Detailed Reviews
The kingsgate was great for the price ($112.00) however the place is definitely old and in need of a major facelift - The bed was really comfy and the room size was actually really good, the balcony was a nice touch but too small to actually sit out on. the TV had a good range of options and over all the main room felt very clean and well maintained - No central light in the room which is a bit odd, and the ceiling gave it a major dated 80's office converted into hotel vibe.
The small glass shelf in the bathroom was a bit on the dirty side, it was covered in dust and had a hair on it - However I made the front desk aware and they cleaned this while out at dinner. The bathroom in general felt incredibly dated, the shower was pretty splashy and the bath quite small. No ceiling in the bathroom just a noisy fan.
I ended up opting to pay for a car park as the car park for the building was tiny and first come first served which I didn't want to risk, I highly recommend opting to pay for your own car park if one is available (They are limited)
Over all I would stay again for the price but would not recommend paying more than around $120 a night (If you are a millennium club member you get cheaper rates) and I would definitely pay for my own car park.

Location is good and in central city. Rooms are big and clean. Old property however.
Good view. Noises from neighboring rooms were disturbing including phonecards.
Breakfast was very budget and not worth the amount one pays.
Staff extremely helpful and friendly. Very hard working as well. Their kindness made up for all other weak points.

Stayed last weekend and the price for a standard queen was $515 for 2 nights. Generally you would be charged around $268. price gouging at it best. The staff were very helpful, it is not their fault the greedy chain puts all the prices up for orientation weekend. I have stayed here previously and had a fair prices, this one was over the top. Good location but not much parking.

We love the Kingsgate, which is why we return as often as we can. This latest stay was no exception, as the room rate, including breakfast, was extremely reasonable and too tempting to ignore.
The room was its usual spotlessly clean, all staff warm and friendly throughout, the breakfast was faultless & plentiful and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
Yes, the carpark is tight but careful and unhurried driving ensures it's manageable.
We'll be back.

The stay was distinctly underwhelming. Location was good and bed was comfortable enough. That’s it. Service from almost all staff was disinterested bordering on rude. All of the fixtures and fittings and furnishings in the hotel are old, worn and tired. Wifi is pretty useless. Requested towels to be changed on our second day because our baby got banana on one and it was simply folded and put back. Room and most of the hotel has an old dampish kind of smell (not strong but not pleasant). This is not terrible for the price but for a tiny bit more you can get a lot better. I will not stay here again!

Stayed here for one night on a business trip. Staff were friendly and check in was easy.
Free parking is available on a first come first serve basis. Reserved parking is 10 dollars a night.
Room was big with 2 double beds and a small balcony. Good heating through the night and comfortable beds.
Hotel is about 3 minutes walk to the Octagon which has several restaurants and takeaway options.
There is a restaurant on site, but the options were a but limited.
Breakfast was good. Had the Buffet for 15 dollars included sausages eggs bacon etc.
Will stay here again as its moneys worth

It’s not my first stay at this hotel. We selected this hotel due to free parking and the central location. We prepaid breakfast at the rate of 25AUD pp. What was provided - it wasn’t worth the price. Apparently, a cooked buffet is provided during the week and continental over the weekend - at the same charge. Plain Croissants, although tasteful, were the only hot option at the so called “buffet”. The bar was closed at 8.15 pm. The room was renovated, but windows and balcony remember the previous century and scream desperately for an intervention. No fan or air conditioning. At the checkout they were trying to overcharge me - when I asked for the itemisation of my bill, I couldn’t get a straight answer. After sorting out the bill, we left, possibly for good. Unsure whether we will be back, as the hotel clearly is cost cutting.

Checked in Friday afternoon and was not told till the key was being handed over that there was no room service. If I wanted clean towels or anything I was to go down to reception. I was not given a discount or any form of recompense and to wait ill I was given my key before advising I felt was deceptive.
Spent Fri/Sat night at the hotel and sure enough no room service at all.
No where to get a clean cup or another tiny 3 milk sachets or even have my tea/coffee replenished.
A disappointing weekend in all.

We both were very disappointed in the customer service. When we checked in the lady was very rude and was not plesent to talk to and on check out the man working did not say good morning, goodbye or thank us for staying just grunted behind the counter asking for our room number. We traveled all around the south island as we were on honeymoon and stayed in many hotels and never had this experience,in fact all of the other hotels gave somethings small as a gesture to our honeymoon but Kingsgate didn't want to know.We also had the same experience in kingsgate in Te Anau.We will not recommend both hotels to anyone we know going there from Ireland. Rooms were clean and big but but wouldn't hold your breath on getting a nice welcome from staff.
