Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

3rd visit to Majestic Masons. A 3 star appartment that rates 4.5. We had the sea view appartment, top floor. Note there is no lift. Great views from the sitting room. Kitchen though only has a portable 2 ring hot plate and a microwave. So cooking has to be well planned. Bathroom is a wet room but all works well. Down side all the windows are casement windows inline with the 1920 construction and can let a bit of a breeze in. Good welcome, laundry on site and garage parking. Great location and good value

We enjoyed our stay here. The apartment was spacious, clean, and quiet. We had a view of the ocean from our windows. We were able to walk to good restaurants and down to the water to watch the surfers. Parking in the garages and on the street were easy.

Nice apartment in a great location however our stay was marred by the total lack of insulation between us and the apartment above. The residents above sounded like a herd of elephants, keeping us awake until late both nights of our stay. We would not recommend this apartment for those wanting a good night's sleep.

I love this place. The facilities are lovely - up-to-date and modern design while still respecting the Art Deco architecture. You can hear and see the sea from the apartment and there is everything you need for a comfortable stay. The bus to the city stops outside the door, with easy parking on site. Close to great cafes and restaurants. Lovely walks along the beach. I always stay here when I am in Dunedin - fourth time!

Very nice place with great amenities and in a fantastic location. Good for families too. We only stayed one night but could have stayed a week. Felt like a home more than a hotel. Good restaurants a stones throw away and the beds were very comfortable.

Well located, around the corner from restaurants and St Clair beach. Old world style with tall ceilings. Rooms have been modernised and well appointed. Views of the beach from upper 2 floors but no lift. Ground floor had access to a courtyard. By error the VAT was taken from our account twice. When management was made aware of this they refunded the money without argument. We enjoyed our stay and would be happy to stay there again next time we are visiting our relatives in Dunedin.

i have mixed feelings about our stay. POSITIVES ARE -beautiful heritage building , nicely decorated, and well kept. -a wonderful location, close to great restaurants and beach -wonderful sea views in some apartments. we had third floor with sea views, and it was lovely to fall asleep with sound of waves and watch surfers while you ate your meals. -Apartment very clean and serviced every second day with clean towels etc. -kitchen well appointed with large fridge and plenty of plates etc.. -thick walls between apartments, so didn't hear neighbors crying children. -garages available for parking, -bed comfortable with electric blanket and plenty of duvets and blankets so very warm. -an outdoor porch with tables was a nice place to sit on sunny days. NEGATIVES ARE COLD- sea-view apartments faced south so despite sunny weather apartment was cold, touching the concrete walls were very clammy . the gas heating in lounge warmed the room up, but gas smell was off putting and worried it was dangerous. the heater in bedroom was too small for space and didn't warm the room up at all. UNCOMFORTABLE FURNITURE - it looked trendy, but dining chairs hard, and arm chairs had no arms and I couldn't get comfortable sitting in them to read. DIM LIGHTING.- we found all the lighting quiet dim and our middle aged eyes couldn't read at night with it. they provided one desk lamp, but the bedside lamps and lounge lamps were ambient and not bright enough for us to read with. OLD TV- As we couldn't easily read at night due to low light, we were disappointed that there wasn't anything worthwhile to watch on TV either as it wasn't a smart TV, so never found anything on except sports and Jones channel with very old reruns. At the price we paid to stay I think they need to upgrade to smart TV. BATHROOM- small basin with no bench on side so felt a cramped experience to wash face , shave , brush teeth. had a disabled shower/ wet room, which seemed ridiculous as anyone with limited mobility couldn't ever reach our apartment, via 4 flights of stairs. Even with shower curtain which annoyingly clung to your legs as you showered, the floor still got very wet. So after being all warm from shower, you got cold again as you were on your hands and knees squeegeeing up all the water everywhere. a pain. KITCHEN- A small layout and only basic hot plates provided, so really just useful for heating up some soup or cooking porridge. A small thing but no towel rails to hang tea towel or dish cloth on. Water from hot water taps in kitchen and bathroom was dangerously hot and scalding STAIRS- outer stairs, plus 3 flights of internal stairs , was tough on our elderly bodies to bring up our luggage on our own. NO RECEPTIONIST- we stayed a week and never saw or met any office staff , hence no support for luggage carrying. LITTLE WARDROBE SPACE. only a narrow cupboard with 5 hangers, so husbands clothes stayed in suitcase

We had the pleasure recently of staying at the Majestic Mansions for about 6 weeks. The apartment was superb, well appointed, spotless, the staff were friendly, and we loved every minute of our stay. I would highly recommend both the apartments and the Esplanade area. Just a magic part of Dunedin!

We spent 4 nights here and absolutely love everything about this place. Lovingly restored and decorated. The apartment we had was warm , clean , well furnished . Location wise , you can’t beat this . Close to the beach, cafes and restaurants and an short easy drive to the city, Otago peninsula, or north to Oamaru / Timaru and Moeraki Boulders. We met Loryn and Penny and they are absolutely lovely ladies - warm, helpful and funny. If you are in Dunedin, this is the place to stay.

We were recommended these apartments and were very happy. We were on the ground floor so did not get a view but the apartment was nicely appointed - a large bedroom with a comfortable bed, small kitchen if you wanted to eat in, nice bathroom and smallish lounge. All you could wish for. Was very handy to several nice restaurants, so we ate out for lunches and dinners. Definitely would stay here again and recommend. There were also covered garages available
