Being a photographer I was very pleased with the location of this lodge. Just in front of Mitre Peak. If you walk a few minutes the views are great! I advice you to do so at sunrise.
The lodge itself looks a bit 'seventies' from the outside, but has surprisingly good and modern rooms. You can have breakfast and there is a bar, but they don't have a restaurant. Just around the corner you can eat in a bar (average quality). If you plan to visit Milford Sound this lodge is the place to be. It's not cheap but certainly worth to spend a night. Staff is very friendly. Beds are good. Rooms are clean. Unfortunately you are completely disconnected: no mobile network and no internet.

Mitre peak lodge is a reincarnation of Elizabeth Sutherlands chalet built circa 1900's for 'weary' travellers. Its an old building which has been refurbished but still the 'old' remains and is evident as you approach and walk in the building.
As soon as I walked in it reminded me of the Overlook Hotel out of the classic movie The Shining with black and white historical photos on the walls.
The lodge has prime position right on Milford Sound, you cannot think of a better place to stay in terms of getting 180 degree views across the lake and seeing Mitre peak in all its glory. On the day we visited and when the sun setted, it seriously looked like a picture from Lord of the Rings - Two towers with the sun creating a volcanic like light in the low clouds - truly a memorable and spectacular sight and goes to show how little editing they would've needed to have done to create the special effects.
This lodge caters to the Ultimate Hikes trekking group and our group of 50 had just finished the trek.
The staff there are all very friendly and the food was well cooked and presented, no complaints with that at all.
Our room on the second floor (Room ES 2 perhaps?!) was decent sized and the bed was ok. The décor and facilities are a bit tired but you need to put this into perspective of where you are and how remote you are from anything. The bathroom is by all means good and clean, its just not your 5 star shower or anything..it most certainly does the job though.
Ok... so the long and short of this is that my partner and I were fast asleep. I awoke in the middle of the night to the sound similar to that what you hear at a ball or like intermission in the foyer of a movie theatre. Many many people talking but nothing audible, light old music in the background barely audible though. A womans voice was noticeably louder than the others but still inaudible. I thought it must have been a tour group that was coming off a bus or something and fell asleep again. (As I just awoke my faculties weren't 100% because why would a tour group be getting off a bus in the middle of the night) It must have been for only a few minutes as I woke again to the noises but this time I opened my eyes and could see a light - it was my partner and the light was coming from her phone. I asked her whether she could hear that noise and she said yes.. I asked whether it was her and her phone and she replied no and that she was closing her apps on her phone in case it was an app that was causing it.
She let the phone light go out so it was again dark in the room and we lay for a minute listening to the noise.. not saying a word. As the noise seemed to be coming from outside (not the rooms either side or the door) I got up and walked around the bed towards the bay window which had curtains drawn. As soon as I touched the curtain to open it slightly the mumbling noises etc.. stopped immediately. Once open I poked my head through the curtain and all I could see was darkness... nothing.. just a couple of lights in the lake and some scatted around the lodge.... but nothing else. The wind was still slightly howling through the window which was open but that's it. I closed the curtain and said to my partner that she was playing a joke on me. She said she wasn't. I asked her to turn on the light so I could see her face to see if she was laughing and when she turned it on all I saw was a scared look on her face.
I am sure you can finish the rest yourselves but we both heard the same noise.. we were both woken by it and it stopped as soon as I opened the curtain to look out. It didn't restart at all either. in no way could it have been a tour group at that time or cause it to stop so suddenly. lest to say we were both spooked by this and after much googling cannot find anything on it... so go figure. just saying that this happened, its legit and we can't for the life of us work out what it was. :/
So much for the review.... maybe I should be giving it 5 stars in case I upset the ghosts.. :)

Stayed here in December. The hotel is in a great location. The rooms are very basic but okay. The rooms have no bar fridge, Wi-Fi or TV. The breakfast was good with lots of food options. The set dinner was also good with the lamb rack being especially good. There is a self serve laundry and drying room was those with wet and/or dirty clothes. Understand the hotel is owned by Ultimate Hikes which in turn is owned by its parent Trojan Holdings.

Not much here but a bed and shower which is fine when you are in Milford Sound. What a place! The lodge had great views of the sound and Mitre Peak from most of the rooms. A couple minute walk will take you right to the sound. Can't get over how spectacular Milford Sound is. They do have a bar, a small gift store and pool table for when the sun sets and you are not yet ready for bed. Well worth staying here so you get to see the sound at sunset and sunrise.

Stayed here in January and was pleasantly surprised. It is an older building with amazing views. Was very very clean inside and the staff were lovely to deal with. Breakfast was provided and there was a restaurant next door which also served a great meal.

We stayed at Mitre Peak Lodge at the last day of our guided Milford Sound hike. The room we had was not only very comfortable and nicely equipped with eco-friendly amenities, we also had a fantastic view of Mitre Peak. To top that, the staff service was pleasant, friendly and efficient.

Mitre Peak Lodge is located around the corner from the Milford Sound jetty and ferry terminal. Literally a very pleasant 5-minute walk and the nearest accommodation to the drop-off cruise/ferry point if you've just walked the Milford Track.
The property has amazing views from the front rooms on the upper level overlooking Mitre Peak and the Milford Sound itself!
Our room was average in size but the massive window looking onto the Sound and mountains made one feel it was huge. The bed and linen were comfortable and the room was spotlessly clean. The bathroom was a reasonable size - given this is an old hotel.
The staff were very professional and efficient throughout our stay and I felt it was a well managed property.
The food was of a high standard and excellent given the isolated location.
Highly recommended!

This was previously a TYHC government hotel and while it is a little tired, the food and drinks were good. The staff were quite helpful. Some type of internet access would have been helpful. GREAT VIEWS>

HI, This lodge was booked as part of our Milford Sound Hike. Might be worth emailing Ultimate Hikes NZ to get the contact numbers for Mitre Peak Lodge as it is one of their lodges during the hike.
Ultimate Hikes NZ - (you have to google them as I can't post their website link or email address here).
their number is:
+64 3 450 1940
See how you go. Mitre Peak Lodge don't seem to have a number listed in the phone book. Good luck!
Yes to staying there. There is limited availability though so you must call them directly to book.
Hi there,
Did you ever find out how to book Mitre Peak Lodge? I'm having the same difficulty in trying to book.
Thanks,
Shirley
You can see the Peak from the Lodge but it is not exactly walkable as it is the other side of the fjord!
I made an separate booking enquiry through the ultimate hikes website and they advised me that Mitre Peak Lodge is used by their walkers on the final night of the Milford Track Guided Walk. So they do not take bookings for others until the week before as they do not know how many rooms they will require until then.
