Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Good location, comfy beds, great range of Sky TV channels. Interior and exterior is a bit dated and I'm sure it was great in the 70's / 80's. Returned to our room having been away for 12 hours to find one bed was not made and the door leading out to the balcony left wide open, advised the front desk staff but not sure if they were too fazed by the concern. Had continental breakfast on the Sunday morning and it was good. Normally travel to Dunedin 4 times a year, undecided if I will stay again.

We needed somewhere to stay for one night before flying out next morning so picked Kingsgate for its location to restaurants and bars in the central city. Check in was quick and easy with the staff being very friendly. Room was clean and tidy upon arrival and the bedroom was separate to lounge area and bathroom. Lounge and bedroom has sliding doors out to a small balcony. Room 506 was top floor with northern views out across city to Mount Cargill. Very quiet rooms. Breakfast next morning in the restaurant was filling. All in all a great experience. There is very limited parking on site. First in - best dressed.

Expect to be disappointed when staying here. Seems like this place was a nice location back in the 70s. Room isnt serviced. However unfirtunately its now outdated and dirty. Lots of black mould in bathroom, shower doesnt work properly. I emailed the manager to let them know ow and they care so little about service they couldn't bother responding. Internet doesnt work properly. It's a good location which is nice. The free breakfast was nice. However the rest was poor.

Customer service from front desk and breakfast was average. The room was dissapointing. Old,worn and not well maintained. However, very clean. Great job housekeeping. The room did not supply a toilet brush. And most dissapointing there was no hot chocolate in the room or at breakfast. The view from the room balcony over town was okay. Very close proximity to the centre of town. Parking avaliable but difficult for large vehicles.

Great location but that's where it ends. Both restaurants were closed except for breakfast. Booked a junior suite with a balcony expecting something above average but it wasn't. No furniture on the balcony and the hotel is dated and requires a major refurbishment.

The hotel is in a great location, just above the Octogen, however it is dated. We felt we were back in the 70's. But the bed was comfortable and the room sunny. I also think the hotel needs to move away from all the plastic! mini milks, jams, butter etc at breakfast, shampoo and conditioners as well as the soaps wrapped in plastic!

This is my fourth stay at the Kingsgate Dunedin and it was great as always. The hotel is centrally located, just a 2 minute walk from the Octagon and an easy walk to everywhere else I needed to go. The rooms are clean, well equipped and secure and the beds are really comfortable. the staff are friendly and helpful and the continental breakfast (included in the room rate) was basic but perfect for us. They have very limited parking but it is free to park on the street overnight if you miss out, you just have to remember that street parking is metered from 9am. Thank you Kingsgate staff, we will stay again.

Hotel is excellent for its location in the CBD as I was attending a conference at the Dunedin Centre across the road. Also great for shopping and proximity to restaurants and cafes. The one bedroom was spacious and well-appointed however some of the furnishings were dated and past their best. Blackout curtains would be nice. The bed was very comfortable and cosy, ensuring a good night's sleep and there was good heating and bathroom amenities. Such a shame there is no longer an evening restaurant on site though...

This was booked as an alternative to the motel options available in Dunedin (having experienced a wide range of these in previous stays). We booked two rooms - one was modernised with new looking balcony with new doors and balustrades, and a new ceiling with nice lights; the other was retro with no ceiling lights, stipple ceiling, with old sliding doors and balustrades (it's apparent they are upgrading this over time). Both rooms were great for our family - beds very comfortable, bathrooms great, and overall a very clean and tidy look. Continental breakfast was included in our bookings - we didn't think much of what we saw of the cooked breakfast offering, and what we had available was more than sufficient with ample cereal options, yoghurts, bagels, croissants, juices and coffee (so don't recommend the upgrade to a cooked breakfast). Staff were very friendly and helpful - one of whom went out of their way to retrieve a library book we left behind in one of the rooms. Excellent value for money - way better than any other place we've stayed in Dunedin. We will definitely look to stay here again next time.

The rooms were clean and nice, was warm when I walked in which was nice in August. The reception staff were lovely. The restaurant for Breakfast was really nice. Didn't know until I got there that the restaurant had no chef for dinner so not open, that was disappointing as that was one reason I booked there so I didn't need to go out. Parking was OK for small cars. However the walls in the rooms are so thin that I could hear everything next door from there conversations to there toilet habits.
