The staff at any accommodation make a big difference to your experience and at Camp Estate, Larnach Castle in Dunedin, Margot and Peter are the icing on the cake! Camp Estate is the luxury arm of Larnach Catle – about 400m away – but Camp Estate is in an ideal hit-top location looking over Dunedin and Otago Harbour. The building is sympathetic to the surroundings but is luxurious in its offering. It has everything you would expect from luxury accommodation whilst not being too big so you can get to know the other guests over evening drinks and canapes. Breakfast is plentiful and the team serve it cooked to order. A visit and evening meal over at the Castle is a must so plan that into your trip and Peter takes care of the transport so you can enjoy the short trip! Also factor in time in the hot tub after dark looking down onto the twinkling lights of Dunedin. The drive down to Portobello is well worth it too and you will need to factor in time for many stops along the way to take photos! Dunedin is a wonderful city and we did not do everything we wanted to so we will be back to visit again! The team can also sort out day trips and seeing Penguins is a great outing. In all, a great team running a great hotel with a special call-out (and thanks) to Margot for looking after us so well.

We stayed 2 nights at the Camp Estate. Quite a high class B&B, with ample public spaces, classy but lacking that “cozy” feel.

We were welcomed by Peter, who was helpful and friendly. He showed us to a very comfortable room. It was spacious, relaxing and had a great view over Dunedin. It had all the amenities that we needed.

The easy access to the Castle was appreciated and we enjoyed the tour and a snack at the cafe. However, we skipped dinner. We went to the pub in Portobello and, on the 2nd night, the restaurant there (separate review).

Breakfast was cooked by Margot; it was the best breakfast of our entire trip around the south island. Margot made us feel very welcome in her kitchen/dining room, and while she was very busy cooking up a storm, she still made time to talk to all the guests. A happy start of the day!

We would stay at the Camp Estate again and recommend it our friends.

While trying to find accommodations on the Larnach Castle grounds, we stumbled on the Camp Estate listing and immediately fell in love! It is the newer accommodation on the property and provides (5) ensuite rooms with amazing B&B breakfast included as well as free access to the Castle and gardens. The friendly staff is always ready to assist and makes you feel like you are living in your own secluded summer estate. Located minutes away from Duneden, the location overlooks the city and harbor area with beautiful views from the grounds and on the approaching drive. Highly recommended!

A warm welcome from Peter who showed us to our gorgeous and extremely comfortable room equipped with everything you might need. Peter arranged for us to join other guests for a pre-dinner drink and canapes before he and Margot drove us to the Castle where we enjoyed a delicious meal followed by a guided tour before being picked up a driven the short ride back to the lodge by Peter.
We slept really well and started the new day with a sumptuous breakfast of our choosing and cooked by margot, and enjoyed the conversation and company of the other guests.
We spent 2 nights here and were sad to leave but received some great tips on where to stop and what we could see on the next leg of our journey from Margot.
We were very well looked after by our hosts and would like to express our sincere appreciation to them

We arrived at the gates and pressed the button. The gates opened and by the time we drove the short distance up the drive, our host, Margot, was there to greet us with a smile and welcome us. We unloaded the car into the gorgeous Neo Classical styles hallway and were invited to take coffee in the lounge whilst Margot brought us up to speed on the house, the castle and a bit about Dunedin. She booked us into Lanarch Castle for dinner and then showed us up to our room. Our luggage had magically moved upstairs to our amazing room. (Thank you Peter)
Margot explained that pre-dinner drink and canapés would be served in the sitting room before she chauffeured us to the castle for dinner and collected us after. The dinner was excellent.
Breakfast was made to order and was very good.
The Camp estate team looked after us very well; nothing is too much trouble and we can’t thank them enough.

We rang in April to secure a room at Camp Estate, and spoke to reception staff at the time. In that conversation, we made it very clear that we were interested in booking a room at Camp Estate (which is a beautiful property) and we were led to believe that is the property for which our reservation was made. However, on arriving at the property today (Dec 2021), we were stunned to find that we had actually been booked into Lanarch Lodge.

Lanarch Lodge is VERY different to Camp Estate, and we were never told that we were being booked in the lodge instead of Camp Estate. Presumably, staff would be aware that the properties are by no means synonymous. Lanarch Lodge is much older, there are no staff to help with your luggage, there's only one staff member at the desk (which is closed on Mondays), there is no room-service/all day on site dining, and it doesn't have the same beautiful facilities or amenities as Camp Estate. It's a completely different style of place.

Safe to say we were shocked when we arrived, as this was not the property we had booked. Unfortunately, they didn't have rooms at Camp Estate for our full 3 night stay. We were told we had to forfeit our deposit, and we were then left booking alternative accommodation at the last minute.

Clearly, there is a huge communication issue here. If guests ring asking to book a room at Camp Estate, there is an obligation to communicate clearly to them if you're actually booking them into a completely different property. This was incredibly disappointing, and frankly quite deceptive.

If you're hoping to book at Camp Estate be VERY careful, because they might book you into Lanarch Lodge without telling you, and then will keep the deposit you've paid.

We were recently in Dunedin when NZ went from a Level 3 to Level 4 shut down. Within the next 24 hours all nonessential businesses were to shutter. This shut down included Camp Estate. Our flights were not until over 48 hours later. When this annoucement came out, we were immediately asked ot leave the museum we were touring and our 3:00 Albatross Tour was cancelled. We returned to Camp Estate to be greeted by Peter and Margot who assured us that we had a place to stay. Peter had told his superiors that he refused to "put us out on the street." In addition, they also offered to provide all meals we would need. Knowing we had a welcoming and comfortable place to stay, we were able to focus on contacting airlines and confirming that our flights were still in operation. Margot allowed us to do laundry and encouraged us to treat Camp Estate as our temporary home. With all indoor activities closed and tours of any type cancelled, Margot, a native of Dunedin, was a fountain of knowledge about activities we could engage in indepenedently until the day of our flights arrived. What could have been a miserable two days, became a time to get to know Dunedin like a local. She had suggestions for activities from gardens to cultural edifaces to wildlife encounters. We were treated and trusted like family and now have new NZ friends.

The Camp Estate is part of the Lanarch Castle estate - quite remote, just outside of Dunedin up quite a steep hill. This is a gated accommodation with ample parking. The accommodation is spacious and clean. Our room was on the first floor - there is a lift to take the luggage up to the upper floor. Our room was quite spacious, well equipped, maintained and clean. Within the room was a fridge, iron and ironing board. Laundry cost $15 a bag. No restaurant, canapes offered but required to pay for your drink if you want one. Dinner can be booked at Larnach Castle just along the road - 4 courses with a glass of wine for $95 per person. After the meal we had a very entertaining tour of the castle. They offer the same menu each evening. Breakfast was OK. Staff very friendly and helpful.

It was the staff who enhanced this five star experience. We were greeted and welcomed as we drove up to Camp Estate. Assistance was offered to bring in our luggage. The room was spacious, had a lovely ambiance and was immaculate. Our windows overlooked the coast. We had booked for the "trust the chef" 4 course dinner. Complimentary drinks and canapes were served in the lounge after which we were transported to the Castle dining room for our meal. The service was excellent and the 4 courses absolutely delicious. We were transported back to Camp Estate.
A buffet breakfast (also with menu options) was served in the morning in the "kitchen".
We had access to both the Castle and the gardens which we spent a good deal of time exploring.
Throughout our stay we felt pampered and well looked after. A great way to celebrate a significant event!

We received a warm welcome from Laura when we arrived and a little later she served some delicious appetizers to us and the other six guests prior to our short drive to the Castle for dinner. Our accommodation was very luxurious with beautiful views and we enjoyed a delicious breakfast before we departed in the morning. This was a truly excellent experience and we would recommend a stay here without hesitation.

Hi Sheila Thank you for your email. Dress for dinner is semi formal (I think this is a New Zealand saying) As most of our guests a travellers, we don't expect them to pack dinner jackets, a dress shirt for men and a nice dress for ladies will be fine. We look forward to your visit. Kind regards Deborah Price Marketing Manager
