There are great views of Dunedin from this B&B. It is high up on the hill but you can walk down into Dunedin in 15 minutes or so. And then there are plenty of taxis for a $10NZ back up the hill afterwards. It is a beautiful old house with a lovely, helpful hostess. I felt the breakfast could have been better - the egg soufflés were a bit tasteless, but we enjoyed our stay. But note there are lots of stairs up to the house and inside.

Are you ready for a touch of history blended with class? Then book this very lovey restored historical home with hosts who do it right. We really enjoyed our stay and learned quite a bit from our kind and knowledgeable hosts. Luxury all the way. Service amazing and not at all what you would expect. When you walk in the door you know you have found something out of the ordinary. If you are riding the rail trail and taking the train into Dunedin stay here for a bit of luxury and pampering, you deserve it.

Hilltop on High Street was without doubt one of the loveliest places we stayed during our trip to New Zealand. The house is not just beautiful, but warm and inviting. Our hosts, Cally and Lloyd, were kind and helpful, they really extended themsleves ensuring we enjoyed our stay in Dunedin.
We would highly recommend Hilltop on High St if visiting in the area.

Found this First Class B & B while trying to find a place that would give us a sense of being in a Dunedin neighborhood, in a home that would give us a feel for what living there would have been like ... the owners Cally and Lloyd welcomed us into their home and made us totally at ease. Many old homes feel kind of drafty and dated, but Hilltop has been totally restored and updated. It is very comfortable and the views of the harbor are worth the stay alone. We were traveling with our adult daughter and one of the selling points was that they have a single room available for people like us!

I am bemused why there has only been one review of this excellent b&b, until now.
Kelly and Lloyd are calmly warm and welcoming without being the slightest bit intrusive. They welcomed us with a glass or two of excellent wine, which was much appreciated after a long drive! Lloyd even insisted on driving us to our chosen restaurant as he thought it was a bit far to walk.
Our room had a certain style! (Never had crimson bed linen before.) It was huge with high ceilings, beautiful furniture, extremely comfortable bed, iPod dock, flat screen tv, hifi system, aircon/heat pump etc etc. The only small criticism is that the heating could have been turned on before arrival. The bedroom and particularly the cavernous bathroom took a while to warm up.
Kelly admits she is no good at full kiwi/english breakfasts so does a soufflé/frittata cross type of dish which made a delicious change from the standard breakfasts elsewhere. There was also the usual fruits, cereal, yoghurt, jams, toast etc too.
To cap it all we had a room with a view although this comes at the cost of a stiff uphill walk from the Octagon. All in all we had a most enjoyable two night stay.

My wife and I were offered a very warm welcome and hospitality by Cally and Lloyd.
This guest house has elegant spacious bedrooms and public areas which have been beautifully and imaginatively restored to their Edwardian splendour and, as its name implies, the house has a spectacular view from its balconies over Dunedin bay & the lovely Otago peninsular.
Delicious breakfast tailored to our requirements.
If you like to stay in a special historic and characterful B&B with great hospitality it's a real treat to come here

Loved our spacious room with the stained glass window and comfortable bed. Cally 's suggestions of places to visit were acted upon and thoroughly enjoyed. We managed the walk up from the town - it is good exercise after an evening meal and only takes 20/25 minutes. Breakfast was one of the best of the holiday and we had been spoilt by other hosts. A great stay. Thank you.

Hilltop by name , and hill top it was. Reaching it by foot was a great exercise in itself, which one does welcome during a holiday which involves so much good food an drinks!!!
Our hosts Cally and Lloyd were so very friendly, kind and helpful and discreet. There was definitely an "artist air" about the place, and a lot of interesting pictures and antique articles, each with a story.
After a great breakfast, we'd happily visit places for the whole day, and return to be welcomed by our hosts and invited to share our experiences over a few glasses of wine. And may I point out that in their spare time, both Cally and Lloyd are renovating an interesting old church in Dunedin to provide for their orchestra an acoustically-safe venue for rehearsals, and generally for Dunedin , a historic building accessible to performing artists etc. Admirable and community spirited is how I would like to describe our hosts!

Cally was the perfect hostess and suggested restaurants and places to visit. We had a large room on the ground floor with a stained glass window above the bed. Breakfast was very good. Hilltop is an imposing century old house at the top of the High street with great views over Dunedin.

Cally's breakfasts were delicious and set us up for the day.
A great place to spend an enjoyable few days.

(We stayed from 4-7 January 2016 but only reviewing on our return to the UK.)
