Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Once a very grand hotel but now a lot of work being done .The room we stayed in was adequate for our needs .Linda the hotel manager charming .The price reflects the standard but was completely comfortable.
Hope Invercargill itself gets an injection of cash to improve its shops and general appearance soon.

We initially booked a double room however on our arrival found the room a little small. We were also staying for 2 nights so could have used a fridge and tv.
I asked if it was possible to change to a bigger room which was immediately accommodated and to my surprise, at no extra charge!
The foyer is not indicative of the rooms. On the contrary. The rooms are restored beautifully in the deco style of the era, and the bed is one of the most comfortable we have ever slept in!
There was an added bonus of cereal and milk for breakfast in the room at no charge if we wanted it too.
Linda and her staff are so very friendly and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
We'd love to come back in a couple of years and see how the renovations are progressing!

Under no circumstances book this hotel. I really don't mind basic, but I do expect clean. The hall areas were carpeted and they were sticky !!!!smeltof smoke stale food and wallpaper paste. The bedroom was furnished like bordello, black and grey sateen! The sink had two cracks, blue stain down the bath, shower gross, and I cannot describe the toilet seat disgusting. We got out of there as quick as possible. This was booked through booking .com and should never be listed again. Having said that the mine hostess was sweet and seemed embarrassed by the whole set up and gave us a refund which was very kind. thank you.

We stayed at The Grand on a recent tour around the South Island. It was amazing. Comfortable bed, the best we had on our trip. The Grand is close to everything, so leaving the car and walking to restaurants was another bonus. The rooms are huge, and the one we had was newly renovated. Everything you need on a budget. The new owners are in the process of renovating, and I wish them all the best. We would love to come back on our next trip.

I have stayed here several times now and have always enjoyed a very comfortable, warm and spacious room.
It is very convenient to be close to a number of good restaurants and very easy walking to amenities.
Linda is always welcoming and runs a good hotel. One of the benefits that I enjoy is having cereal and fruit in the Frig so I can have breakfast before leavingin the morning saving time.

A must see for everyone interested in old buildings. You can see the chairs where Queen Elizabeth sat when she visited NZ in 1954. Have a look as well at the Jugendstil wallpapers and the great ballroom

Parking was available down a side alley, the welcome and check in was efficient. Though quite focussed on the chair that the Queen once sat in, and whether we would like to see it. The hotel would have been very grand in its hey day, but now sadly it is just a memory of its former self. As we were shown to our room, we had the original carpet pointed out to us (that was there when the Queen visited). Our room was good for the price, the en-suite window however, flew open every time you opened the bathroom door. The shower was probably my favourite part of the room, so old, yet worked better than a lot of modern ones. The hotel clearly diversified during the winter months, as our floor was shared with students (noisy students at that!) and another wing had been let out to constructors. My advice to the hotelier would be to try to keep the three separate.

Close to everything - rooms were cosy and warm - lots of interesting history in the building and the owner Linda was only too happy to show us where the Queen slept when she stayed there. Building is a bit dated but worth the effort. Try the seafood chowder at Speights Ale house - awesome.
Would stay again for sure
