Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We booked through a booking site and then I noticed that if I booked direct it was cheaper, I got a room upgrade and free parking. They are gradually upgrading the single glazing to double and heaters to heatpumps. The beds hopefully are next as ours was very soft. The shower took ages to get warm, but it's not our water bill. It's nicer than the reviews suggested so I think a lot of the upset is people paying more than it's worth. Very clean and serviced every day. A couple of tips for thd hotel about deluxe rooms. Don't have bins and hooks from the dollar shop

This hotel is well situated near the centre of Dunedin and within walking distance of most attractions and amenities including a large New World supermarket.
The hotel has a new wing and an old wing with new one having air con and the old one having only opening windows.
We stayed in the new wing and it was very nicely furnished and good temperature regulation so for us was great but whether the older wing was the same I don't know.
The hotel provides free parking if you book direct on their website otherwise it is $10 a night.
The hotel has a restaurant that serves breakfast and dinner but we did not eat at them so cannot pass judgement.
Overall highly recommend the Victoria Hotel.

Excellent hotel in a perfect location. Staff very helpful and friendly. Very clean in all areas. Large room with perfect amenities. Very comfortable bed and no noise heard during our stay.
Water in bathroom was a bit temperamental and it took a while for hot water to come through in shower and sink.
Breakfast buffet wasn't great as food was very greasy, scrambled eggs were cold and rubbery and wasn't a great deal of choice.
Would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay again if in Dunedin.

I’m spending 5 nights in the hotel and I’m due to leave in the morning. My stay has been excellent. The bus hub is around the corner making it a great place for touring on public transport. The Octagon is two blocks away. My room is large, the bathroom is well ordered. In particular, while it has a shower over bath, the side of the bath is low and there is a good hand hold for stepping in and out. The room is very quiet even though it is on a busy intersection.
The staff have been very friendly and helpful but professional. I have had dinner in the restaurant on two nights. The food is superb, very flavourful and excellent value for money.
When I return to Dunedin I will stay here again.

Firstly the positives. It is located near the octagon so relatively good location and the staff were friendly and did their best under difficult circumstances.
The negatives. We were a large group and those staying in the old part couldn’t get internet until the next day. There was no safe in the room. They only could cater for about 20 people in the restaurant in the evening but we were not advised to book when checking in. The breakfast was the piece de resistance. Completely inedible, had been sitting out for so long the eggs had turned a awful colour and the rest was just as bad, I wouldn’t feed it to my dog. I waited thinking they would bring fresh stuff but as nobody was eating it it just stayed there.

Dear georgematthews Thank you very much for staying with us and spending your valuable time to write us a review. I am very sorry to hear that you had experienced quite a few issues during your stay and I suspect that your stay might be during the All Blacks rugby weekend in Dunedin, which was indeed a challenging weekend for our hotel with lots of guests staying. Firstly, I have to apologize for the issue with the internet, which might be caused by the extreme large volume of WIFI connection all at once during the busy weekend. This rarely happened in the past, and it got resolved after 24 hours when the system reset its cache / memory. Due to the current high level of the COVID and flu related sicknesses and isolations, similar to many businesses in NZ, we are experiencing a considerable shortage of staffs and the inability to deliver the best services that we always do on some occasions. Many of our frontline staffs are also relatively new and I must apologize for the unpleasant dining services that you had experienced during your stay. Thank you again for pointing out those problems to us and please be assured that we are doing our best to correct them. As our new staffs get trained over the time and the level of sicknesses drop in the near future, I am sure that we will not be repeating the same service issues again and be able to deliver the quality service we always have. Kind regards Hotel Management

Great facilities, comfortable spacious room and friendly staff. Location just down from octagon makes it easy to walk from town, and adjacent supermarket very handy for supplies with easy parking on site. Definitely will stay again.

After reading many reviews on this site and looking for somewhere with two bedrooms we booked here.

We knew there was an older part and a renovated part so we paid a little more for the newer two bedroom room. We got free parking as we booked directly with the hotel and had breakfast there in the morning.

The room was excellent - all new and had everything we needed. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We went for a walk to the railway station and then to the Octogon all very close. The staff then helped us with a taxi to dinner.

My nephew was unwell during the night and the staff left us say in the room a little while longer while he slept longer. They were very understanding and a great help.

The only negative was the breakfast was a little dry as I think it had been sitting in the buffet for a while. It still tasted good and did the job of filling us up.

We would stay and book this room again.

Our recent stay at the Victoria hotel, Dunedin was lovely. The staff were so welcoming and friendly particularly Catrina who went above and beyond in helping us to feel orientated and ensure long we were comfortable. The room was comfortable for the one night and the supplied fan appreciated. The amenities were newly renovated and comfortable to use. Parking at this hotel was easy and secure.

This was our second stay at the Victoria and this time we stayed for 2 nights. We had a room in the new block. It was spacious and comfortable. We had a microwave in the room. The shower was excellent but the automatic lighting in the bathroom was a bit annoying - it left my husband in the shower in the dark at one point! We booked on the hotel website so got the car parking included - if you book on any other website you have to pay $10 a night. We did not have any noise issues.
The hotel location is excellent - convenient to the central shopping area of Dunedin and plenty of eating places. We did not eat at the hotel.
Staff are friendly and helpful.
We will likely return to the Victoria next time we need a bed in Dunedin.

Dear roaming_kiwi58, Thank you for your glowing review, it is wonderful to hear you enjoyed one of our Superior rooms and all the facilities it has to offer! Well done also on securing the free car parking available exclusively on our official website. As our location is very central, it's quite easy to leave the car parked at the hotel and walk to the hotspots of Dunedin such as the octagon, train station or even the mall! As for the automatic shower turning off during your husband's shower, I can assure you this is quite unusual, if you would kindly provide the room number in which you stayed, we will be able to investigate further. We are delighted to hear you wish to return and we look forward to seeing you again! Kind Regards, Management

Dear guest Unfortunately that taking Taxi may be the only way to get to us or the city area from the Intercity Bus station. The walking distance from the station to us is about 15 minutes while the Taxi may only cost around NZ$10 or less. There should be no bus or shuttle available around the bus station area. Thank you.
