Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One of if not the best welcoming I have ever experienced whilst staying away. The hosts were simply amazing and went above and beyond to ensure our experience was everything we’d hoped for. Very affordable and also a handy location to most things. Will definitely be staying here again on our travels and highly recommend this as a place to stay!

Owners very pleasant and helpful. Room clean and comfortable with good wheelchair access. Good parking. Quiet. Walking distance to central city, hospital, university, plenty of restaurants, cafes, supermarket. Would definitely stay there again. Complimentary newspaper delivered in the morning.

Stayed here three years ago and it was good but a bit scruffy. They've refurbished the place and done it well. The new proprietor is as friendly and helpful as the previous one and altogether this is one of the best provincial motels in NZ.

When we (3 couples from the Lion City) arrived at Dunedin, we headed straight to George Street, where we knew lots of motels could be found. We went into some, and they were either full or they do not have 3 rooms. There were some with car parks on slopes. That made it hard to load and unload baggages. Some were too costly and over our budget. As we drove further from the town centre the motels rates got more reasonable. A host from another motel was kind enough to call and recommended us to go to the Garden Motel as they had rooms available.
At the Garden Motel, we were greeted by Coral. She was the most caring, helpful, cheerful, friendly, charming and warm host. There were some options on the rooms given to us. The car park was spacious enough and on flat ground.
Coral also recommended us some restaurants for dinner that night. We took a walk to the city centre which was about 15 minutes away, looking at the many eateries along George Street. Finally we settled for one Thai restaurant. There were at least 4 Thai restaurant we came across.
Even Garden Motel is away from the city centre, it's an easy walk. There are many eateries nearby to choose from. Thanks very much Coral. Cheers !

A small and cosy place but with big hearted and caring hosts. The unit was quite nice and clean and warm and had all the things that a solo person can ask for.
The staff was also quite friendly and helped out in recommending the sight seeings.
The vibes and layout of the place were quite homely like and not just rooms stacked.
Would recommend to anyone who would not mind not having a good view from the room but otherwise match any other 4 star acco.

I recently stayed at Garden Motel when visiting a family member in hospital in Dunedin. They allowed us to check in earlier then their standard time since our room was ready, free wifi was offered on check in which was great to help let family know how things were going.

The unit had lots of space (2 bedroom unit) and more then enough room for the two of us staying. Room was nice and clean and service was fantastic. Willowbank Dairy is right across the road with multiple takeaways just down the road and a block over. Would definitely recommend!

I booked this motel in Sep. 2007 on holidays.com and I received a confirmation sheet without deposit by the terms of website. However, I arrived on Jan.22 and the owner told me the rooms were all occupied. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE CONDITION HAPPENED.

We would like to sincerely apologise to the family whose accommodation booking disappeared. We were very new to the motel industry at the time the booking was made through our new website in September 2007. As a result of the loss of this booking we have established a checking system that will ensure that this does not happen to anyone else.

The unit was clean, with a full kitchen and electric blankets. For us the unit was a little cold, we only had the wall heater and a separate fan heater. This is commonplace for Kiwi motels, but it really needs addressing. Otherwise everything was up to scratch and the location is central to everything, handily pizza and other fast foods are nearby. Something the motel cannot do anything about but we noticed it soon enough; State Highway 1 runs through the city, heavy trucks run down the hill into the city and their exhaust brakes can keep you awake. We found it really annoying. If you are noise sensitive then a hotel even more central would be advisable.

John & Bonnie are fabulous proprietors and go out of their way to make sure everything is tip top and are helpful with anything you might need. Units are clean, tidy and have everything you need including excellent heating and electric blankets when cold. Always stay here when in Dunedin as relatively close to Forsythe Barr Stadium. Great car parking onsite too with table and chairs outside each unit. Thanks John & Bonnie
