurants at Milford Sound so I'd suggest booking prior to arrival or go to supermarket at Te Anau on way through as nil stores at all at Milford Sound

My husband and I were lucky enough to find a riverside chalet available for our recent trip to Milford Sound. Unfortunately the road was closed due to snow the day we had booked but the helpful team kept a chalet open for us the following night in case the road opened.

Thankfully it did, and we had a magical drive through snow covered peaks and forest before arriving at the lodge. It was gorgeous. Warm, meticulously clean, tastefully designed and decorated, with incredible views of waterfalls and beach forest across the river, and mountain views the other side. It was our 10 year anniversary and it was the perfect place to celebrate.

We went for a 20 min walk along a pretty forest track to watch the sunset over the Sound and Mitre Peak, then back for dinner at Pio Pio restaurant. The meal was extremely good. My husband is a chef and he was very impressed.

The next morning they delivered a delicious selection of breakfast items, which we enjoyed before setting off on our cruise at 10.30am.

If you have the chance to book a chalet at this lodge you should absolutely do it. It was the opportunity of a lifetime. The staff were so friendly and nothing was a problem.

Highly recommended.

We stayed 2 nights at Milford Sound Lodge after walking the Milford Track. At over $615 NZ per night we were left feeling a little underwhelmed. The Chalet room was glorious re the view and quality fit-out, we admit, but at that price the little touches were missing - just one body wash to use for both vanity and shower, no moisturising lotion, shampoo and conditioner combined (not separate) and no gowns or scuffs. Parts of the dining room were in obvious disrepair and even though the staff were friendly they weren't all that over attentive.
Sounds like we expect too much perhaps but at that price, we don't believe our experience was commensurate compared to other experiences costing the same or even less.

We stayed one night after walking the Milford Track. It was wonderful to have a shower and comfortable bed, then linger in Milford Sound rather than rush off to Te Anau. We stayed in a Mountain View Chalet, which was rather expensive but in the context of the trip we decided to splash out. The staff at the Lodge were friendly and helpful - gave us a lift to/from the cruise boat; coffee and light meals good value. Continental breakfast was delivered to our room on time and there was no problem with requesting extra milk for cups of tea. We dined at Pio Pio restaurant - top prices but excellent food and friendly service. Menu somewhat limited but it is at the end of a long road! The lodge appears to be new, the rooms and the view are beautiful and there seems to be an awareness of the need to protect this pristine environment.
We also took a look at the facilities for camper vans and they were outstanding.

We stayed at the Milford Sound Lodge for 1-night and took a boat cruise the following day. The cabins are super comfy, very new, clean and modern, it actually felt like a bed in a 5-star hotel!
Amazing food and friendly service at the Pio Pio cafe for dinner and a lovely breakfast delivered to our room the following morning before our boat trip.
The location is stunning, easy walks along the stream with the kids and lots of interesting wildlife to spot. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Everything about this place is amazing. The location, the scenery, the rooms - felt very decadent and would have loved to stay longer. Even before our trip began I had great communication with the Lodge in regards to dietary needs and allergies, and when our flights were cancelled the staff were brilliant in letting me know what our options were.

Due to allergies and dietary needs it was only my son and I who ate in the restaurant, while the other two in our party went to the shared kitchen and cooked their own meal. Dinner was beautiful but the dessert? Holy crap it was amazing. I had the chocolate mousse and it was incredible.

Throughout the rest of our trip my son could not stop talking about how comfortable the chairs in the restaurant were - they had sheepskins on them.

Definitely a luxury stay, and the price does reflect that. I would absolutely love to stay again if time and finances allow.

Oh, and we were graced with the presence of two very friendly kea

Stayed in a chalet while visiting the amazing Milford sound. Comfortable and well appointed, wifi worked surprisingly well. Booked room with a Milford sound boat tour included which the lodge provided transpo to and from. Food is very average so would suggest bringing your own, there’s a large shared kitchen and laundry room. Only real gripe is sandflies (not the lodges fault) and the fact this place is priced like a luxury hotel when it’s really just a nicely done hostel but that’s to be expected given the locale.

We booked a mountain chalet for 2 nights on our trip to Milford Sound. From Te Anau it was about 2 hours drive, passing most scenic spots.
The lodge compound is modern, hidden behind the trees, enough parking space for campers and private/rental cars. The staffs are very friendly. Room is nicely furnished. With comfortable sittings and bed. Beautiful view of the mountains and river.
Amenities such as numerous kind of Tea leaves, grind coffee beans, interesting books to read, sustainable bathroom products etc are available in the room. Note that there isn’t ironing facility in the room.
There is wooden picnic table outside the room, but we hardly use it because of the mean and brutale sandflies. Being located near the water (river) and surrounded by trees, the amount of sandflies flying around specially at the dusk comes in abundant.
Breakfast can be ordered when checking in or daily before 6pm. Very good breakfast!

We had reserved a table too for dinner (highly recommended). Food served quickly and they were good too.

We had a pleasant stay here, a couple of minus points though.
1. We asked for fresh clean towels but upon returning to the room, we could feel that towels weren’t refreshed at all. They were all still damp. Even the shower mat was still damped too.
2. Knowing that we would check out very early (to be back on time in Queenstown) prior to breakfast being served, we had informed this to the front desk staff and at the same time enquired if we could have a breakfast takeaway. The answer was gladly yes and the staff had noted it down too. But what we received on that morning was 2 pieces of cold hard croissants, a small cup of jam and butter. I don’t mind the small quantity but giving out an old bread specially puff pastry kind of bread is sort of no-no. We just tossed the hard croissants away after having a bite of it as they weren’t edible. Hence we had to spend a little more time somewhere along the way to have a proper breakfast, which wasn’t in our planning at all.

Apart from that, it is a good place to have a good and peaceful rest (inside the room away the sandflies)

We stayed in the hotel so I don’t know. The place is amazing though. You might get snow then. I was there in November, so late spring, and the road out got closed for two days. If your schedule is flexible it’s kind of cool to be stuck out there.

I think it depends on the room. Our beds were in two small rooms which were not actually separate, and I think there were maybe 8 or 9 beds, some of which were bunk beds

Is Milford Sound far from Lake Wanaka? Is a day trip possible?

We just returned from new zealand. drove from queenstown to milford sound and it was a pretty long drive. try to start the drive early. We started at 10am and we arrived at about 4pm so it was a total of 6 hours. we had a few times of stop for some stretching and coffee. a drive without breaks is simply impossible to be honest. We also did just a day visit at milford. It was an amazing stay at the lodge and also the cruise was beautiful. there are many place to hike at milford and if you plan to do that, you will need more than a day. but if you are only doing just a cruise and aren't tired from the driving, one day is enough.
