I have stayed here in previous years while working. Very warm welcome back. Stayed for 10 days for work. Clean, well serviced, super friendly. Easy walk to Countdown supermarket / fast-food outlet or Queens Park and if your tired of driving it is about 10 to 15 minute walk into the main shopping area. Located 1 or 2 km off the main road when arriving from either Dunedin or Catlins scenic route. The units are not the very latest but is priced right and some units are being refurnished June 2015. Will stay again for sure.

After driving for te anau to invercargill and having my accomodation choice fall through, I rung around to find Ashlar motel had the only room left in town.
Booked it over the phone and turned up.

Room was large, firm bed, good shower, tv, microwave etc. friendly welcome and a very good description and map given of all attractions in town, of which I didn't know existed till then.

Wheel chair accessable shower for those who need one,

Would stay again when in town next.

We arrived with no booking, and had a super friendly greeting from our hosts. The rooms are clean and tidy, and it is nice to have a door opening to the lawn out back. Nothing over the top - but just really handy, friendly, and well priced. Decent TV and amenities. Great fish and chips at Yum Yum takeaways just around the corner, which were nice to eat sitting in Queens Park.

So old and out of date. Run down worth $75 per night but charged more than double that. Queen bed but only two very thin little pillows. Ceiling peeling and stained. Could not use the guest laundry as they were washing towels etc. Would not come back

Booked and paid for Ashlar Motel 2 bedroom apartment accomodation through Jason's.com 5 months ahead. Received payment confirmation at the time and date confirmation 2 weeks prior to travel from Jason's. Arrived from Australia at Aslar to find that on one of Invercargills busiest weeks of the year we had no accommodation!!! Can't get an answer from either party why our accommodation was bungled. We were left to find substandard motel room accommodation that were the only rooms left in town!! Tiny rooms with no heaters, no TV's etc didn't meet needs that ended up costing more than the 2 room apartment with the amenities. Due to mismanagement this holiday ended up a disastrous nightmare financially as we had to find money to pay for the other accommodation at the motel upfront (even though we had already booked and paid for accommodation through Jason's prior). Then there was the added expense of eating out as no cooking facilities and paid parking at alternate venue. Gave both parties ample time to respond to my emails of discontent once returned home. Jason's said they are only an "advertising agency and passed the buck and haven't had even a sorry or explanation from either party. NOT HAPPY!

We booked to stay here on Wotif days prior to staying. When we arrived the owner told us they had overbooked and blamed Wotif. When I asked why I wasn't phoned she said they had no number. Surprise, surprise when she looked there was my number! She had booked us into a local B&B. It was a 2nd rate place. Old house, old room, TV/internet only in common lounge. Paper thin walls between rooms. Long way to walk with luggage from car.

My personal opinion was that they had groups staying and it was easier to move a couple and get more money by renting the room out to 4 or more people in one room (B&B dont allow groups to saty). Bad business!

Could at least have phoned or emailed and allowed us to decide. We had to drive 3 hours more to get similar accomodation.Let's wait and see now if we get a refund

Response from ashlar81, Owner at Ashlar Motel Invercargill
Responded 23 Sept 2011
Before we could close Wotif , your booking came through. On that day the city was very busy and the surrounding motel had no vacancies. We thought it will be helpful to locate another suitable accommodation and make arrangement before your arrival. This arrangement was done for your convenience. We are sorry if the Motel/B&B chosen was not satisfactory. Again we agree we should have phoned and explain the situation. However to tell the wider public "DON"T STAY HERE" is way out of proportion. We apologise for the inconvenience caused. As moteliers we go out of our way to help and assist customers. In this instance looks like we failed. We would be very grateful if you kindly remove your review on Ashlar. Our sincere apology. If you are visiting Invercargill again, the next stay with us is free.

This motel was booked for a weekend away with freinds to go to a international sports event, on our arrival the owners where no where to be seen, after numerous phone calls and attemps to contact them we had no luck. We had to ring around and try and find another motel which we did but was not easy because of invercargill being fairly full due to the sports event on!! This cost us time and money!! We did get a call from the Ashler but not until two days later when we where told we had book friday and saturday nights which we hadnt it was saturday and sunday!! a big muck up was made by Ashler ,with still no apoglogy from them!! wont go back there ever

The room was absolutely perfect. Mahays was very nice and made me feel at ease, her husband was very helpful making a call to Auckland and thus solving a wifi access problem I had with mi I-Pad. A nice motel I would certainly recommend.

I have stayed at a lot of motels and hotels around the world and throughout New Zealand. the Ashlar is without doubt one of the most welcoming and friendly place I have stayed at.

The room was warm and home baking awaited us. The location is ideal, close to town and the rooms were quiet.

For the cost it was real value, we would highly recommend the Ashla Motel.

WiFi is not free and this was the only downside if you don't have a cellular connection.

The Ashlar is one of the friendliest motels I've stayed in: Mahays is very welcoming, and makes sure her guests have everything they need. She went the extra mile when we asked for a late check-out after we met family members off a very early flight and they needed to crash for a while before we continued on our way. The location is really good; close to the central city and gardens, and the units are set back from the road, so it's nice and quiet. Some of the rooms are of an older style, but they do have everything you need. Recommended.
