Really nice couple who were very accommodating. Room was spotless and comfortable esp when we were the only guests (they only take 1 booking) and had full use of the bathroom and toilet. After a crazy busy schedule in the rest of South Island this is a "slow-down and relax" stay. Garden was amazing and host was nice enough to bring us on a walk for 2 hours. Very unique b&b, bird watching from the comfort of the rooms. Breakfast was nice too, although no meat (bacon) was served, there's homemade bread and others. Highly recommend!

Ian and Jenny were lovely people who greeted us warmly. We came here for a relax in nature and that is exactly what we got. Birds such as the tui and bellbird came right up to the window to drink from a bowl of water. The property also has a short bush trail where you can possibly see a fernbird, which Ian showed us. Rooms were beautifully presented and extremely comfortable. The breakfast was amazing. It consisted of porridge, fruit, pancakes, bread, cereals, freshly squeezed juice and yogurts. Thank you for a lovely stay in paradise. Keep up the good work.

Staying at this Eco B&B is just like staying with friends. The hosts, Ian and Jenny, are wonderful and make every effort to ensure that you get the most out of your stay, which in our case included taking one of our group to a local doctor to get an ear infection sorted out! Having devoted themselves to the preservation of the marshland and native forest surrounding their lovely property, they are incredibly knowledgeable about the landscape and the bird life and take great pains to minimize their environmental footprint. As someone who considers themselves relatively eco aware, I learnt a few things and have them to thank for the fact that I no longer use tea bags (plastic mesh - check it out). The rooms are lovely - light, airy and tasteful and the beds extremely comfortable although it would be worth staying there simply to experience the silence and darkness. We were initially wary of having to share the bathroom but you will only share with your own party so it proved no problem at all. Fair warning though: if you like a soak at the end of the day, then note that it is shower only - long, hot baths being not vey eco-friendly.
This is also twitchers' heaven - the bird life is one of the great attractions of the property, as are Jenny and Ian who are excellent guides. Would highly recommend it to anyone looking for something different and authentic.

Bushy Point Fernbirds was our favorite stay during three weeks of exploring the best of the South Island. Full disclosure, we like to get a bit off the beaten path, especially in tourism-heavy countries like New Zealand. At Bushy Point, we felt that we had found a hidden gem as soon as we reached the end of the gravel road and pulled in the driveway...you can quickly forget that you're only minutes from restaurants, downtown Invercargill, and beach access.

We also like to support folks that recognize the importance of habitat restoration and conserving biological diversity. That said, the highlight of our stay was the tour of the on-property habitat conservation area with Ian. The short loop, which starts just a couple of meters from the B&B, goes through goes through beautiful native plant communities - the trail and conservation area are only open to guest of the B&B. It was really interesting to hear about the history of the property as well as the ongoing restoration activity. Seeing the endemic Fernbird was pretty exciting...this species seems to be doing very well on the property as we heard many, saw a few, and had one bird perch in the open just a meter away. Fernbirds are very inquisitive so they typically come to you rather than you needing to chase them into the bush. My recommendation is to arrange the free tour of the property with Ian or Jenny right after check-in and then do the loop again on your own in the late afternoon or morning when the Fernbirds are most active.

The quality of the room, breakfast, and everything else was superb relative to its very reasonable price. For dinner, we enjoyed using the shuttle van provided by one of the nearby restaurants.

Our stay here was one of the most memorable experiences during our NZ trip. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Jenny and given a few good dinner recommendations in town. The room itself was very comfortable and stylish, with a huge bed, very comfy bedding, and a pile of bird books! The room we stayed in had big windows on 2 walls and outside the private entrance (glass sliding door) there was a feeder where there was a constant stream of tuis and bell birds. The bathroom and shower were clean and well maintained. Breakfast in the morning was a feast - fruits, oats, cereal, jams and loaf of homemade bread. Jenny sent us off with some extra bread for sandwiches and tried to get us to take fruit with us. We had a lovely chat with her that morning and she took us on a little tour of their reserve. She was able to call over some fantails and we saw one fern bird briefly (it was a very windy day, so a bad bird day). We were taken with her hospitality, and that she was in no rush for us to leave the next day. Our only regret was not staying 2 days! Thank you Jenny and Ian! We would definitely return. This place is a gem.

Jenny and Ian were gracious and generous hosts to me and my husband for our one night stay at their gorgeous house on our recent NZ vacation. Although we stayed just one night, we were treated as friends by our wonderful hosts. The home and our room were lovely. Breakfast was quite nice and with a view of the backyard with the birds (tuis, blue bells and others) coming and going right by the windows. We were also treated to a couple of bird walks on their private nature reserve, which they built themselves and operated for years to the public for free! Aside from being great hosts and well known birders, they are also very interesting people that you would want to talk to for hours! We learned so much about the ecology and wildlife of the area from our conversations with Ian and Jenny, and on our bird walk with Jenny we spotted a few fern birds thanks to Jenny's keen eye!

Ian and Jenny go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The whole place is in an area of unbelievable beauty, and what they have done in terms of the conservation and regeneration of their land is truly amazing! They are both very knowledgable about the bird and wildlife in the area, and are happy to take you on guided walks to look at the wildlife and maybe even spot at Fernbird! The room is very clean and the bed sooo comfortable, it's hard to drag yourself out of it in the morning!! The breakfasts are delicious (and healthy) it's only a pity that we could only stay there for 1 night, we could have quite happily stayed there much longer.

Staying with Jenny and Ian at Bushy Point Fernbirds B&B was like going to stay with friends. We had a fabulous time there, and couldn't fault the hosts. The bed was absolutely divine and the location intensely quiet. Had the best nights sleep ever, and we found it difficult to drag ourselves out of the bed in the morning it was so delicious, but a breakfast banquet was calling, as were the fernbirds (and Tuis and Wood Pigeons)! We had a quick walk around the birdwatching track before tucking in to a scrumptious breakfast.

The hosts have spend 20 years regenerating and revegetating this sanctuary, and it you are into bird watching and want to learn more about NZ native (coastal) vegetation, then this is the place for you.

You have the run of the kitchen to cook your dinner, and although the facilities are what you might term 'rustic', you should find everything you need there for a really relaxing stay.
Highly recommend this accommodation if you are into conservation.

excellent stay at Fernbirds. with a warm welcome from jenny and Ian. the house is lovely, breakfast healthy and good. we enjoyed a guided walk to see some birds with Ian. our son even had his own room and felt at home immediatly (had some toys in the room). we were able to cook diner that night as we arrived late and during a crowded motorbyke event.

We had the pleasure to stay for (only) two days at the Bushy Point B&B over new years eve 2012. It was a perfect stay, one of the best we had during our trip, despite the rather bad weather, something like visiting old friends who go out of their way to make your stay memorable. Starting from the generous bedrooms and comfortable beds, the nice welcome coffee (and hot chocolate for our kids) to the hearty and healthy breakfast with freshly baked bread, oatmeal, fruitsalad and cereals, everything was just very, very nice. But the icing on the cake so to say is the personal care that both Ian and Jenny show for their guests. Just to give one example: We saw their beautiful glass art work and we were wondering where we could buy it. Jenny just called the artist and despite him just returning from holiday he created a nice glass-Tui for us. I could go in and on about their help and recommendations, but i suggest you just go and experience true NZ hospitality for youself...you wont regret it.
