Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stayed here for 2 nights whilst touring the South Island. Good location near botanic gardens and about 2km from town centre. The room was clean and sufficient for our needs. Parking was initially difficult due to a function but this was after 5pm. However, during the evening and night we could hear our neighbours conversation through the walls. Inevitably their 'movement' during the night too!!.
The first morning we decided to have continental breakfast in the hotel restaurant. The filter coffee machine wasn't working but coffee from a pot was available. The fruit juice tasted like it was made squash not fresh fruit. The 'fresh' fruit was from a tin except the pineapple and melon. The jam was in small plastic sachets and mostly liquid. The bread was croissant (tasted like made the day before) or sliced bread. The next day we moved on and found a lovely cafe on route - lesson learnt.

Dear Eric A, We were disappointed to read your review as we do strive to ensure that all of our guests enjoy there time with us. As the property was built some 40 years ago I can assure you the walls are quite robust compared to many newer build standards I have seen, however noise from adjoining rooms is sometimes audible if guests are speaking in louder tones. We certainly apologise for the inconvenience you suffered. We have taken onboard your comments around some of the items off our breakfast buffet and our team are looking at alternate products we can source. We certainly do provide some canned fruit items on our buffet as many of our customers enjoy the pears. peaches, plums etc that accompany the fresh cut pineapple, honey dew and rock melons. The issue with the filter coffee machine was unfortunately unable to be fixed by our staff and did require a technician to attend to this which he did later that day

The lodge is located in a well-kept complex directly opposite the Dunedin Botanical Gardens. You can get to the center / train station / Otago Museum very quickly by car. We made a request in advance for an extra bed for our booked room, communication was super quick and the offer made was top notch.
Our rating refers to the room, the complex and the very friendly and competent staff. We did not eat any meals there. The room was big enough for 3 people, with very pleasant and comfortable beds, a well-equipped bathroom with a shower in the tub and also an area with some dishes and a kettle with tea, coffee and cocoa. The three of us were able to have our small breakfast in the room. The room was cleaned very well. The ladies at the reception were very friendly and happy to help with any questions.

This was a quick 2 night family orientated trip to Dunedin and we couldn’t have picked a better place. Really nice greeting at the front door, convenient access and parking. Everything explained at check in. Pleasant room with access straight onto the garden area. Evening dining not offered due to COVID but the option of ordering from a local restaurant was perfect. Delivered to our room within 20 minutes. And one of the best showers I’ve ever had in a hotel bathroom.

Other than the location - close to the botanical gardens, the university and Hwy 1 - there isn't much to recommend the Leisure Lodge. The reception desk staff were unhelpful, the rooms looked dated and the beds were uncomfortable, there was little soundproofing (we were awakened at 5 am by people talking), and the breakfast was mediocre. It was the only place we stayed in two plus weeks in New Zealand that was truly disappointing.

The Heritage offers such comfort in an attractive garden setting. The rooms are spacious and attractively furnished. Great to be so close to town yet across the road from the Botanic Gardens. A wide variety of culinary delights are within walking distance or you can order from a delightful menu to be delivered to your room.

We have been staying at Distinction Leisure Lodge for around 18 years and the service has never varied. We know hospitality businesses have suffered hugely over the past few years but the Leisure Lodge has remained consistent providing the best possible service and food. Wayne, Charlotte and the team do an amazing job and Ayron served up the most delicious dinner with some very enjoyable banter. Well done all of you!
Another bonus is that it is located opposite Dunedin Botanic Garden with tuis and bellbirds serenading as one enjoys the rhododendrons and magnolias in bloom.

Spacious clean and comfortable rooms. Well laid-out facilities. Easy to find and ample parking.

A special mention to the young lady Anna-Lee, in the bar, nothing was too much trouble for her and such cheerful service as well.

The location is particularly good if traveling for an event at the nearby Forsyth-Barr Stadium.

Although we paid over the odds due to uni returning the normal charge makes it value for money. Nice staff and comfortable rooms. The only drawback is that it needs air conditioning.
It’s a bit dated but comfortable enough.
Nice outdoor area.

I had a nice 5-night stay at the Dunedin Leisure Lodge. The reception and housekeeping staff were terrific and welcoming. The rooms are modern and spacious, and the location is an easy walk to both university and botanical gardens.

Only the dining room was disappointing, with average food and an unpleasant atmosphere. Tired from my travels, I had planned a leisurely solo dinner for my first night. But, half-way through, a raucous tour bus arrived to fill half of the restaurant. They were so noisy that I finished up and left in a hurry. I had prepaid breakfast, which is theoretically available until 9:30. On my second morning I arrived with minutes to spare only to be told by stressed out staff that I could not have breakfast because they had to set up for a morning tea. After a couple more attempts, I decided to forgo the prepaid breakfast and walk to a nearby bagel store where staff were pleasant.

We picked this place simply because of it is close to the university. Our three nights stay were comfortable enough. The building looks slight tired but the beautiful garden compensated for it. Being close to the botanic garden is a plus too. The front desk staff were friendly and efficient. The superior room we stayed in is not big, but clean and has things we needed. The room has no air conditioning. We got a fan on the first day but it was still too hot to sleep. Luckily, Dunedin doesn’t have many sunny days. Tried to book for breakfasts and dinners but our timings were not right. Those services felt like care catering for conference people. Our room was a little bit noisy because it’s close to the road. Overall, it has been an OK place to stay.
