Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed here for 3 nights in room 6. Older style hotel in desperate need of a revamp, carpet and curtains both had holes in them, however the room was clean and the shower hot.

Staff/Manager was nice to deal with, but would not stay here again. We only stayed as everything was booked out as it was the Burt Munro weekend.

Stayed here on a work trip so wasn't expecting anything spectacular, and right I was.
The rooms, the restaurant, the overall layout was just plain ordinary. The room decor was weak and the meal we had at dinner was overpriced for what was actually served on the plate, which in itself took far too long. An undercooked potato did not help the cause.
On a side note, $10 for 5G wifi did not seem fair.

We spent one night here in March 2005. We stayed in a one-bedroom unit for NZ$75. Though not much to look at from the outside, the interior was a warm, pleasant space. There was ample space, it was quite clean, and it exceeded our expectations.

The one-bedroom unit came a master bedroom with double bed, with a second bed in the living room/TV area. See photos. Fully equipped kitchen. Fresh milk provided at check-in. There is a restaurant onsite, and delivery to the room is available, but we did not take advantage. It is a short drive into the town center. Groceries, fuel, etc., are right at the doorstep.

Considering the motel's location on a busy road, it was surprisingly quiet. No complaints of road noise.

This motel was a Lonely Planet recommendation, and one we would heartily endorse.

The floors weren't vacuumed, light switches had brown finger marks on them, toilet wasn't even flushed let alone cleaned and the floors/ skirting boards were dirty. The mini oven provided was covered in dust and old baked food. Scuff marks all over the wall. We refused to stay and canceled booking immediately.

Everything about this place was below average. We turned up at check in time and the reception was locked. Called the number and was told they were getting milk and would be back in 5 mins. Which seemed strange as there was a 4 Square directly across the road and why would you go out right when check in time starts.. 10 minutes later they opened the doors for us. The rooms were pretty clean but everything was so outdated and average. The rooms smelt like toilet cleaner, the curtain in our room was ripped and there was an old milkshake bottle under the bed. In my aunties room, they had no light bulb in the lamp and when they tried to close the window the latch came off! Lots of permanent residents there and felt very dreary and not safe for young families. When we were unpacking our car, one of the residents who was clearly on something kept staring at my son and it was incredible unnerving and uncomfortable. There was a conference on that day in Invercargill so had no choice but to stay as everywhere else was completely booked out, even the air bnbs. We were with a group, and had booked a few rooms so felt somewhat safe being around people we knew. But morale of the story, always read the reviews and never let anyone else book your accommodation!!

Every once in a while you come across someone truly amazing; Cherie is that person. Everything was booked due to the flooding. I had an early morning flight and was lucky to even get to Invercargil. I called and Cherie confirmed she didn't have anything but she offered to check around and call back. She had no luck and was sending out an email to other hotels for possible no-shows. When that didn't work she offered a room that was getting ready for painting. She called in a helper to make up the room, added a TV, warmed the kettle, and added cookies and sweets. This was 8pm! I cried and gave her a hug. She had no idea that we had been soaking at a campsite for a week in Te Anau, we had numerous detours because of overflowing rivers, or that I was leaving because my dad was literally dying. She was just a wonderful person being helpful. The room was perfect and warm and the bed; glorious. Picked up Chinese across the street at Ascot and that was great!

I will never forget her and will direct anyone going to Invercargil to stay there or just say hi to this wonderful person if you're passing through.

Oh .. I’m really so touched by your review. You both had such an awful time of it all - and the news about your dad was so heartbreaking - especially with you being so far away. It’s truly devastating when your dealt a blow like that! I’m so glad we were able to help in such a small way. And I’m so humbled that it meant enough to you, that you would take time to write such lovely words. Would love to hear from you and hopefully we will meet up again. Stay safe, happy and well our wonderful overseas friends xx

At first glance you hope not to be reading the book by it's cover. But it's way worse. At the back of the property appears to be permanent tenants living in sloppy, messy conditions and loitering about. The room itself was incredibly dated and dirty. There was leftover food in the fridge. Dried noodles stuck to the kitchen bench. Hair in the shower. I could hear the man in the next room farting. Not a pleasant stay in the least - would have left but no other accommodation available in Invercargill according to my travel arranger after flight chaos caused by weather conditions.

Booked and paid for a one bedroom unit. Arrived to book in and told that the one bedroom unit not available but we could have a studio room. Asked for assurance that we would have the one bed unit the following night. Returned the following afternoon to a different receptionist to be told he knew nothing about changing rooms. We went to the studio room. Wet towels still in the bottom of the shower, no housekeeping done. We left and and checked into another motel. When we returned home I emailed asking for a credit. Not eve the decency to reply to my email. Not recommended

Don't believe a word they say about 'our place is yours, make yourself at home'. I've stayed in hotels/motels/airbnb the world over & never encountered a place quite like this - Fawlty Towers without the redeeming humour! Unapproachable, defensive & downright rude are apt adjectives for the proprietor & her off-sider. The only 'cheap' thing about this overpriced, drab & less than clean place, is the service & quality. As for the restaurant - it was so bad we just had to laugh. One of those great 'horror' stories to regale family & friends for posterity - but seriously, when they say homestyle cooking, they REALLY mean a home cook who can't cook & who charges like the proverbial wounded bull, just to add insult to injury, for bare bones meals that are tasteless, unappetising & stingy. This place is clearly running on the smell of an oily rag, & the subsequent stinginess shouts at you; they obviously missed the memo that those in the hospitality industry NEED to be hospitable & don't charge like a king while delivering like a pauper.... Maybe we just struck a REALLY bad few days, but I suspect not! I hope they at least take some notice of this review & get their act together, because I do wish their business well & have no desire to see them vanish down the gurgler, but if they don't act & change, they are a goner! Someone call the hotel inspector!!!!!

Cramped room. Heater kept going off. Electric blanket worked intermittently. You have to step up into shower which is slippery coming out. No fan in bathroom and whdn you pull shower curtain across......hardly any light. Paper thin walls. Proprietor nice and friendly but wont stay again.
