Detailed Reviews
Our family of 2 adults and one 10 year old were fortunate enough to stay for 2 nights at Hereweka Garden Retreat. The gracious hosts Anna and Peter have created a natural and peaceful peninsula paradise. Designed to maximize your connection with the magnificent garden, native bush and birds, the accommodation is stylishly contemporary, warm and comfortable. Being able to open up the big glass sliders and shower with the birdsong was a highlight. Views of Hoopers Inlet and Mt Charles are magnificent. The house is well equipped and we also enjoyed a delicious meal from the in house chef Dany along with the tasty breakfast goodies.
We enjoyed many walks through the bush and the garden. Everywhere you turn there is another amazing fern or beautiful flowering plant. The walk over the hill to Portobello provided great views across both sides of the peninsula. Harbour Cone was the most spectacular walk with 360 degree views, well worth the climb. We ended the day quietly content after an evening walk on Allen's Beach.
From sitting silently on the driveway in the dark listening to the most birdsong I've ever heard to being unable to even read a book on the deck because I couldn't stop looking at birds, the garden and the views, this place is remarkably special. Even our 10 year old wanted to live here.
Thanks so much Anna and Peter for sharing it. We left feeling calmer, connected and grateful and we hope to return.

The Hereweka Garden Retreat is exquisite. The gardens are so incredibly beautiful, a magical scenery of flowers and trees nestled into the rolling hills of the Otago Peninsula overlooking the beach. My 5 yo son and I wandered around in the afternoon, each twist and turn in the path was a delight with a new view of colourful flowers nodding in the breeze, perfectly framed by trees and lawn, and then we lay on the grass looking up at the trees and birds and clouds having such a relaxing time. My son couldn’t resist picking a few flowers for a posy and they smelt heavenly.
We all loved Anna’s bread! She made a fresh loaf for breakfast, and it was wonderful to have some beautifully baked bread, even better than mine, served with fresh butter and a selection of condiments provided.
The retreat cottage is simply beautiful, with views of the gardens, the ocean, the headland, and the surrounding native bush from every window. I really appreciated Anna’s ‘tread lightly on the earth’ philosophy too, with composting and recycling available, no single use plastic little shampoo bottles, organic food, freshly laid eggs and baked bread. This place is a gift from the heart.
We saw some great wildlife around Otago peninsula too - penguins, albatrosses, and even had a sea lion chase us down the path to Allan’s beach (a 3 min drive from here weak) before we even realised what was happening. It was our first seal ever and it snuck up behind us.
A wonderful restorative and memorable experience.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review. It’s a delight to hear you enjoyed not only our Retreat but also the gardens and views. You might not know that as part of our commitment to sustainability we also have a Swedish designed composting toilet ,solar hot water and that when we built the Retreat we paid particular attention to researching and using sustainable materials.

We actually spent 6 weeks here as we ended up in lockdown. We were originally meant to be staying 3 nights but we arrived just before lockdown was announced & Anna & Peter very kindly offered that we could stay there.
It is a truly amazing place & we have the most lovely memories that we will treasure for ever.
It’s a gorgeous little “chalet” in the middle of nowhere just perfect for relaxing, walking, enjoying the local wildlife & sightseeing. The many local beaches are picture perfect.
Of course out of lockdown it’s a perfect base for exploring lots of local towns & experiencing all that the area has to offer. The extensive balconies were perfect for my lockdown yoga & pilates. Stunning views over the surrounding hills & inlet.
Anna & Peter are lovely hosts & looked after us so well. Anna is a great cook & her breakfast items are delicious.
They have an extensive organic fruit & vegetable garden which is lovely to visit & the main garden is a true delight. There are kilometres of bush trails to explore & a lovely garden full of amazing trees, shrubs & flowers. Just beautiful!
We were sad to leave & will definitely return. It’s a very special place. Thank you Anna & Peter.

Anne and Peter kindly let us use the gardens for our wedding ceremony and what an amazing spot it was. The garden is beautifully maintained, birds were singing and sun was shining. We stayed in the cottage overnight too and loved waking up with the quiet, nice breakfast and amazing views. thanks for the memories!

Nice spot to get away from it all and only 30mins back into Dunedin. Hosts are very nice, made sure we had everything we wanted and let us know about the area. Went for a walk up through the property to the top of the hill, lovely gardens and regenerated native forest. The unit has everything you need, fully equipped kitchen and pantry stocked with breakfast including fresh eggs and preserves. Comfy bed, great indoor/outdoor shower. Definitely recommend this place for a visit. Well worth it.

We had a short one night stay there courtesy of a gift and what a wonderful gift. We loved being within 45 minutes of home yet feeling like we were a million miles away in this serene location with the birds singing. We were able to watch a tui do circuits all evening long! Anna was very welcoming and we had a lovely meal and encounter with Dany. The breakfast food was delicious. We were able to go for a bike ride and a short walk. With better weather, we would have done a lot more walking as there were many choices. The accommodation was comfortable and warm and we were able to just sit, relax and read a book (not a common feat for us!). This is easily a place we would be happy to return to.

We stayed recently and enjoyed our stay immensely. The chalet Is comfortable with open fire and beautiful views. The kitchen has everything you will need including organic milk and yoghurt home made jams and bread and organic muesli as well as freshly laid eggs. The bird song in the morning is unbelievable. You can walk around the owners garden which is beautiful. The owners are lovely people. It is a place to relax and enjoy the peace.

Just an amazing retreat with only the sound of the Tui, Korimako, Piwawaka and Kereru to keep you company. It was a bit cool to sit outside on the balcony when we spent 3 days here so will have to return in the warmer months as it's an amazing view. Definitely need to spend at least 3-4 days, just to get the most out of the cottage, surrounding gardens with gorgeous bush walks plus of course to walk, visit and view all that the Otago Peninsula has to offer. The cottage has everything you need to cook a meal or Portobello, with a choice of 3 eateries, is only a 5 minute drive. Breakfast is provided and was ample and delicious with all the contents (except for the butter and milk) being homemade and organic (muesli, bread, jams, yoghurt, fresh eggs, fruit). The fire was such a delight and kept the whole cottage so warm plus added to the ambience, fitting in nicely with the recycled timber flooring and gorgeous decor. The shower was just something to behold with a sliding door to the outside, we weren't quite brave enough to try this out so will again have to wait for our return. This is truly one of those very special places to stay so treat yourselves, you won't regret it💚

My husband and I stayed a little less than a week at Herewaka, and even while we were there, we wished we had opted for a longer stay. The garden is beautiful, the accommodation is beautiful. We were surrounded by the song of Tui and Bell birds. One night Anna let us know that we could go down to the inlet to see the Southern Lights! We also enjoyed going to the Royal Albatross Center and to see blue penguins and visiting the gorgeous beaches. This was, for us, a treasured trip that met and surpassed every expectation. Anna and Peter are gracious, informative hosts who had engaged in a powerful project of restoration on their property. I cannot recommend Hereweka Garden Retreat highly enough.

Yes we allow children. However there is only one bedroom which is upstairs. We can either put an extra bed upstairs or one in the living area. Have a look on the website at the photos which will show you the lay out of our place
