Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Older style house with all the culture. Great owners super attentive to any needs. We have two smaller children and nothing was an issue. We were also lucky enough to have a dinner meal in and would highly recommend! Breakfast served in a cosy little sunny room and even had a fire going. Would defiantly stay again, thank you.

We stayed one night only as we were attending the West Otago A&P show and loved it. Spacious room and excellent night’s sleep in a comfortable bed with a beautifully restored and immaculately maintained country home. Delicious breakfast and kind hosts. What more could you possibly want? Hope we can come back next year!

This is really one of the best Homestay Lodges in New Zealand! We stayed for almost a week at the Mainholm Lodge. It was lovely! Great food, a beautiful historic (1908) house and very cozy near the fireplace! Thanks Graham and Sandie

First of all I would commend the owners in how they have restored this beautiful old house. I had discussed my dietary requirements on the phone with the owner when I booked this accommodation a month previously and had been reassured it would be catered for. However, there was nothing available on the menu and the only option was a plate full of leafy greens, a few olives and some pieces of feta cheese for dinner. After discussion I did manage to get a few potatos and mushrooms to add some substance, as it was a bitterly cold wet day and I was starving!! Unfortunately, there was no apology that night and the attitude of the owner was not very open to my suggestions for future vegetarians who are also Coeliac. I was very surprised they did not even have gluten free bread in the freezer. Went to bed quite disheartened. Next morning when I mentioned my disappointment in the evening meal he admitted they had made a mistake and wouldn't charge me for it and lets draw a line under it and move on!!!!! Breakfast was in fact very yummy with a selection of fresh fruit and yoghurt and scrambled eggs. But unfortunately the owner's comments that he had googled Coeliac and I should be able to eat oats and porridge was awfully arrogant and ignorant. He then stated he would change the information on his web sites to say not able to cater for gluten free?? My partner enjoyed his food, but his overall experience was dampened as he knew I was disappointed in the lack of food for me.

Amazing accommodation, food and people. I highly recommended to anyone who wants a base in this part of the South Island - plus a bit of Victorian elegance and luxury while you're at it! The rooms are stunning, with fantastic views and the food is to die for (I recommend the steak, but make sure you leave room for dessert!). Really good value for money too. Very friendly owners and two very cute cats make this place feel really relaxed and homely. I can't recommend Mainholm enough - we haven't found anywhere else like it and we'll certainly be going back.

It was a real pleasure to stay in a home that still retains its original features and history so beautifully, like stepping back in time. The hospitality and warmth shown by hosts Graham and Sandi was incredibly welcoming. The meals were excellent too!

My father and I recently had the pleasure of staying with Sandi and Graham at their fabulous Mainholm Country Lodge. We had just flown in from the U.S. and were in need of rest and relaxation. Mainholm was just what we needed.... Charming rooms, big beds, friendly, knowledgable owners and best of all, the FOOD ! Sandi is an excellent chef and oversees the kitchen and all the food preparation. I was very impressed with the quality of food and presentation. Graham suggested good, local wines to pair with our meals and each dining experience was memorable. Sandi also prepared our take-away lunches, when we were out for the day. This came in handy, as we had no time to buy and prepare meals. I really enjoyed my stay here and will look forward to a return visit.

Breathe the country air in a rural setting, experience the big skies of West Otago, and be pampered by a host and hostess who know how to make you feel at home.
This beautiful historic Victorian mansion has been restored to elegance with loving care by hosts Graham and Sandi who have, over twelve years, created a sumptious setting while honing their considerable skills in hospitality. My wife and I arrived tired and travel weary, and left the following morning well rested after a comfortable night in a four poster bed, and well fed after a beautiful farm style breakfast. If you pass up this gem in the country, you pass up an opportunity for a unique and memorable stay as guests of a welcoming and personable couple.

Seek out this lovely Victorian lodge for a stay or a meal. Graham and Sandi have lovingly restored the house to its former glory, and now offer one the best places to stay on the South Island. We felt very privileged to have found Mainholm and will definitely return soon. Sandi prepares the food and Graham is the most hospitable host.

Having spent quite a long time in mainholm I had the possibility to get to know better the house, its surroundings and the owners.
Graham and sandy have spent 10 years renoving and taking care of this wonderful house. As a result you can feel the house living, breathing and giving back all the good she has been receiving.
They try to let the soul of the house in every rooms and so you feel like a king when you lie on their "king-size" bed. And don't tell me it is too small and not comfortable ;)
They have an amazing restaurant and the food is just perfect.
They always try to fit you preferences. A gastronomic cuisine but with a lot in your plate .. Isn't it the dream of everyone ?

One word : GO !

Go because this is a place you would never think it could exist there but it does and you have to discover it.
