Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a nice B&B! A beautiful house and garden, a very comfortabel room. Ana is a wonderful hostess and prepares a delicious breakfast. I enjoyed my stay tremendously. Furthermore Portobello is the perfect storting point to discover the Otago Peninsula.

We asked Ana about seeing the Southern Royal Albatross Centre. It was late in afternoon so she suggested skipping the center and gave us directions to a spot we could see the Albatross as they returned to their evening spot. She was also a delightful hostess, serving us a wonderful breakfast. I left Sandisk behind and she was kind enough to mail it to me.

Wonderful old former Presbyterian manse with beautiful timber lined rooms. Very nice bedroom with separate lounge area. They are upstairs on slightly different levels and are easily navigated with care. Ana was a delightful and gracious host and we thoroughly enjoyed conversing with her. She went over and above her normal responsibilities in looking after us. It was lovely to be amongst the native bird song. Strongly recommended!

Anna and Richard were delightful hosts who provided an excellent breakfast and a large and comfortable room with a fabulous shower and lovely outdoor seating area!! Portobello is a beautiful place - very well located for all the natural and wildlife attractions of the Otago Peninsula. We had the downstairs room as the upstairs room was already booked - I think the upstairs room is very much better because of the views from the small balcony.

We booked the upstairs room (there are just 2 rooms at this property and I reccommend you book the upstairs room). The room was pleasant enough if a little awkward due to it being in the eves of the roof, however the views far out weigh any tiny issues with the room. The bathroom was fine. There was a separate siting room with biscuits and cold drinks if required (including wine - a nice touch I thought). Breakfast was a bit early for my liking (up to 9am) but it was fabulous. The owners are lovely people, however, I feel that the BnB is unfortunately becoming too much for them.

We stayed at the family home hosted by Ana and Richard. They made stay welcoming the rooms were clean comfortable and quirky. Stayed in the garden view room which had the best shower I have ever used ! Lovely gardens with lots of birds. Breakfast was amazing lovely homemade dried fruits bread and banana loaf. Went the extra mile with selection. Rooms had nice chocolates and fresh milk in the fridge in the guest lounge. Lovely fluffy towels and dressing gowns . Great place to explore.

Portobello is a much better stay than Dunedin! Tranquility surrounded by nature and wildlife. We spent two wonderful days at Otago Peninsula and where wonderful hosted by Ana and Richard. Their B&B is a hidden jewel - the breakfast was one of our best in 5 weeks NZL. We stayed in the room under the roof with a view over the sea. Beautiful! At day we walked along several beaches, saw seals, albatrosses, penguins and lot more birds and after dinner had a rest with free range of wine and beer at our B&B. We would always come back. Thank you, Marie and Mathias

We loved this quirky wooden home and felt very comfortable there. We stayed in the downstairs room and were very happy with it - enjoying the tui visits to the garden etc. Richard and Anna were very welcoming and helpful in recommending various tours according to our preferences. Breakfasts were very good with everything possible offered, cold and cooked. All in all a very good start to our NZ trip.

We stayed two nights at Captain Eady's, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay - it was comfortable, quiet, and breakfast was lovely. Our room was not the 'lookout', but still perfectly good, with use of a shared fridge (with wine & beer) and seating available in the guests' lounge upstairs. Portobello is well placed for exploring the Otago Peninsular, with all the beaches, cliffs and attractions to hand - and the host Stephen will talk you through them to make your day a success. Portobello 'town' is a 15 minute walk away, and has good restaurants for dinner. We were slightly surprised by the 'no keys' policy, you just walk in and out, but I guess that's just another joy of New Zealand, compared to home!

The romantic place of Captain Eady's Lookout in Portobello had a touch of fairy tales. The old house, his residents Anna and Richard - she with a great musicianship, he very wildely read - and a garden with wonderful hidden places full of flowers in every colour is very romantic. We had a spacious room with bathroom, an electric kettle and all what is needed to cook tea or coffee, we had WIFI - best in the kitchen! - and even electric blankets. In the morning we had breakfast in the new built sheltered patio with heater. Richard told us where we shall go and what is inexcusible not have been. So we have seen the Royal Albatross Center, not even half an hour from Portobello. It is really a must to go there. Especially when the wind is so strong, that the seabirds stand nearly still in the air - it's just great. And then we made a penguin excursion at night, which was ever so cute. And another thing that Richard told us, was a trip with the MS Monarch. We were lucky with the weather and have seen many different seabirds, even the huge albatross. It was a wonderful time here in your house, thank you very much for your kindness and hospitality. And Anna, your singing at Christmas was surely marvellous!
