We love this place! It's very comfortable; quiet peaceful, sparkly clean and thoughtfully laid out. Mary is the best breakfast cook ever! Oh my! The grounds are like an English garden with roses, beautiful flowers and many like nooks to sit, relax . I loved sitting and watching the Tui birds. The interior decor is "English cottage " with many little touches and treats for guests.

The location is great for hiking and wildlife watching since it it close to two wildlife refuges.

Mary and her husband Pat are outstanding people that care about their guests enjoyment of there beautiful area.. We are grateful to them for their good suggestions for local activities.

this is without a doubt a secret paradise, there is a beautifully landscaped garden full of beautiful plants and special birds. the location is centrally located on the peninsula so you don't have to travel long to get to particularly remote places. The room we stayed in was perfect, a lovely bed and a great seat to relax in after a long walk on the beach. The breakfast (a lot has been said about this already) unbelievable! We stayed here for three nights and so had breakfast three times. three times different but just as fantastic. Pat and Mary thank you so much for this experience and all the best for the future.

Lovely location, comfortable spotlessly clean room and bathroom slightly separated from owners accommodation. Fab breakfast taken in the owners house. Mary was the most congenial of hosts.
Be warned if you are staying on a Sunday or Monday there are no restaurants in the area open. Both are shut on same days. It’s a 30 min drive back to Dunedin.

Excellent facilities with friendly and extremely helpful owners for which nothing is too much trouble. The breakfasts cooked freshly each morning by Mary were a highlight of our stay in Dunedin. Easy walk to the Portobello pub and restaurant and close to the albatrosses and seal attractions.

Thank you so much, we had such a wonderful stay.

Myself and my partner only stayed for two nights as we were just visiting Dunedin for the university open days, I was gutted we couldn't stay longer.

Right from the moment we arrived we had such a warm welcome from the owners. Very lovely people and amazing hosts, beautiful garden and home which was very clean and comfy. The hot tub under the stars was a great way to relax after long days of my brain being over loaded with information.

Really nice food as well, we were welcomed with home made scones and coffee and the breakfast was great. You're cooking is very nice and defiantly set us up for the day!

Also thank you so much for the help and nearby reccomendations! If I need somewhere to stay in Dunedin again I will not be hesitating to give you a call!

April & Rangi

Magnificent address to stay! Pat and Mary gave us a very warm welcome. We are really at home here. Here we got the best breakfast ever in our whole life! Everything freshly prepared and special products at a beautifully set table in their nice prepared living room.
We enjoyed your fantastic garden and the many birds in this beautiful flower garden.
You were both sweet and took good care of us. Thanks again!

We love this place. We came here on our last visit to NZ, and this was at the top of the list of places to return to. The hosts Mary and Pat are charming. She is a fabulous cook, breakfast is to die for. The room is nice, and there is a Lot of attention to detail. The grounds are like an arboretum, flowers and birds galore.

Mary welcomed us very warmly. The tips she gave us for Dunedin and the surrounding area were very good. The room was comfortable, beautifully decorated and had everything you could need. The breakfast was delicious and extensive. The garden is a dream, also for relaxing.

McAuley Glen is a small inn located on the Otago Peninsula, near Dunedin, New Zealand. The town of Portobello is very small and quiet, and we were absolutely charmed from the moment we drove down the steep driveway into the glen where the house is located. The house and gardens are in the narrow glen, and the steep, grassy slope behind the house is frequently being grazed upon by sheep. I was so excited by how lovely the entire setting was that I could barely contain my glee when we arrived.

The innkeepers, Pat and Mary, are wonderful hosts, serving us cookies and tea when we arrived and making us feel welcome. We had many wonderful converstions with them about everything from NZ history, rugby vs. American football, soccer, kayaking, politics, traveling, family, etc. They also run a mountain bike and kayak rental business, and we recommend taking a kayaking tour with them. The day we went out, it was just the two of us with Pat, and you don't normally get that sort of flexiblity and attention from a tour.

There are two guest rooms on the lower level of the house, both with their own entrances. (Pat and Mary live above.) Our room was beautiful with its private garden with french doors, queen bed, and ensuite bathroom with heated tile floors. The breakfast was legendary. Never have we been served such a large and delicious breakfast, which included fresh fruit smoothies, pancakes, fresh fruit, cereal, toast with jams, tea or coffee, eggs, sausages, and broiled tomatoes.

Pat and Mary were also great guides to the area, pointing us to good restaurants, gardens, and "hidden" beaches.

We enjoyed our stay here immensely and would recommend it to anyone. In 8 years of traveling and staying in bed and breakfasts, this was our favorite.
